AS AQA Physics Unit 1 (PHYA1) covers three main areas: particles and radiation, electromagnetic radiation and quantum phenomena, and current electricity. After every exam series, AQA publishes an official Report on the Examination, which analyses question by question how candidates performed, what errors they commonly made, and what examiners expected. This report is effectively a ready-made list of the mistakes that actually cost marks. Based on the conclusions that recent Unit 1 reports emphasise again and again, this article summarises ten high-frequency mark-loss areas to help you target your revision precisely.
Units and Significant Figures
The most frequent criticism in examiner reports is that candidates omit units, write the wrong unit, or give answers with the wrong number of significant figures. Every calculation in Unit 1 requires a unit: charge is measured in coulombs (C), potential difference in volts (V), and resistivity in ohm metres (Ω m). For significant figures, AQA expects the final answer to match the precision of the data given in the question, usually two or three figures. Writing eight significant figures earns no extra credit and reveals a misunderstanding of measurement precision. Standard symbols matter too: current is I, charge is Q and time is t, so using A for current is treated as a conceptual confusion rather than a careless slip.
Particle Classification and Quark Composition
Particle classification is a basic scoring topic in Unit 1, yet examiners find that many candidates cannot distinguish baryons, mesons and leptons. Protons and neutrons are baryons, made of three quarks; pions and kaons are mesons, made of one quark and one antiquark; electrons and muons are leptons, which do not experience the strong interaction. Candidates frequently write the proton as two down quarks and one up quark instead of two up and one down (uud), or forget that the kaon contains a strange quark and therefore carries strangeness. Draw a quark-composition table and memorise the properties of antiquarks, which carry opposite charge, baryon number and strangeness to their partners.
Conservation Laws in Particle Interactions
To judge whether a particle interaction can occur, you must check the conservation laws one by one. Examiner reports note that candidates most often miss the distinction between lepton number conservation and strangeness conservation: strangeness is only conserved in strong interactions, while the weak interaction can change it. Charge, baryon number and lepton number are conserved in all interactions. When answering, write out the full chain "charge is conserved, baryon number is conserved, lepton number is conserved" rather than the single word "conserved", otherwise you will not gain the process marks.
The Photoelectric Effect and Photon Energy
The photoelectric effect is a major mark-loss area in the quantum section. There are three core points: first, the maximum kinetic energy of photoelectrons depends on the frequency of the light, not its intensity, which only affects the size of the photocurrent; second, there is a threshold frequency below which no electrons are emitted however intense the light; third, Einstein's equation hf = φ + Ek(max), where φ is the work function. Examiners repeatedly stress the one-to-one interaction between a photon and an electron: a single photon can eject at most one electron, and this is the fundamental difference between quantum behaviour and the classical wave model.
Energy Levels, Excitation and Spectral Lines
Energy-level questions require you to understand three processes: excitation, ionisation and photon emission. An electron absorbs a photon whose energy exactly equals the gap between two levels and jumps to the higher level; if the absorbed energy exceeds the ionisation energy, the electron leaves the atom. When a photon is emitted, its frequency is given by hf = E1 - E2, so a larger energy gap means a higher frequency. Examiner reports note that candidates often confuse ionisation energy with excitation energy, or draw the arrows in the wrong direction on energy-level diagrams: absorption points up and emission points down. Remember that energy increases up the diagram.
Matter Waves and the de Broglie Wavelength
The quantitative point in wave-particle duality is the de Broglie wavelength λ = h/p = h/mv. Examiner reports show that the most typical candidate error is mixing up units: momentum is measured in kg m/s, so mass must be in kilograms rather than grams and velocity in m/s. Another frequent error is forgetting the conversion between electronvolts and joules, 1 eV = 1.6 × 10^-19 J; if the electron's kinetic energy is given in eV, it must be converted before substitution. The electron diffraction experiment proves that electrons have wave properties and is the direct evidence for the concept of matter waves, often tested as a definition question.
Current, Charge and Charge Carriers
The definition of current, I = ΔQ/Δt, is an easy mark, but examiners find candidates lose marks on the concept of charge carriers. In metals the charge carriers are free electrons, while in semiconductors there are both electrons and holes. The drift velocity calculation I = nAve requires you to understand each symbol: n is the number of charge carriers per unit volume, A is the cross-sectional area, v is the drift velocity and e is the electronic charge. Candidates often confuse n with the total number of charges, or use the wrong area. Remember that drift velocity is very small, on the order of millimetres per second, far slower than the random thermal motion of the electrons.
Resistivity and Properties of Conductors
The resistivity formula ρ = RA/L is a core calculation in Unit 1, but candidates often lose marks on unit conversion and physical meaning. The unit of resistivity is Ω m, which means ohm multiplied by metre, not ohm per metre. Resistivity is a property of the material, independent of the length and cross-sectional area of the conductor, and varies only with temperature. Questions also ask you to identify components from their I-V characteristics: an ohmic conductor is a straight line through the origin, a semiconductor diode conducts in one direction only, and a filament lamp shows a curve because resistance rises with temperature. Examiner reports remind candidates to label axes with the quantity and unit when plotting graphs.
EMF, Internal Resistance and Circuits
Circuits with internal resistance produce the most discriminating questions in Unit 1. The key equation is ε = I(R + r), meaning the emf equals the sum of the p.d. across the external circuit and the "lost volts" across the internal resistance. The terminal p.d. is V = ε - Ir, so it falls as the current increases. To measure internal resistance, change the external resistance R, record the current I, and plot V against I using V = ε - Ir; the gradient is -r and the y-intercept is ε. Examiner reports note that the biggest error is confusing emf with terminal p.d., and thinking the terminal p.d. is zero in an open circuit, when in fact it equals the emf because no current flows.
Common Mark-Loss Areas and Exam Strategy
Combining recent Unit 1 examiner reports, four general exam disciplines emerge. First, write the formula before substituting values and show the symbols clearly, because method marks form a substantial share of the total. Second, units and significant figures apply to the whole paper, so check them on every calculation. Third, read the keywords in multiple-choice questions carefully, such as increases, stays the same and always, since concept questions often trap candidates with limiting words like maximum and must. Fourth, for particle and quantum questions, write out the full conservation chain or the full equation rather than just the conclusion. Before the exam, turn the ten mark-loss areas in this article into a checklist and tick through each one.
