Edexcel A-Level
一、Edexcel A-Level政治的课程结构:三张试卷与考试形式 | Course Structure: Three Papers and Exam Format
Edexcel A-Level Politics, officially called Government and Politics, consists of three written papers, each lasting 2 hours and worth 84 marks. Paper 1 covers UK Politics and Core Political Ideas, Paper 2 covers UK Government and Non-Core Political Ideas, and Paper 3 covers Comparative Politics, where you choose between US Politics and Global Politics. The three papers are marked separately and combined into a single A-Level grade. This structure shapes the two-year learning pace: students typically complete the bulk of Papers 1 and 2 in the first year, then focus on comparative politics and consolidation in the second year.
Paper 1: The Four Themes of UK Politics and Core Ideas
Paper 1 has three parts. The UK Politics section covers four themes: democracy and participation, including debates over direct versus representative democracy and the voting age; political parties, covering party systems and party reform; electoral systems such as first-past-the-post and proportional representation; and voting behaviour and the media, covering class and age factors plus media influence. The Core Political Ideas section requires the core principles, evolution and internal tensions of liberalism, conservatism and socialism. Section A is a 30-mark source question, Section B a 30-mark essay, and the Core Ideas section has two 24-mark questions. Democracy and participation, along with electoral systems, are the most frequently examined themes.
Paper 2: UK Government and Non-Core Political Ideas
Paper 2 is also split into three parts. UK Government covers four themes: the constitution, including the features of the uncodified constitution and reform debates; Parliament, covering the composition and powers of the Commons and the Lords; the Prime Minister and the executive, covering prime ministerial power and the cabinet system; and the relationships between the branches, covering checks between executive and legislature and between judiciary and Parliament. For Non-Core Political Ideas, choose one of feminism, nationalism, multiculturalism, anarchism or ecologism to study in depth. The uncodified nature of the constitution and the debate over parliamentary sovereignty are the most central topics and appear almost every year.
Paper 3: Comparative Politics - USA or Global?
Paper 3 offers two routes. US Politics focuses on the US Constitution, including federalism and the separation of powers; Congress, covering bicameralism and the legislative process; the presidency, covering executive power and impeachment; and the Supreme Court, covering judicial review and landmark rulings, always compared with their UK equivalents. Global Politics examines sovereignty, global governance, human rights, the environment and regionalism, with a stronger theoretical flavour. Most schools default to US Politics because of its direct comparability with the UK and abundant material. The mark schemes for both routes are identical, so simply follow the route your school teaches.
五、三大评估目标AO1/AO2/AO3的分数占比与要求 | Three Assessment Objectives: Weightings and Requirements
Edexcel Politics has three assessment objectives. AO1, knowledge and understanding, is worth 30 percent; AO2, analysis, is worth 30 percent; and AO3, evaluation, is worth 40 percent. AO1 asks you to state concepts, examples and data accurately. AO2 asks you to unpack the cause-and-effect logic of arguments and explain why. AO3 asks you to judge how convincing competing viewpoints are and reach a justified conclusion, explaining which is stronger. Because AO3 carries the most weight, memorising facts alone earns only a mid-range grade; you must learn to weigh competing evidence.
The 30-Mark Source Question: Structure and Timing
The source question gives you two extracts, usually from opposing viewpoints, and asks you to answer using your own knowledge. A high-scoring structure has four steps: first summarise the core claim of each extract in one sentence; second quote the key evidence from the sources; third respond with your own examples and concepts, adding or rebutting; fourth reach an overall evaluation of how convincing each source is. In a 2-hour exam, allocate around 40 minutes to this question, spending the first 5 minutes reading the extracts and annotating key sentences and turning points.
The 30-Mark Essay: Argument Framework and Model Phrases
The essay question offers a choice of two, and you pick one. A high-scoring framework is to state a clear thesis and define key terms in the introduction, develop three body paragraphs each with one core point and two concrete examples, and finish with an overall evaluation that concedes the strength of the opposing view. Avoid listing facts without reaching a judgement. Useful phrases include "on the one hand... on the other hand", "the strongest counter-argument is..." and "despite..., on balance...", all of which directly boost your AO3 marks.
The 24-Mark Core Ideas Question: Marking Points
The Core Ideas question appears once in Paper 1 and once in Paper 2, worth 24 marks each, asking you to write an essay on an ideology. Marking focuses on three things: whether you use the ideology's core terminology accurately, such as "negative liberty" and "positive liberty" for liberalism or "tradition" and "gradual change" for conservatism; whether you reference key thinkers such as Locke, Burke or Marx; and whether you link ideas to concrete policies. Accurate terminology is the first prerequisite, and mixing up terms is penalised directly.
High-Frequency Topic: The UK Constitution and Parliamentary Sovereignty
The UK constitution is uncodified, built from statute law, common law, conventions and authoritative works, and this flexible character means it can be changed without special procedures. The doctrine of parliamentary sovereignty holds that Parliament can make or unmake any law, but EU membership, devolution, the Human Rights Act 1998 and the creation of the Supreme Court have all challenged it. High-frequency examples include the 2016 Brexit referendum, the 2019 Miller case ruling that the Prime Minister could not bypass Parliament to suspend it, and devolution to Scotland and Wales.
High-Frequency Topic: Electoral Systems and Voting Behaviour
Electoral systems are another high-frequency topic. First-past-the-post guarantees each constituency a clear representative and stable government, but it often produces a mismatch between votes and seats, disadvantaging smaller parties. Proportional representation reflects public opinion more fairly but can produce coalition government and unstable alliances. On voting behaviour, grasp how class, region, age, ethnicity and the media shape votes, plus key cases such as the traditional Labour red wall seats turning blue in 2019. Citing specific data best demonstrates AO1 and AO2.
Revision Timeline and Resource Checklist
Plan your revision in three stages. In stage one, three months before the exam, organise notes theme by theme and build index cards for each high-frequency case covering time, people, events and significance. In stage two, one month before, focus on the past five years of papers and self-mark strictly against the mark scheme, hunting especially for lost AO3 evaluation marks. In stage three, in the final week, do timed practice and memorise high-frequency terminology and key thinkers. For resources, rely mainly on the official Edexcel textbook and past papers, supplemented by the UK Parliament website and mainstream media for up-to-date examples.
Common Mistakes: Where Politics Students Lose Marks
The first mistake is treating politics as a pure memorisation subject, piling up facts without AO3 evaluation, which caps your grade at the mid-range. The second is writing a source answer that only restates the extracts without adding your own knowledge, which is marked as source dependence. The third is repeating the same point across essay paragraphs instead of advancing the argument. Avoiding these three mistakes is more effective than memorising ten more examples.
