Chemical equilibrium is one of the core topics in the Edexcel A-Level Chemistry course and a high-frequency exam area in Papers 1 and 2. This article explains reversible reactions, dynamic equilibrium, the equilibrium constants Kc and Kp, ICE table calculations, Le Chatelier's principle, and the role of catalysts, helping you build a complete framework and master a systematic method for calculation questions.
Reversible Reactions and the Definition of Dynamic Equilibrium
In chemistry, some reactions go to completion in a single direction, while others are reversible: the forward and reverse reactions can occur at the same time. When the rate of the forward reaction equals the rate of the reverse reaction, the system reaches dynamic equilibrium. At this point the concentrations of reactants and products no longer change with time, but at the microscopic level both reactions continue; the system only appears static on the macro scale. The Edexcel A-Level specification expects you to use the condition "rate of forward reaction equals rate of reverse reaction" to decide whether equilibrium has been established, and to understand that equilibrium is a dynamic process rather than a stopped reaction.
二、平衡常数Kc的表达式与含义 | The Expression and Meaning of the Equilibrium Constant Kc
For a general reaction aA + bB ⇌ cC + dD, the concentration equilibrium constant Kc is written as the product of the product concentrations (each raised to its stoichiometric coefficient) divided by the product of the reactant concentrations (each raised to its stoichiometric coefficient). Kc depends only on temperature and is independent of initial concentrations, pressure, and catalyst. The larger the value of Kc, the further the equilibrium position lies toward the products; the smaller Kc is, the more reactants dominate. Only species in the gas phase or in solution appear in the expression; pure solids and pure liquids are treated as constants and are omitted.
A homogeneous equilibrium is one in which all reactants and products are in the same phase (all gas or all solution), so every species is written into the Kc expression. A heterogeneous equilibrium involves more than one phase; for example, in the decomposition of solid calcium carbonate, CaCO3 and CaO are pure solids while CO2 is a gas, so the Kc expression contains only the concentration of CO2, giving Kc = [CO2]. This is a frequent Edexcel exam point, and candidates often lose marks by mistakenly writing pure solids into the expression.
四、ICE表:解平衡计算的四步流程 | The ICE Table: A Four-Step Workflow for Equilibrium Calculations
The most reliable way to solve equilibrium concentration problems is to use an ICE table with three rows for Initial, Change, and Equilibrium. First write the balanced equation and determine the initial concentrations (or amounts). Second, let x represent the change in one species and express the change in every other species according to the stoichiometric ratio. Third, write the equilibrium concentrations in terms of x. Fourth, substitute these expressions into the Kc expression, solve for x, and back-substitute to find the equilibrium concentrations. This method effectively prevents sign errors and missed coefficients, and it is the standard approach for Edexcel calculation questions.
五、分压与Kp:气相平衡常数 | Partial Pressure and Kp: The Gas-Phase Equilibrium Constant
For gas-phase reactions, the more commonly used constant is the partial pressure equilibrium constant Kp. The Kp expression has the same form as Kc, but each partial pressure replaces the corresponding concentration. According to Dalton's law of partial pressures, the partial pressure of a gas equals its mole fraction multiplied by the total pressure. To calculate Kp, first work out the amounts of each component, calculate the mole fractions, multiply by the total pressure to obtain partial pressures, and finally substitute into the Kp expression. Edexcel frequently gives the total pressure and initial amounts and asks you to work back to the equilibrium partial pressures; for these questions you must first relate the mole fractions to x.
Mole Fractions and Total Pressure Calculations
The mole fraction is the amount of one component divided by the total amount of all components, and the mole fractions always sum to one. In a gas-phase reaction carried out in a closed vessel, if the number of gas molecules changes (delta-n is not zero), the total amount changes as the equilibrium shifts, so the mole fractions also vary with x. To calculate them, first find the total amount of all components at equilibrium, then determine each component's mole fraction. Note in particular that the mole fractions equal the initial composition only when the total amount of gas does not change during the reaction.
Le Chatelier's Principle: How Concentration and Pressure Shift the Position
Le Chatelier's principle states that when a system at equilibrium is subjected to a change in conditions, the equilibrium shifts in the direction that opposes that change. Increasing the concentration of a reactant shifts the equilibrium toward the side that consumes it (the forward direction); increasing the pressure shifts it toward the side with fewer gas molecules; raising the temperature shifts it toward the endothermic direction. A common candidate error is to confuse "the equilibrium shifts" with "Kc changes": changing concentration or pressure only moves the equilibrium position and does not change the value of Kc; only a change in temperature changes Kc or Kp.
Kp | How Temperature Changes Kc and Kp
Temperature is the only factor that changes the numerical value of the equilibrium constant. For an endothermic reaction, raising the temperature increases Kc because the equilibrium shifts in the forward direction; for an exothermic reaction, raising the temperature decreases Kc. The reasoning treats heat as a kind of "component": the endothermic direction needs an "input of heat", so increasing temperature is like adding this component and the equilibrium shifts to consume it. A common Edexcel question gives Kc values at different temperatures and asks you to decide whether the reaction is endothermic or exothermic.
Why Catalysts Do Not Change the Equilibrium Position
A catalyst lowers the activation energy and speeds up both the forward and reverse reactions by the same factor, so it only shortens the time needed to reach equilibrium and cannot change the equilibrium position or the values of Kc and Kp. Industrial processes such as the Haber process for ammonia and the contact process for sulfuric acid use catalysts to reach equilibrium quickly at moderate temperatures, balancing yield against rate. Candidates should be clear that the "rate" a catalyst increases is a kinetic concept, whereas the equilibrium position and equilibrium constant are thermodynamic concepts; the two must not be confused.
十、Kc与Kp的相互换算 | Converting Between Kc and Kp
Kp and Kc can be interconverted using the ideal gas law, giving the relationship Kp = Kc multiplied by (RT) raised to the power of delta-n, where R is the gas constant, T is the Kelvin temperature, and delta-n is the difference between the number of gas molecules of products and reactants. When delta-n equals zero, Kp equals Kc; when there are more gas molecules on the product side, Kp is greater than Kc. The Edexcel specification generally expects you to master the calculation of delta-n and unit conversions; in the exam you must remember to convert temperature to kelvin and to use consistent units for pressure and concentration.
十一、Edexcel常考题型与常见易错点 | Common Edexcel Exam Question Types and Frequent Mistakes
Common Edexcel A-Level equilibrium question types include calculating Kc from equilibrium concentrations, using an ICE table to find the equilibrium composition, finding Kp from total pressure and mole fractions, predicting the direction of shift after a change in conditions, and comparing Kc values at different temperatures to decide the enthalpy sign. There are three high-frequency mistakes: writing pure solids or liquids into the Kc expression, errors in unit conversion (especially treating degrees Celsius as kelvin), and forgetting to raise concentrations to the power of the stoichiometric coefficient. Writing the expression first, then the ICE table, and finally substituting values and checking units can markedly improve accuracy.
