A-Level
Nuclear physics is one of the most modern topics on the A-Level physics syllabus and a regular feature of Edexcel Paper 2. This guide follows the Edexcel specification order, working through nuclear structure, binding energy, radioactive decay, half-life, fission and fusion. Each section pairs a Chinese explanation with the standard English wording you need in exam answers, so you can understand the physics and express it correctly under exam conditions.
Composition of the Nucleus: Protons, Neutrons and Nucleons
The nucleus contains protons and neutrons, which together are called nucleons. Protons carry positive charge while neutrons are electrically neutral, and the two have almost the same mass: about 1.673 x 10⁻²⁷ kg, with the neutron slightly heavier. The proton number Z identifies the element and fixes the nuclear charge, while the nucleon number A is the total count of protons and neutrons. Edexcel often tests two details: the charge on a nucleus equals Z multiplied by the elementary charge e, and the size scale, because a nucleus is about 10⁻¹⁵ m across while the atom as a whole is about 10⁻¹⁰ m, one hundred thousand times larger, which means atoms are almost entirely empty space.
Nuclide Notation and Isotopes
The nuclide notation is written as ᴬZX, with the proton number Z at the bottom left, the nucleon number A at the top left, and the element symbol X in the middle. Isotopes are nuclei that have the same proton number but different nucleon numbers, so they show identical chemical behaviour yet have different masses. Carbon-12 and carbon-14 are both isotopes of carbon; carbon-14 has six protons and eight neutrons and is used in radiocarbon dating. In Edexcel definition questions you must state both halves of the definition: the same number of protons, and a different number of neutrons. Answering with only one half loses the mark.
The Strong Nuclear Force and the Line of Stability
Protons inside a nucleus repel one another electrostatically, and if that were the only force the nucleus would fly apart instantly; gravity is far too weak to hold it together. The strong nuclear force is the short-range force that binds nucleons. It acts over only about 3 femtometres, is strongly attractive at typical nucleon separations, and essentially vanishes beyond that range. Stable nuclei lie along the line of stability on an N-Z graph: light stable nuclei have roughly equal numbers of protons and neutrons, while heavy stable nuclei contain noticeably more neutrons, because the extra neutrons add attractive force without adding electrostatic repulsion.
Mass Defect and Binding Energy Calculations
If you weigh the individual nucleons of a nucleus separately, their total mass is always slightly greater than the mass of the nucleus itself, and this difference is the mass defect. When nucleons join to form a nucleus, the missing mass is converted into the energy released in the process, which is the binding energy, given by E = Δmc². For helium-4, two protons plus two neutrons have a combined mass of about 4.032 u, while the helium nucleus is about 4.003 u, giving a mass defect of roughly 0.0293 u. Multiplying by the conversion factor 931.5 MeV per u gives a binding energy of about 27.3 MeV. In Edexcel questions the masses are usually quoted in atomic mass units, so memorise the conversion 1 u = 931.5 MeV/c² and state your final answer in MeV.
The Binding Energy Curve: Why Iron is Most Stable
Plotting the binding energy per nucleon against the nucleon number produces the binding energy curve. It rises steeply for the lightest nuclei, reaches a maximum of about 8.8 MeV per nucleon around iron-56, and then falls slowly for heavier nuclei. Iron sits at the peak because its nucleons are bound most tightly, which is why iron-56 is the most stable nucleus. For this reason, when a heavy nucleus splits into medium-mass fragments by fission, or when light nuclei join into a heavier one by fusion, the products lie closer to the top of the curve, and both processes release energy. Edexcel frequently asks you to read the most stable nuclide from the graph and to explain the energy release of fission and fusion in terms of movement toward the peak.
Writing Alpha and Beta Decay Equations
In alpha decay the nucleus emits a helium nucleus containing two protons and two neutrons, so the nucleon number falls by 4 and the proton number falls by 2; uranium-238 decays to thorium-234 with the emission of an alpha particle. In beta-minus decay a neutron is converted into a proton, with the simultaneous emission of an electron and an antineutrino, so the proton number rises by 1 while the nucleon number stays the same; carbon-14 decays to nitrogen-14 in this way. When writing decay equations you must check that nucleon number and proton number balance on both sides. Edexcel marks are lost when the antineutrino is omitted or when the values of A and Z do not balance.
