Plant Nutrition
The Photosynthesis Equation
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants convert light energy into chemical energy, producing glucose and oxygen from carbon dioxide and water. The key equation you must memorise for IGCSE CAIE is: 6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂, in the presence of light and chlorophyll. Remember that this is an endothermic reaction -- energy is absorbed from sunlight and stored in the chemical bonds of glucose. The carbon dioxide diffuses into the leaf through stomata, while water is absorbed by root hair cells and transported via xylem vessels. The glucose produced can be used immediately for respiration, converted to starch for storage, or used to synthesise cellulose for cell walls, amino acids with nitrates, and lipids.
Leaf Cross-Section and Adaptations
The cross-section of a leaf reveals several specialised layers, each adapted for efficient photosynthesis. The upper epidermis is covered with a transparent waxy cuticle that reduces water loss while allowing light through. The palisade mesophyll cells are tightly packed, column-shaped, and packed with chloroplasts -- positioning most of the light-capturing machinery near the upper surface where light intensity is highest. The spongy mesophyll below has loosely arranged cells with large air spaces, facilitating rapid diffusion of carbon dioxide from the stomata to the palisade cells. The lower epidermis contains stomata, each surrounded by a pair of guard cells that control opening and closing in response to light intensity and water availability. During the day, guard cells become turgid and open the stomata; at night they become flaccid and close them to conserve water.
Essential Minerals and Uptake
Plants require mineral ions for healthy growth, and the two most critical ones for IGCSE are nitrate ions (NO₃⁻) and magnesium ions (Mg²⁺). Mineral uptake occurs via active transport in root hair cells, which requires energy from respiration. This is why waterlogged soils cause mineral deficiency -- the lack of oxygen inhibits aerobic respiration in root cells, reducing ATP production and thus slowing active transport. Root hair cells are adapted for absorption: their elongated shape provides a large surface area, and their thin cell walls reduce the diffusion distance. The concentration of minerals in the soil is usually lower than inside root cells, so diffusion alone cannot account for uptake -- active transport against the concentration gradient is essential, making this a classic exam question linking plant nutrition to cell transport mechanisms.
Nitrates and Protein Synthesis
Nitrate ions are essential for the synthesis of amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins. Plants combine nitrates with glucose (produced during photosynthesis) to form amino acids, which are then assembled into proteins needed for growth -- including enzymes, membrane proteins, and structural components. When nitrate is deficient, plants show stunted growth and the older leaves turn yellow (chlorosis). This happens because the plant mobilises nitrogen from older leaves and transports it to young, growing tissues, sacrificing the older organs to sustain new growth. In exam questions, you may be asked to explain why nitrate deficiency causes stunted growth: without sufficient amino acids, the plant cannot produce the proteins required for cell division and tissue formation.
Magnesium and Chlorophyll Production
Magnesium is the central atom in each chlorophyll molecule, making it absolutely critical for photosynthesis. Without magnesium, chloroplasts cannot produce chlorophyll, and the leaves turn yellow (chlorosis). The exam-specific detail to remember is the pattern: magnesium deficiency causes interveinal chlorosis, where the tissue between veins turns yellow while the veins themselves remain green. This differs from nitrogen deficiency, where the entire older leaf yellows uniformly. Magnesium is immobile in plants, meaning once it is incorporated into tissues, it cannot be easily relocated -- so deficiency symptoms typically appear first in older leaves. Exam questions frequently ask you to interpret images of leaves with yellowing patterns and deduce which mineral is deficient, so practice recognising these visual symptoms.
Three Limiting Factors
Limiting factors are a cornerstone concept in IGCSE Plant Nutrition. The three factors tested are light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration, and temperature. At any given moment, the rate of photosynthesis is limited by whichever factor is in shortest supply -- this is the limiting factor. Increasing this factor alone will raise the rate of photosynthesis until another factor becomes limiting. Light intensity affects the light-dependent reactions, CO₂ is the substrate for the Calvin cycle, and temperature affects enzyme activity. At low temperatures, enzymes work slowly, so reactions are sluggish. As temperature rises, the rate increases -- but only up to an optimum (usually around 25-35°C for most plants). Beyond about 45°C, enzymes denature, and the rate drops to zero irreversibly. Graph interpretation questions are common: you must identify the limiting factor from the shape of the rate curve and predict what happens when that factor is increased.
Classic Experiments and Variables
The two classic photosynthesis experiments required for IGCSE are the variegated leaf experiment (testing for chlorophyll) and the soda lime experiment (testing for CO₂ requirement). In the variegated leaf experiment, a leaf with both green and white patches is exposed to light, then boiled in ethanol to remove chlorophyll, and tested with iodine solution. Only the formerly-green areas turn blue-black, proving chlorophyll is essential. For the CO₂ experiment, one plant is enclosed with soda lime (which absorbs CO₂) and another without (the control). After the iodine test, the plant deprived of CO₂ shows no starch formation, while the control turns blue-black. Be precise about controls: in each experiment, all other variables -- light intensity, temperature, water availability, and time -- must be kept constant. Identify independent, dependent, and control variables clearly in your answers.
Xylem and Phloem Transport
Xylem and phloem form the plant's vascular system, and their distinct functions are a core topic in IGCSE Plant Nutrition. Xylem transports water and dissolved mineral ions from roots to stems and leaves -- this upward, one-way flow is called the transpiration stream. Xylem vessels are composed of dead cells with hollow lumens; their walls are thickened with lignin, which provides structural strength and prevents collapse under the tension created by transpiration. Phloem transports sucrose and amino acids from sources (photosynthesising leaves) to sinks (roots, developing fruits, growing shoot tips) in a process called translocation, which is bidirectional. Phloem consists of living cells: sieve tube elements, which lack nuclei but have perforated end walls called sieve plates, and companion cells that provide metabolic support. Exam questions often ask you to compare xylem and phloem in a table -- practise listing differences in cell type, transport direction, substances transported, and cell viability.
Transpiration: Mechanism and Factors
Transpiration is the evaporation of water from the mesophyll cells into the air spaces of the leaf, followed by diffusion out through the stomata. The cohesion-tension theory explains how water moves up the xylem: water molecules cohere to each other via hydrogen bonds (cohesion), forming a continuous column from roots to leaves; transpiration at the leaf surface creates tension, pulling the water column upward. Four environmental factors affect transpiration rate: higher temperature increases evaporation; higher humidity reduces the water potential gradient and slows transpiration; increased wind speed removes humid air near the stomata, steepening the gradient; increased light intensity causes stomata to open wider, facilitating greater water loss. A potometer measures water uptake, which can be used to estimate transpiration rate -- but be aware of this distinction as it is a common exam trap.
IGCSE exam questions frequently present you with symptoms and ask you to diagnose the mineral deficiency. The key rule: mobile nutrients (nitrate, magnesium, phosphate, potassium) show deficiency symptoms in OLDER leaves first, because the plant can relocate these elements to newer growth. Immobile nutrients (calcium, iron, boron) show symptoms in YOUNGER leaves first. Uniform yellowing of older leaves → nitrate deficiency. Interveinal yellowing (yellow between green veins) → magnesium deficiency. Farmers replenish minerals using fertilisers: NPK fertilisers contain nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. An extended-answer question may ask you to discuss the environmental impact of over-fertilisation, specifically eutrophication: excess nitrates and phosphates run off into water bodies, causing algal blooms that deplete oxygen and kill aquatic life. Connect this back to the nitrogen cycle for a top-band answer.
