IGCSE Waves
Transverse and Longitudinal Waves
Waves transfer energy from one place to another without the overall movement of matter. Waves are classified into two types according to the relationship between the direction of particle vibration and the direction of wave travel. In a transverse wave, the particles vibrate perpendicular to the direction the wave travels, as seen in ripples on water, waves on a rope, and all electromagnetic waves. In a longitudinal wave, the particles vibrate back and forth along the direction of travel, forming alternating compressions and rarefactions, with sound waves being the most familiar example. To identify the type of wave, simply compare whether the vibration direction is perpendicular or parallel to the direction of travel.
Wavelength, Frequency, Amplitude and Period
To describe a wave, you need four basic quantities. The wavelength, written as λ, is the distance between two adjacent points that are in phase, such as the distance between two neighbouring crests. The amplitude, written as A, is the maximum displacement of a particle from its equilibrium position, and it determines the energy carried by the wave. The frequency, written as f, is the number of complete oscillations per second, measured in hertz (Hz). The period, written as T, is the time taken for one complete oscillation, and it is the reciprocal of frequency: T = 1/f. On a wave diagram, the horizontal axis usually represents distance or time, and reading these quantities correctly is the first step to solving problems.
三、波速公式 v = fλ 的推导与计算 | The Wave Equation v = fλ
Wave speed, wavelength and frequency are linked by the wave equation: v = fλ, where v is the speed in m/s, f is the frequency in Hz, and λ is the wavelength in metres. This equation follows directly from the definitions: a wave travels one wavelength λ in one period T, so its speed is v = λ/T, and substituting f = 1/T gives v = fλ. There are three common ways this is tested: finding speed from frequency and wavelength, finding wavelength from speed and frequency, and comparing how frequency and wavelength change when a wave moves between different media. Always convert units carefully, especially changing frequency from kHz or MHz into Hz.
Reflection of Waves
When a wave meets an obstacle or a boundary between two media, it is reflected. The law of reflection states that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection, and that the incident wave, the reflected wave and the normal all lie in the same plane. The angle of incidence is measured between the incident direction and the normal, and the angle of reflection is measured between the reflected direction and the normal, where the normal is an imaginary line perpendicular to the reflecting surface. Reflection has many everyday applications: an echo is a familiar example of sound reflection, while radar and sonar use the reflection of electromagnetic waves or sound waves to locate objects and measure their distance.
Refraction and Wave Speed
When a wave travels from one medium into another, its direction changes if its speed changes and it is not travelling perpendicular to the boundary; this is called refraction. When water waves move from deep water into shallow water, their speed decreases and their wavelength becomes shorter, while the frequency stays the same, causing the direction to bend. The frequency is determined by the source and does not depend on the medium, and this is the key to understanding refraction: when the speed changes, the frequency stays constant and the wavelength changes accordingly. Light is also refracted when it enters glass from air, which is the basis of how lenses form images.
Diffraction of Waves
When a wave meets an obstacle or passes through a gap, it bends around the obstacle or spreads out behind the gap; this is called diffraction. The amount of diffraction depends on the width of the gap and the wavelength: the narrower the gap and the longer the wavelength, the more obvious the diffraction. Diffraction is most noticeable when the gap width is close to the wavelength, and when the gap is much larger than the wavelength, the wave travels almost in straight lines. This is why long wavelengths, such as low-frequency sound, bend around obstacles more easily than short wavelengths, and why we can hear someone talking around a corner even though we cannot see them.
How Sound Waves Travel
Sound waves are longitudinal waves produced by vibrating objects. When an object such as a drum skin or a guitar string vibrates, it pushes the surrounding air molecules to form alternating regions of compression and rarefaction, transmitting these vibrations outward as a wave. Sound requires a medium and cannot travel through a vacuum, which is why space is silent. Sound travels fastest in solids, more slowly in liquids, and slowest in gases, because the more tightly packed the particles, the faster the vibration is passed on. The human ear can hear frequencies from about 20 Hz to 20 kHz; sounds above this range are called ultrasound and those below it are called infrasound.
Echoes and Measuring Sound Speed
An echo is the reflection of a sound wave from an obstacle. Echoes can be used to measure distance: the total distance the sound travels there and back equals the speed multiplied by time, so the distance to the obstacle is d = (v × t) / 2, where t is the time between making the sound and hearing the echo. A classic experiment for measuring the speed of sound places two people a known distance apart; one fires a starter pistol and the other times the delay, then distance divided by time gives the speed, or an echo method can be used instead. A common exam trap is treating the round-trip time as a one-way time and forgetting to divide by 2.
Light Reflection and Plane Mirrors
Light travels in straight lines in a uniform medium and is reflected when it meets a mirror. Images in a plane mirror follow the law of reflection and are virtual images located behind the mirror, the same distance from the mirror as the object, the same size as the object, and laterally inverted. To construct a plane-mirror image, draw two reflected rays and extend them backwards; the point where the extensions meet is the position of the image. A periscope uses two parallel mirrors to change the path of light and is a typical everyday application of the law of reflection.
Light Refraction and Snell's Law
When light passes at an angle from one transparent medium into another, its speed changes and its direction bends; this is refraction. Snell's law is written as n = sin i / sin r, where i is the angle of incidence, r is the angle of refraction, and n is the refractive index of the second medium relative to the first. When light enters glass or water from air, it slows down and bends towards the normal; when it leaves glass or water into air, it bends away from the normal. The larger the refractive index, the slower light travels in that medium and the more it bends.
Total Internal Reflection and Optical Fibres
When light travels from a denser medium such as glass or water into a less dense medium such as air at an angle greater than a certain critical angle, it is no longer refracted out but is completely reflected back into the denser medium; this is total internal reflection. The critical angle satisfies sin c = 1/n. The most important application of total internal reflection is the optical fibre: light is repeatedly totally internally reflected off the inner walls, allowing it to travel long distances along a curved path, used for high-speed internet and medical endoscopes. Because total internal reflection loses no energy, optical fibres transmit signals far more efficiently than ordinary wires.
The Electromagnetic Spectrum
Electromagnetic waves are transverse waves that can travel through a vacuum at the speed of light, about 3 × 10^8 m/s. In order of increasing frequency, the electromagnetic spectrum is: radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays. They all travel at the same speed, differing only in frequency and wavelength; the higher the frequency, the shorter the wavelength and the greater the energy. Visible light is only a narrow band of the spectrum that our eyes can detect. Different parts of the spectrum have different uses: radio waves for broadcasting, microwaves for communication and heating, infrared for remote controls and thermal imaging, and X-rays for medical imaging.
