What is a Mole? Avogadro's Constant
The mole is the chemist's counting unit. One mole of any substance contains 6.02 × 10²³ particles (atoms, molecules, or ions) -- Avogadro's constant. In IGCSE chemistry, the mole bridges the microscopic and macroscopic worlds, allowing us to count atoms in a beaker by weighing them. Remember: if you know the mass and the molar mass, you know the number of moles.
Molar Mass and Relative Atomic Mass
对于 H₂SO₄:(2×1) + 32 + (4×16) = 98 g/mol。
Molar mass is the mass of one mole of a substance in g/mol. Numerically it equals the relative atomic mass (Aᵣ) or relative formula mass (Mᵣ). For example: Aᵣ of carbon = 12, so 1 mol of carbon = 12 g. To calculate the molar mass of a compound, add up the Aᵣ of each atom. For MgO: 24 + 16 = 40 g/mol. For H₂SO₄: (2×1) + 32 + (4×16) = 98 g/mol. Always show your working -- CAIE examiners award marks for the process, not just the final answer.
Three Core Mole Formulas
IGCSE stoichiometry rests on three core formulas: (1) Moles = mass ÷ molar mass (n = m / Mᵣ); (2) Moles = gas volume ÷ 24 dm³ (at room temperature and pressure, r.t.p.); (3) Moles = concentration × volume (n = c × v). These three equations underpin every stoichiometry problem. At r.t.p., 1 mol of any gas occupies 24 dm³ -- note that IGCSE uses 24, not 22.4, because the condition is room temperature and pressure rather than STP. Memorise these three and you can solve any IGCSE moles question.
Balancing Equations and Mole Ratios
Balancing equations is the first step in any stoichiometry problem. The coefficients in front of each formula give the mole ratio between reactants and products. For example: 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O means 2 mol of H₂ reacts with 1 mol of O₂ to produce 2 mol of H₂O. Exam tip: balance metals first, then non-metals, and save hydrogen and oxygen for last. Common mistake: iron burns in chlorine to form FeCl₃ (not FeCl₂), because chlorine is a strong oxidising agent.
Mass-Mass Calculations: Reactant to Product
Mass-mass calculations are the most common IGCSE exam question type, appearing on virtually every Paper 4 (Theory) exam. Follow this five-step method: (1) Write the correctly balanced chemical equation; (2) Identify the mole ratio between the known substance and the unknown substance from the coefficients; (3) Convert the known mass to moles using n = m ÷ Mᵣ; (4) Use the mole ratio from step 2 to calculate moles of the unknown substance; (5) Convert moles back to mass using m = n × Mᵣ. Worked example: what mass of CaO is produced by heating 50 g of CaCO₃? The equation is CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂ (already balanced). Moles of CaCO₃ = 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5 mol. The mole ratio CaCO₃ : CaO is 1:1, so moles of CaO = 0.5 mol. Mass of CaO = 0.5 × 56 = 28 g. Practice this five-step method until it becomes automatic.
Limiting and Excess Reactants
When two reactants are mixed in a non-stoichiometric ratio, one runs out first -- the limiting reactant. The one left over is the excess reactant. The amount of product formed depends entirely on the limiting reactant, never the excess one. To identify the limiting reactant: calculate how much of the other reactant each one needs to react completely; whichever has insufficient actual amount is limiting. Typical exam scenario: given masses of two reactants, identify the limiting reactant and calculate the mass of product formed.
24 dm³ | Gas Volume Calculations: Moles and 24 dm³
Gas stoichiometry problems use n = volume ÷ 24. Remember this applies at r.t.p. only, not STP. Typical question types: (1) given gas volume, find moles; (2) given moles, find gas volume; (3) from mass of reactant, find volume of gaseous product. Worked example: what volume of hydrogen gas (in dm³) is produced when 2.4 g of Mg reacts with excess HCl? Mg + 2HCl → MgCl₂ + H₂. Moles of Mg = 2.4/24 = 0.1 mol, moles of H₂ = 0.1 mol, volume of H₂ = 0.1 × 24 = 2.4 dm³.
Solution Concentration and Titration Calculations
The concentration formula n = c × v is central to titration calculations. Watch your units: when concentration is in mol/dm³, volume must be in dm³ (cm³ ÷ 1000 = dm³). Standard titration steps: (1) use known concentration and volume to find moles of the known substance; (2) use the mole ratio from the balanced equation to find moles of the unknown; (3) use the volume of the unknown to find its concentration. Classic IGCSE question: titrating HCl of unknown concentration against NaOH of known concentration.
Percentage Yield and Practical Application
Chemical reactions in the laboratory rarely achieve 100% yield. Percentage yield = (actual yield ÷ theoretical yield) × 100%. Reasons for reduced yield include incomplete reaction, side reactions, and product loss during purification (filtration, evaporation, drying). In IGCSE exams, calculate the theoretical yield first via stoichiometry, then apply the formula. Typical yield questions provide actual mass and require you to calculate theoretical mass from the equation first.
Percentage Purity and Mixture Analysis
Percentage purity = (mass of pure substance ÷ total mass of sample) × 100%. These problems typically involve impure ores, industrial-grade materials, or partially decomposed samples where only a fraction of the sample actually participates in the reaction. The key approach: work backwards from the measured amount of product to calculate the mass of pure reactant that must have been present, then compare it to the total sample mass. Worked example: 10 g of impure limestone produces 3.52 g of CO₂ on heating. Find the purity of CaCO₃. The equation is CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂. Moles of CO₂ = 3.52 ÷ 44 = 0.08 mol. From the 1:1 ratio, moles of CaCO₃ = 0.08 mol. Mass of pure CaCO₃ = 0.08 × 100 = 8 g. Purity = (8 ÷ 10) × 100% = 80%. This means 20% of the sample was impurity.
Empirical and Molecular Formula Calculation
The empirical formula is the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms; the molecular formula gives the actual number of atoms. Steps for empirical formula: (1) divide the mass (or percentage) of each element by its Aᵣ to get moles; (2) divide all results by the smallest mole value to get the simplest ratio. From empirical to molecular: molecular formula = (empirical formula)ₙ, where n = Mᵣ(molecular) ÷ Mᵣ(empirical). Classic IGCSE question: given masses of combustion products (CO₂ and H₂O), work backwards to find the empirical formula.
Water of Crystallisation Calculations
Many salts contain water of crystallisation, such as CuSO₄·5H₂O (hydrated copper sulfate). To determine the number of water molecules: (1) find the mass difference between hydrated and anhydrous salt (the mass of water lost); (2) calculate moles of anhydrous salt and moles of water; (3) find the mole ratio. Worked example: 4.99 g of CuSO₄·xH₂O is heated to give 3.19 g of anhydrous CuSO₄. Find x. Mass of water = 4.99 - 3.19 = 1.80 g. Moles of CuSO₄ = 3.19/159.5 = 0.02 mol. Moles of water = 1.80/18 = 0.10 mol. x = 0.10/0.02 = 5.
In CAIE IGCSE Chemistry, the most common marks lost come from: forgetting to use the balanced equation's mole ratio, mixing up dm³ and cm³ for volume, incorrectly using 22.4 instead of 24 at r.t.p., ignoring the limiting reactant and calculating from the excess, and skipping working steps. CAIE mark schemes explicitly require full working -- even if the final answer is wrong, intermediate steps can earn partial marks. Before the exam, complete at least five full stoichiometry questions from past papers under timed conditions.
