Magnetic Flux Density and Magnetic Flux
Magnetic flux density B describes the strength of a magnetic field. It is defined as the force per unit current per unit length acting on a current-carrying conductor placed perpendicular to the field, so B = F/(IL), measured in tesla (T). The force is a maximum when the conductor is perpendicular to the field and zero when it is parallel. Magnetic flux Φ is the total amount of field passing through a surface, given by Φ = BA cos θ, where θ is the angle between the field direction and the normal to the surface. When the field is perpendicular to the surface (θ = 0), Φ = BA reaches its maximum; when the field lies parallel to the plane, the flux is zero. Flux is measured in webers (Wb), where 1 Wb = 1 T·m². The key distinction is that B describes the field strength at a point, while Φ describes the total field threading an area.
Force on a Current-Carrying Conductor
When a straight conductor of length L carrying current I sits in a magnetic field of flux density B, the force on it is given by F = BIL sin θ, where θ is the angle between the current and the field. This follows directly from the defining equation B = F/(IL). When θ = 90°, sin θ = 1 and the force is a maximum (F = BIL); when θ = 0° (current parallel to the field), the force is zero. The direction of the force is found using Fleming's Left Hand Rule: hold out the left hand with the first finger pointing along the field and the second finger along the current, and the thumb points in the direction of the force (motion). This force underpins electric motors, moving-coil loudspeakers and galvanometers.
Force on a Moving Charge
Electric current is simply the directed motion of charge, so we can rewrite F = BIL in terms of a single moving charge. Suppose charge q moves at speed v; in time t the charge passing through is q = It, and the length traversed is L = vt. Substituting into F = BIL gives F = B(q/t)(vt), which simplifies to F = Bqv. More generally, when the velocity makes an angle θ with the field, the Lorentz force is F = Bqv sin θ. The force is a maximum for motion perpendicular to the field and zero for motion parallel to it. Direction is again found with Fleming's Left Hand Rule, but for a negative charge (such as an electron) the conventional current is opposite to the motion, so the force direction is reversed. This is a common source of lost marks in calculations and multiple-choice questions.
Circular Motion of Charged Particles
When a charged particle enters a uniform magnetic field at right angles to the field, the Lorentz force F = Bqv is always perpendicular to the velocity. It therefore provides the centripetal force, causing the particle to move in a circle at constant speed. Equating centripetal force to the magnetic force, mv²/r = Bqv, gives the orbital radius r = mv/(Bq). Three useful consequences follow: the radius is proportional to speed (faster particles trace larger circles); the radius is inversely proportional to flux density (stronger fields give tighter circles); and the period T = 2πr/v = 2πm/(Bq) is independent of speed. The mass spectrometer exploits this: ions are accelerated by an electric field then deflected by a magnetic field, and ions of different mass-to-charge ratio follow different radii and are separated. Cyclotrons use the same circular-motion principle to accelerate charged particles repeatedly.
The Hall Effect
The Hall effect is a direct manifestation of the force a magnetic field exerts on charge carriers. When a current flows through a thin conductor placed in a perpendicular magnetic field, the moving charges are deflected by the Lorentz force and accumulate on opposite sides, producing a transverse potential difference called the Hall voltage V_H. At equilibrium the electric force balances the magnetic force: qV_H/d = Bqv. Substituting I = nAvq (where n is the number density of carriers and A the cross-sectional area) yields V_H = BI/(nqt), with t the thickness of the slice. The Hall effect has two key applications: measuring magnetic field strength (once n and t are known, measuring V_H gives B), and identifying the sign of the charge carriers. Positive and negative carriers are deflected in opposite directions, giving opposite Hall voltage polarity, and this effect was historically used to prove that electrons are the charge carriers in metals.
Fields of Straight Wires and Solenoids
Understanding how magnetic fields are produced and shaped is the foundation for electromagnetic induction. The field around a long straight current-carrying wire forms concentric circles, and its direction is given by the right-hand grip rule: grasp the wire with the right hand, thumb pointing in the direction of the current, and the curled fingers show the direction of the field. The field strength falls off with distance, B = μ₀I/(2πr). Inside a solenoid the field is nearly uniform and parallel to the axis; the direction is again found with the right hand, with the fingers curling in the direction of the current and the thumb pointing towards the field inside (the north pole). Inside the solenoid B = μ₀nI, where n is the number of turns per unit length. An iron core greatly strengthens the field, which is the principle behind electromagnets and transformers. Knowing these field patterns is essential for understanding changes in flux linkage later on.