Gamma Radiation and Nuclear De-excitation
Gamma radiation is a high-energy electromagnetic wave emitted when an excited nucleus falls back to a lower energy state. It carries no charge and no mass, so a gamma transition changes neither the nucleon number nor the proton number. After an alpha or beta decay the daughter nucleus is often left in an excited state and immediately releases a gamma photon, which is why gamma emission usually accompanies the other decay modes. Of the three types of radiation, gamma rays are the most penetrating and require thick lead or concrete to stop them, while alpha particles are stopped by a sheet of paper. Edexcel regularly tests the ordering: ionising power alpha is greater than beta, which is greater than gamma, while penetrating power is exactly the reverse.
Half-life: Definition and Calculation
The half-life is the time taken for the number of radioactive nuclei in a sample to fall to half of its original value. It is a constant for a given isotope and does not change with temperature, pressure or chemical state. The number remaining obeys N = N0(1/2)ⁿ, where n = t/T½ is the number of half-lives that have elapsed. Iodine-131 has a half-life of about 8 days, so after 24 days, which is three half-lives, only one eighth of the original nuclei remain. Edexcel often supplies a decay curve instead of raw data, and you should read the half-life from the graph by finding the time at which the activity falls to half of any chosen starting value; the procedure is identical whether you use activity A or the number of nuclei N.
The Exponential Decay Law and Decay Curves
Radioactive decay follows an exponential law: N = N0 e^(−λt), where λ is the decay constant, related to the half-life by λ = ln 2 divided by T½, approximately 0.693 over the half-life. The activity A = λN is measured in becquerels, where 1 Bq means one decay per second. An exponential decay curve falls smoothly from its initial value but never quite reaches zero, because after any finite time a tiny fraction of the nuclei always remains. Edexcel sometimes asks you to find λ from the half-life, so remember that ln 2 is about 0.693, and when the initial number of nuclei is very large, use standard form to avoid arithmetic errors and unit mistakes.
十、质能方程E=mc²的应用 | Applying the Mass-Energy Equation E = mc²
All the energy released in a nuclear reaction comes from the mass defect, and the calculation runs in two steps: find Δm first, then convert it with E = Δmc². Two conversion factors are worth memorising: 1 u corresponds to 931.5 MeV, and 1 MeV equals 1.6 x 10⁻¹³ J. A single fission of uranium-235 releases about 200 MeV, which sounds small on its own, but one mole of uranium, about 235 g, contains roughly 6 x 10²³ atoms, giving a total energy of about 1.9 x 10¹³ J, equivalent to the combustion of several tonnes of coal. The biggest source of lost marks in Edexcel calculations is units: masses in kilograms give energies in joules, while masses in atomic mass units give energies in MeV. Mixing the two systems almost guarantees an error.
Nuclear Fission and Chain Reactions
Fission is the splitting of a heavy nucleus after it absorbs a neutron, producing two medium-mass nuclei and releasing two or three new neutrons. Uranium-235, for example, absorbs one neutron and splits into barium-141 and krypton-92 while releasing three neutrons. Those neutrons can trigger further fissions, sustaining a chain reaction. In a nuclear reactor, control rods made of boron or cadmium absorb surplus neutrons to regulate the reaction rate, while a moderator such as graphite or heavy water slows the fast neutrons down to thermal speeds, because uranium-235 absorbs slow neutrons far more readily than fast ones. Edexcel short-answer questions repeatedly ask how a chain reaction is sustained and what the control rods and the moderator do, so learn the standard wording for both.
Nuclear Fusion and Stellar Energy
Fusion is the joining of two light nuclei into a heavier one, with a release of energy; deuterium and tritium fuse to form helium-4 plus one neutron, releasing about 17.6 MeV. Fusion requires extremely high temperature and pressure so that the nuclei can overcome their mutual electrostatic repulsion and come close enough to fuse, and this is exactly the process that powers the Sun and other stars. Controlled fusion on Earth is extremely difficult because no solid container can withstand temperatures of hundreds of millions of degrees; current research relies on magnetic confinement in devices such as tokamaks. Edexcel commonly asks about the conditions needed for fusion, why fusion is regarded as a clean energy source, and how fusion compares with fission in terms of fuel, waste and difficulty.
