AQA A-Level
Scalars vs Vectors: What Sets Them Apart
In AQA A-Level mechanics, the first concept you must master is the difference between scalars and vectors. A scalar has magnitude only, with no direction, such as mass, temperature, speed and time. A vector has both magnitude and direction, such as displacement, velocity, acceleration and force. To decide which category a quantity belongs to, ask whether direction matters. The difference between displacement and distance is the clearest illustration: distance is a scalar that only records how far you travelled, while displacement is a vector that also records the straight-line direction from start to finish. Exams frequently test the distinction that velocity is a vector while speed is a scalar, so always draw arrows and state directions clearly to avoid losing marks.
Resolving and Adding Vectors into Perpendicular Components
When dealing with vectors at an angle, the most useful technique is resolution. Any vector can be split into two components along two perpendicular directions, usually horizontal and vertical. For example, a force F acting at an angle θ to the horizontal has a horizontal component F cos θ and a vertical component F sin θ. To find the resultant of several forces, resolve each force first, add the components in each direction, then use Pythagoras' theorem to find the magnitude of the resultant and the tangent function to find its direction. This method runs through the whole of mechanics: whether analysing an object on a slope or a projectile in flight, resolution and addition of vectors are fundamental skills that must be practised until they are automatic.
Motion Graphs: Gradients and Areas
Motion graphs are a high-frequency topic in AQA mechanics. The gradient of a displacement-time graph equals velocity, while the gradient of a velocity-time graph equals acceleration, and the area under a velocity-time graph equals displacement. A horizontal line on a velocity-time graph represents constant velocity, a straight sloping line represents uniform acceleration, and a curve represents changing acceleration. Learning to "read the graph" lets you solve many multiple-choice questions quickly: first identify the graph type, then read off the gradient and the area, and finally match them to the quantity the question asks for. Be careful to distinguish between "the area under the graph" and "the gradient at a point", which are two completely different concepts.
字母含义为:s(位移)、u(初速度)、v(末速度)、a(加速度)、t(时间)。五个方程分别是:v = u + at;s = ut + ½at²;v² = u² + 2as;s = ½(u + v)t;以及 s = vt - ½at²。
Uniformly accelerated straight-line motion is described by five key equations, known collectively as SUVAT. The letters stand for s (displacement), u (initial velocity), v (final velocity), a (acceleration) and t (time). The five equations are: v = u + at; s = ut + ½at²; v² = u² + 2as; s = ½(u + v)t; and s = vt - ½at². The key to using them is "know three, find the fourth": once the question gives three of the five quantities, the fourth can be found. List the known and unknown quantities first, then pick the equation that contains those four, to avoid blind substitution. Remember that these equations apply only when acceleration is constant, and not to motion with changing acceleration.
五、自由落体与重力加速度 g | Free Fall and the Acceleration of Gravity
Free fall is a special case of uniformly accelerated motion, where the acceleration is the constant gravitational acceleration g, about 9.8 m/s² at the Earth's surface (exams often use 9.81). The key lies in direction: if you take downward as positive, g is positive; if you take upward as positive, g is negative. A ball thrown vertically upward can be split into an upward stage and a downward stage, or handled in one go with the SUVAT equations, since the acceleration is -g throughout. Many marks are lost to sign errors, so the first step is always to define your positive direction and stick to it. A common trap is the condition that velocity is zero at the highest point, which is often used to find maximum height or time to reach the top.
Projectile Motion: Independent Components
The principle of projectile analysis is that horizontal and vertical motions are independent. Horizontally, with air resistance ignored, there is no force, so the object moves at constant velocity u cos θ. Vertically, gravity acts, producing uniform acceleration g. You can therefore write separate equations for each direction: constant-velocity s = ut horizontally, and the SUVAT equations vertically. To find the time of flight, start from the vertical direction, since the vertical displacement is zero on landing; to find the horizontal range, multiply the time of flight by the horizontal velocity. This method is more reliable than memorising formulas blindly, and it works for unfamiliar situations too.
Newton's Three Laws of Motion and Inertia
Newton's first law states that an object remains at rest or moves at constant velocity when the resultant force is zero; this is inertia. The second law gives the central relationship F = ma, resultant force equals mass times acceleration, which is the starting point for almost every dynamics problem. The third law states that action and reaction forces are equal in magnitude, opposite in direction, and act on different objects. A common mistake is confusing the third law's "reaction force" with a "balanced force": balanced forces act on the same object, while action and reaction act on two different objects. Exams often ask you to distinguish these, so always check whether the two forces act on the same object.
Free-Body Diagrams: The First Step
Drawing a free-body diagram is the first step in force analysis. Isolate the object and mark every force acting on it, including weight, normal reaction, friction and tension, then choose your axes and write the resultant force equations. For an object on a slope, rotate the axes to align with the slope, so that the weight splits into a component mg sin θ along the slope and mg cos θ perpendicular to it, while the normal reaction and friction are perpendicular and parallel to the slope respectively. A correct free-body diagram prevents the vast majority of direction errors, so it is worth taking the time to draw it carefully.
Momentum, Impulse and Conservation
Momentum p = mv is the product of mass and velocity, and it is a vector. Impulse equals force times the time it acts, and also equals the change in momentum: FΔt = Δ(mv). During a collision or explosion, if no external force acts on the system, total momentum is conserved. The solution steps are: first identify the direction in which momentum is conserved, then write the total momentum before and after and set them equal, and finally solve for the unknown velocity. Note that kinetic energy is also conserved in elastic collisions, while inelastic collisions conserve momentum only. The signs of the velocities are crucial in collision problems, so always define the positive direction before writing equations.
Work, Energy and Power
Work equals the component of force along the direction of displacement times the displacement, W = Fd cos θ, measured in joules (J). Kinetic energy is ½mv², and gravitational potential energy is mgh. The work-energy principle states that the work done by the resultant force equals the change in kinetic energy. Power is the rate of doing work, P = W/t, which for constant-velocity motion also equals P = Fv. Energy conservation is another shortcut in mechanics: when dissipative forces like friction are negligible, writing "initial energy equals final energy" is often faster and less error-prone than analysing the motion stage by stage.
The Principle of Moments and Equilibrium
A moment is the force multiplied by the perpendicular distance from its line of action to the pivot, measured in N m. For an object to balance about a pivot, two conditions must hold: the resultant force is zero (translational equilibrium) and the resultant moment is zero (rotational equilibrium). When calculating moments, always use the perpendicular distance rather than the distance along the rod, which is the most common error. Common question types include seesaws, suspended beams and ladders. Choose the pivot first, usually at a point where an unknown force acts so that it is eliminated, then write the equation that the total moment about the pivot is zero, and solve together with the condition that the total vertical force is zero.
Common Mistakes and Exam Strategy
AQA mechanics questions award marks for method, so "write the formula, substitute the values, state the units" are all essential. Frequent pitfalls include forgetting the direction signs of vectors, confusing force with mass, using the wrong trig function when resolving on a slope, unit conversion errors such as mixing up g and kg, and incorrect significant figures. Build a fixed template for common question types: first draw the free-body diagram, then write the equations, then substitute, and finally check the units and the reasonableness of the result. Practise past papers under timed conditions and learn the mark scheme's specific rules for method marks and significant figures, turning every common error into a guaranteed mark.
