FM1的考试不考新的运动学公式,而是围绕三个核心主题展开:动量与冲量(Momentum and Impulse)、功与能量(Work and Energy)、以及弹性碰撞与弹性绳(Elastic Collisions and Elastic Strings)。
Further Mechanics 1 (FM1) is the first mechanics module in Edexcel A-Level Further Mathematics, and it is often where students feel the biggest leap from ordinary mechanics to further mechanics. The FM1 exam does not introduce new kinematic formulas; instead it revolves around three core themes: momentum and impulse, work and energy, and elastic collisions and elastic strings. Once you grasp these three threads, seemingly disconnected questions can be strung together into a coherent problem-solving framework. Guided by the official mark scheme, this article breaks down the key points, formulas and common pitfalls section by section.
Definition of Momentum and Impulse
Momentum is the product of mass and velocity, written as p = mv with units of kg m s⁻¹; it is a vector pointing in the same direction as the velocity. Impulse is the accumulated effect of a force acting over an interval of time, written as I = Ft with units of N s. The most easily confused point here is the unit: since 1 N = 1 kg m s⁻², we have 1 N s = 1 kg m s⁻¹, so the units of impulse and momentum are exactly equivalent. This equivalence is a strong hint that the two quantities are deeply linked. Understanding the vector nature of both quantities is the prerequisite for every momentum question in FM1.
The Impulse-Momentum Principle
The impulse-momentum principle is the first cornerstone of FM1. It states that the impulse acting on a body equals its change in momentum, written as I = mv − mu, or in full form Ft = m(v − u). When using this formula you must first define a positive direction, usually rightward or upward, and then substitute velocities with their correct signs. Many students lose method marks simply because they wrote only magnitudes without declaring a positive direction, or they forgot the minus sign in front of a reversed velocity.
Conservation of Momentum
When two or more bodies interact and the system experiences no net external force, the total momentum of the system is conserved. Collisions, explosions and recoil problems can all be handled with conservation of momentum, written as m₁u₁ + m₂u₂ = m₁v₁ + m₂v₂. Note that this is a vector equation, so for two-dimensional situations you must write separate equations for the x and y directions. The key to deciding whether conservation applies is to confirm that the system as a whole experiences no net external force before and after the collision.
Work and Power
Work is the effect of a force acting along a displacement, given by W = Fd, or W = Fd cosθ when the force makes an angle θ with the displacement. Work is a scalar with units of joules (J). Power describes how quickly work is done, given by P = W/t; for a body moving at constant speed v, the power supplied by a driving force F is P = Fv. This P = Fv formula appears extremely often in problems about vehicles climbing slopes or moving at constant power, so in the exam you must clearly distinguish the "constant force" case from the "constant power" case.
Kinetic and Gravitational Potential Energy
Kinetic energy is the energy a body possesses by virtue of its motion, given by KE = ½mv². Gravitational potential energy is the energy a body possesses by virtue of its height, given by GPE = mgh, where h is measured relative to a chosen reference level. These two formulas are the foundation of the energy method. Note that the v in the kinetic energy formula is a speed, so squaring it removes any dependence on direction, while the h in the potential energy formula must be measured relative to a clearly defined zero level. The energy method is a powerful tool in FM1 for handling many problems involving variable forces.
Work-Energy Principle and Energy Conservation
The work-energy principle states that the total work done on a body by external forces equals the increase in its kinetic energy, W = ½mv² − ½mu². This is formally parallel to the impulse-momentum principle, but because energy is a scalar there is no need to handle directions, which makes the energy method more concise than the momentum method in many problems involving slopes, friction and variable forces. When only conservative forces such as gravity do work, mechanical energy is conserved: KE + GPE = constant. For problems involving friction or resistance, the work done against friction must be included in the energy equation.
The Coefficient of Restitution
The coefficient of restitution, written as e, is a dimensionless number measuring the elasticity of a collision. It is defined as the ratio of the speed of separation after the collision to the speed of approach before it: e = (v₂ − v₁) / (u₁ − u₂). Its range is 0 ≤ e ≤ 1. When e = 1 the collision is perfectly elastic and kinetic energy is conserved; when e = 0 the collision is perfectly inelastic and the two bodies stick together; values between 0 and 1 represent realistic intermediate collisions. FM1 questions usually state the value of e directly and require you to combine it with conservation of momentum to find the velocities after the collision.
Solving One-Dimensional Collisions
The procedure for solving one-dimensional collisions, where everything happens along a single line, is fixed. First, declare a positive direction; second, write the conservation of momentum equation m₁u₁ + m₂u₂ = m₁v₁ + m₂v₂; third, write the restitution equation e = (v₂ − v₁) / (u₁ − u₂); fourth, solve the two equations simultaneously for the two unknown velocities. If the question also asks for the loss of kinetic energy, subtract the total kinetic energy after the collision from the total before. The mark scheme is very generous with the "write down the two equations" step, so even if the final numbers are wrong, you can still secure the method marks as long as the equations are correct.
Vector Decomposition in Two-Dimensional Collisions
When a collision does not happen along a single line, such as a ball striking a wall obliquely or two balls colliding obliquely, the velocities must be resolved into two perpendicular directions. For an oblique impact with a smooth wall, the normal component, perpendicular to the wall, is reversed and scaled by the coefficient of restitution e, while the tangential component, parallel to the wall, is unchanged. For a two-dimensional collision between two bodies, write one momentum equation for the x direction and one for the y direction, then add the restitution relation along the normal direction. The key is to choose the axes wisely, usually with the x axis along the line joining the centres at impact.
Elastic Strings and Elastic Potential Energy
Elastic strings and springs obey Hooke's Law: the tension T is proportional to the extension x, given by T = (λx)/l, where λ is the modulus of elasticity and l is the natural length. The elastic potential energy is EPE = λx²/(2l). FM1 questions frequently combine elastic strings with the energy method, for example asking for the maximum speed or maximum extension after a body attached to an elastic string is released. To solve these you must switch flexibly between the equilibrium position and the energy conversions, and be especially careful not to confuse the natural length l with the extension x.
Common Pitfalls and Mark Scheme Guidance
According to the Edexcel mark scheme, the most common pitfalls in FM1 fall into a few categories. First, mishandling direction signs: forgetting to declare a positive direction, or omitting the minus sign on a reversed velocity, throwing the whole sign system into confusion. Second, unit conversion errors: questions often give data in km/h or grams, and you must convert to SI units, m/s and kg, before substituting. Third, writing the numerator and denominator of the restitution formula the wrong way round: remember it is "speed of separation divided by speed of approach". Fourth, in two-dimensional problems, forgetting to write separate equations for each direction and rushing to solve after writing only the x equation. Avoiding these four classes of error will secure most of the foundation marks.
Revision and Exam Strategy
Revision for FM1 should proceed along two parallel lines: memorising the formulas and mastering past papers. First organise the four groups of formulas, momentum and impulse, energy, restitution, and elastic strings, onto a single formula card and recite it daily until you can write every formula and explain each symbol without hesitation. Then practise by question type: pick classic past questions on one-dimensional collisions, two-dimensional collisions and elastic-string energy problems, and after each one check your work line by line against the mark scheme to see which method mark you missed. In the exam, do the confident momentum and energy foundation questions first, leave two-dimensional collision questions, which need longer reasoning, until the end, and build the muscle memory of writing the positive direction as soon as you write any equation.
