Waves is a core topic that runs throughout the AQA A-Level Physics course, from AS to A2, with a steady share of the exam marks. This article systematically covers transverse and longitudinal waves, the wave equation, polarisation, interference, stationary waves, diffraction, refraction and total internal reflection, along with key calculation points and common mistakes, to help you build a complete understanding of waves.
What Is a Wave: Transverse vs Longitudinal
A wave is a means of transferring energy from one place to another without any net transfer of the medium itself. Waves are classified into two types based on the relationship between vibration and propagation. In a transverse wave, particles vibrate perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer; electromagnetic waves and water surface waves are typical examples. In a longitudinal wave, particles vibrate parallel to the direction of propagation; sound waves and seismic P waves are common examples. Mastering this distinction is the foundation for understanding polarisation, interference and many other wave phenomena.
二、波动方程 v = fλ 的推导与运用 | Deriving and Using the Wave Equation
The fundamental relationship linking wave speed, frequency and wavelength is v = fλ, where v is the wave speed in metres per second, f is the frequency in hertz, and λ is the wavelength in metres. The equation follows from "speed equals distance divided by time": one complete wavelength corresponds to one complete cycle, so the wave travels a distance λ in a time equal to the period T, giving v = λ/T. Since frequency is the reciprocal of period, we arrive at v = fλ. A crucial exam point is that when a wave enters a new medium, its frequency stays constant while its wavelength and speed change, which is the key to explaining refraction.
Phase and Phase Difference
Phase describes the position of a point on a wave within its cycle, measured in radians, with one complete cycle corresponding to 2π radians. Phase difference compares the vibration timing of two points or two waves. When the phase difference is zero or an integer multiple of 2π, the waves are in phase and vibrate in step; when it is π, they are in antiphase and vibrate in opposite directions. Phase difference is closely linked to path difference: when two waves arrive at a point by different paths, every change of one wavelength in the path difference produces a change of 2π in phase difference. This relationship is the foundation for understanding interference fringes.
Polarisation of Waves
Polarisation is a phenomenon unique to transverse waves and provides a crucial experimental test for distinguishing transverse from longitudinal waves. A transverse wave can vibrate in many directions within the plane perpendicular to its direction of travel; restricting vibration to a single direction produces a polarised wave. A polarising filter only transmits vibrations in one specific direction. Light can be polarised but sound cannot, which is the key evidence that light is a transverse wave. A-Level exams frequently test the conclusion that polarisation proves light is transverse, often through combinations of polarisers and analysers.
Superposition and the Conditions for Coherence
When two or more waves meet in the same medium, the principle of superposition states that the resultant displacement at any instant is the vector sum of the displacements that each wave would produce on its own. To produce a stable, visible interference pattern, the two waves must be coherent: they must have the same frequency, the same direction of vibration, and a constant phase difference. Ordinary light sources such as filament lamps do not maintain a constant phase difference, which is why interference is hard to observe with them. Laser light, in contrast, is highly coherent, which is why lasers are commonly used in modern demonstrations of Young's double-slit experiment.
Young's Double-Slit Interference
Young's double-slit experiment is the classic demonstration of the wave nature of light. A beam of monochromatic coherent light passes through two narrow slits, which act as two coherent sources. The light emerging from the slits interferes, producing a pattern of equally spaced bright and dark fringes. Bright fringes occur where the path difference is a whole number of wavelengths, giving constructive interference; dark fringes occur where the path difference is an odd number of half wavelengths, giving destructive interference. The experiment is a cornerstone of wave theory.
七、条纹间距公式 Δx = λD/s 的推导 | Deriving the Fringe Spacing Formula
The key equation tested in the double-slit experiment is the fringe spacing formula Δx = λD/s, where λ is the wavelength, D is the distance from the slits to the screen, and s is the slit separation. Bright fringes occur where the path difference is a whole number of wavelengths, so s sinθ = nλ. Since D is much larger than s, the angle θ is small, and the small-angle approximation sinθ ≈ tanθ = x/D applies, giving x = nλD/s. The spacing between adjacent bright fringes is therefore Δx = λD/s. The formula shows that longer wavelengths, a more distant screen, or narrower slit separation all produce wider fringes.
Stationary Waves: Nodes and Antinodes
When two waves of the same frequency and amplitude travel in opposite directions, they superpose to form a stationary wave. The most distinctive feature of a stationary wave is the presence of nodes, points that never move, and antinodes, points of maximum vibration. The distance between adjacent nodes, or adjacent antinodes, is half a wavelength. Stationary waves are common in strings fixed at both ends, such as guitar strings, and in air columns. The essential difference from progressive waves is that stationary waves do not transfer energy: the energy is trapped and oscillates back and forth between the nodes.
Single-Slit Diffraction and Diffraction Gratings
Diffraction is the spreading of a wave as it passes through a gap or around an obstacle; the narrower the gap, the more pronounced the diffraction. Single-slit diffraction produces a central bright fringe with fainter secondary fringes on either side. Unlike the double-slit pattern, the central maximum in single-slit diffraction is twice as wide as the others. A diffraction grating contains many equally spaced parallel slits and produces sharper, brighter fringes whose positions are given by d sinθ = nλ, where d is the grating spacing. Gratings are widely used to measure wavelengths of light accurately.
Refraction, Refractive Index and Total Internal Reflection
When light passes from one medium into another, its speed changes and it refracts. The refractive index is defined as the ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum to its speed in the medium, n = c/v. Snell's law relates the angles of incidence and refraction: n1 sinθ1 = n2 sinθ2. When light travels from a denser to a less dense medium at an angle of incidence greater than the critical angle, total internal reflection occurs and no light is refracted. The critical angle satisfies sin C = 1/n. Total internal reflection is the physics behind optical fibres and the sparkle of diamonds.
Optical Fibres and Data Transmission
An optical fibre consists of a high-refractive-index core surrounded by a lower-index cladding. Light enters the core and undergoes repeated total internal reflection at the core-cladding boundary, which keeps the signal confined and allows transmission over long distances with low loss. Optical fibres are widely used in telecommunications and medical endoscopes. Compared with copper cables, fibres offer greater bandwidth, lower attenuation, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. A-Level exams often test the conditions for total internal reflection in fibres and the calculation of the critical angle.
十二、Required Practical 3:双缝干涉实验要点 | Required Practical: The Double-Slit Experiment
AQA Required Practical 3 asks students to measure the wavelength of light using a laser and a double slit. The procedure is: set up the laser and double slit, place the screen at a large distance, typically more than two metres, measure the slit separation s and the slit-to-screen distance D, and measure the total width of several fringes before dividing by the number of fringes to find the fringe spacing Δx. The wavelength is then calculated using λ = Δx·s/D. Key ways to improve accuracy include measuring the total width of many fringes rather than one, increasing D to widen the fringes, using vernier callipers to measure s precisely, and never looking directly into the laser beam.
十三、AQA 高频考点与易错点 | High-Frequency Exam Topics and Common Mistakes
High-frequency topics in the AQA waves module include calculations using v = fλ, using polarisation to prove light is transverse, applying the fringe-spacing formula for Young's experiment, identifying nodes and antinodes in stationary waves, calculating the critical angle for total internal reflection, and describing data transmission in optical fibres. Common mistakes include confusing path difference with phase difference, forgetting that frequency is unchanged during refraction, treating the central maximum as the same width as other fringes in single-slit diffraction, and mixing up the energy-transfer behaviour of stationary and progressive waves. Practise past-paper questions on these topics and pay close attention to significant figures.
