AQA A-Level英语语言考点精讲与高效复习
AQA英语语言A-Level是一门研究「语言如何工作」的学科:它既分析日常对话、新闻评论与广告文本,也探究儿童如何学会说话、英语如何随地区与时代而变迁。与英语文学不同,这门课更像一门语言科学,要求你掌握系统的分析框架与术语,并用证据支撑观点。本文按试卷结构,把考点拆解为十个核心模块,帮助你高效复习。
AQA A-Level English Language is a subject about how language works: it analyses everyday conversation, newspaper comment and advertising, and it explores how children learn to speak and how English varies across region and time. Unlike English Literature, this course is closer to a science of language, requiring you to master systematic frameworks, precise terminology and evidence-based argument. This article breaks the syllabus into ten core modules following the exam structure, to help you revise efficiently.
The AQA A-Level English Language qualification (7702) has three components: Paper 1 "Language, the Individual and Society", Paper 2 "Language Diversity and Change", and a Non-Exam Assessment worth 20% of the total. Paper 1 lasts 2 hours 30 minutes for 100 marks, split into Section A Textual Variations and Representations (70 marks) and Section B Children's Language Development (30 marks). Paper 2 mirrors the same time and marks, with Section A Diversity and Change worth 30 marks and Section B Language Discourses worth 70 marks. The NEA consists of a Language Investigation (2,000 words) and Original Writing with commentary (750 words each). Understanding the weighting of each component is the first step in allocating your revision time wisely.
二、语言分析的六大框架:语音、词汇、语法、语义、语用与语篇 | The Six Linguistic Frameworks
Whatever text you face, examiners expect systematic analysis through six linguistic frameworks: phonetics and phonology deal with sound (alliteration, consonant clusters, intonation), lexis and semantics deal with word choice and meaning (formality, semantic fields, connotation), grammar deals with morphology and syntax (word classes, sentence types, tense), pragmatics deals with implied meaning in context (politeness, implicature), discourse analysis deals with how texts are organised (cohesion, discourse markers), and graphology covers visual features (iconography, layout, punctuation). Remember the key word "framework": do not list terminology in isolation, but explain how each linguistic feature serves the overall purpose and audience of the text.
三、Paper 1 Section A文本变化与再现:如何剖析任意文本 | Textual Variations and Representations
Section A presents two thematically linked texts and asks you to compare how they represent the same topic in different contexts. The key lies in "variation" and "representation": first label each text's mode (spoken or written, formal or informal), audience, purpose and genre, then analyse how the writer shapes a "representation" of the topic through language choices, a description that carries a particular stance. High-scoring answers cite concrete linguistic evidence, such as the inclusive pronoun "we", the certainty conveyed by modal verbs, and the ideology behind a metaphor, tying language to context rather than vaguely saying "this text is more formal".
Section B asks you to write a discursive essay on child language acquisition, usually providing data such as a transcript of a two-year-old's speech. You need to master the key stages: pre-verbal babbling, the holophrastic one-word stage (about 12 to 18 months), the two-word stage (18 to 24 months), the telegraphic stage (24 to 36 months), and the post-telegraphic stage with complex grammar. You must also be able to reference theories: Chomsky's nativism and Language Acquisition Device, Skinner's behaviourism, Piaget's cognitive development stages, and the social-interactionist accounts of Vygotsky and Bruner. Match specific examples in the data to stages and theories, rather than discussing theory in the abstract.
五、Paper 2 Section A语言多样性与变迁:方言、阶层与性别 | Language Diversity and Change
This section tests the diversity of English: regional variation (dialects and accents), social variation (sociolects, class and occupation), gender and ethnicity, and how English changes over time. Questions ask you to evaluate a statement about language, such as "Standard English is better than regional dialects". The key to high marks is taking a descriptivist rather than prescriptivist stance: describe how language is actually used rather than prescribing how it should be. Support your argument with specific research, such as Labov's work on social class and accent, Trudgill's Norwich study, and discussions of the prestige of Received Pronunciation versus "Estuary English".
Section B is the highest-value part of the paper, typically giving you two texts on a language topic (newspaper opinion pieces on dialect, internet slang or accents) and asking you to write a piece of "directed writing" in response while analysing the "language discourses" of the two texts, how they talk about language and what ideology lies beneath. First identify each text's viewpoint, register and rhetorical strategies (emotional appeal, presupposition, hyperbole, metaphor); second, evaluate how these strategies position the reader; third, in your directed writing, express your own stance in a formal, academic register while responding to the source texts.
The Language Investigation requires you to conduct a small-scale study around a linguistic question and write it up in 2,000 words. Your topic should be focused and feasible, such as "Are abbreviations in teenage texting changing written English?" or "How do apology strategies differ across age groups?". You must collect real data (recordings and transcripts, questionnaires, corpus samples), explain your method and ethical considerations, and analyse using the linguistic frameworks. Examiners value your reflection on method: is the sample sufficient, are variables controlled, and are your conclusions appropriately cautious? Avoid topics so broad that your data cannot support the conclusion.
Original Writing asks you to produce a 750-word text in a specific genre (a speech, travel writing, a short story or an interview), then write a 750-word commentary explaining your choices. The commentary is where the marks are: use linguistic terminology to explain "why", why this register, this sentence structure, this metaphor, and how each serves purpose and audience. Start by choosing a genre and studying its conventions, deliberately deploy specific linguistic features while writing, then explain each one in turn in the commentary. Organise the commentary by linguistic framework, following a "one feature, one term, one effect" structure.
AQA English Language has five assessment objectives: AO1 tests your ability to apply appropriate methods of language analysis using terminology; AO2 tests critical understanding of key concepts and issues; AO3 tests how you analyse contextual factors and language features in constructing meaning; AO4 tests comparison and connection across texts; and AO5 tests expertise and creativity in using English for different purposes. In short, Paper 1 Section A centres on AO1 and AO3, Section B on AO2; Paper 2's discursive essay centres on AO2 and AO3, and directed writing on AO5; the NEA commentary centres on AO2 and AO4. Before answering, judge which AO the question targets, as this helps you allocate your time precisely.
十、高效复习计划:时间表、真题与术语记忆法 | An Efficient Revision Plan
Efficient revision can follow three steps. First, spend the first two weeks building a "terminology bank": turn the six frameworks' terms into flashcards and practise a daily "framework scan" on a real text until you can instantly label word classes, register and rhetorical strategies. Second, complete one full past paper under timed conditions each week, especially the high-value Paper 2 Section B, allocating time strictly and self-marking against the mark scheme. Third, attribute errors in your weak areas: is it forgotten terminology, a lack of theoretical support, or loose answer structure? Write the cause down and target it the following week. In the week before the exam, return to your terminology bank and notes to maintain fluency rather than cramming.