Magnetic Flux Linkage
When a coil consists of N turns, each turn is threaded by the same flux Φ, and the total effect is described by the flux linkage NΦ, still measured in webers (Wb). For a coil of area A whose normal makes an angle θ with the field, the flux linkage equals BAN cos θ. As the coil rotates in the field, θ changes with time, and so does the flux linkage. The physical point is that the induced e.m.f. depends on the rate of change of flux linkage, not on its magnitude. A coil at rest in a strong field has a large but constant flux linkage and produces no induced e.m.f., whereas a rapidly rotating coil in a weaker field can generate a substantial e.m.f. simply because the flux linkage changes quickly. This is the core idea behind generator design.
Faraday's Law of Electromagnetic Induction
法拉第定律是电磁感应的核心公式:感应电动势的大小等于磁通链的变化率,即 ε = N ΔΦ/Δt(严格写为 ε = -N dΦ/dt,负号表示方向由楞次定律决定)。
Faraday's law is the central equation of electromagnetic induction: the magnitude of the induced e.m.f. equals the rate of change of flux linkage, ε = N ΔΦ/Δt (strictly ε = -N dΦ/dt, where the minus sign indicates the direction given by Lenz's law). To find the induced e.m.f. you must determine the change in flux ΔΦ and the time interval Δt over which it occurs. Three common situations arise: the field strength changes (as when an electromagnet's current varies), the coil area changes (as when a wire loop is pulled), or the coil rotates in the field (θ changes so that Φ = BA cos θ changes). The rotating coil is the most important case; here Φ = BA cos(ωt), and differentiating gives ε = BANω sin(ωt). The induced e.m.f. therefore varies sinusoidally with time, which is the origin of alternating current.
Lenz's Law
Lenz's law gives the direction of the induced current (or induced e.m.f.): the effect of the induced current always opposes the change in flux that produces it. When the flux through a coil increases, the induced current produces a field opposite to the applied field, opposing the increase; when the flux decreases, the induced field is in the same direction as the applied field, opposing the decrease. Lenz's law is fundamentally a statement of conservation of energy in electromagnetic induction: if the induced current did not oppose the change, energy would be produced without limit, violating energy conservation. A four-step routine works well in problems: identify the direction of the original field, decide whether the flux is increasing or decreasing, use the opposition principle to find the induced field direction, then apply the right-hand rule to find the induced current direction.
The AC Generator
The AC generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy through a coil rotating at constant speed in a magnetic field. When an N-turn coil of area A rotates at angular speed ω in a field of flux density B, the flux linkage is NΦ = BAN cos(ωt), and Faraday's law gives the instantaneous e.m.f. ε = BANω sin(ωt). The output is therefore a sinusoidal alternating voltage with a peak value ε₀ = BANω, meaning the peak is proportional to the number of turns, the area, the field strength and the angular speed alike. To increase the output you can add turns, enlarge the area, strengthen the field, or spin faster. One full rotation produces one complete cycle of the e.m.f., with a frequency f = ω/(2π). This is exactly the principle behind the 50 Hz alternating current used in national electricity grids.
Transformers
A transformer uses electromagnetic induction to change an alternating voltage. It consists of two coils wound on the same iron core. When an alternating current flows in the primary coil, it produces an alternating flux in the core; this changing flux links the secondary coil and induces an e.m.f. in it. For an ideal transformer (no energy losses), the ratio of secondary to primary voltage equals the ratio of turns: Vs/Vp = Ns/Np. If Ns exceeds Np it is a step-up transformer; otherwise it steps the voltage down. By conservation of energy (power in equals power out), VpIp = VsIs, so stepping up the voltage reduces the current correspondingly. This is why long-distance transmission uses step-up transformers to lower line current and hence reduce I²R heating losses. Transformers work only with alternating current: a steady direct current cannot produce a changing flux, so no e.m.f. is induced in the secondary.
Common Mistakes and Exam Techniques
Lost marks on magnetic-field and induction calculations usually come down to a few details. First, confusing the left-hand and right-hand rules: the left-hand rule gives the force (the motor effect), while the right-hand rule gives the direction of induced current (the generator effect). The mnemonic is "left for force, right for induction". Second, mixing up angles: θ in F = BIL sin θ is the angle between the current and the field, whereas θ in Φ = BA cos θ is the angle between the field and the normal to the area. Draw and label a diagram first. Third, unit conversions: areas are often given in cm² and must be converted to m² before use in Φ = BA. Fourth, forgetting that sin θ = 0 when a conductor or charge moves parallel to the field, so the force is zero even though flux still passes through. Fifth, in Lenz's law problems, skipping the step of first identifying the direction of the original field, which reverses the final answer. Use the four-step routine for every problem and write out each formula with its substituted values explicitly in your answer.
