GCSE Physics Radioactivity
Nucleus Composition: Protons, Neutrons and Isotopes
Every atom consists of a dense nucleus surrounded by orbiting electrons. The nucleus contains two types of nucleons: positively charged protons and neutral neutrons. The atomic number equals the proton count and determines the element's chemical properties, while the mass number is the sum of protons and neutrons. Isotopes are atoms of the same element with identical proton numbers but different neutron numbers. For example, carbon-12 (6 protons, 6 neutrons) and carbon-14 (6 protons, 8 neutrons) are isotopes. Their chemical properties are nearly identical, but their nuclear stability differs enormously -- this is precisely why unstable isotopes emit radiation. In Edexcel exams, students must accurately read proton, neutron, and electron counts from the superscripts and subscripts in atomic notation.
The Nature of Radioactive Decay: How Unstable Nuclei Release Energy
Radioactive decay is the spontaneous process by which an unstable atomic nucleus transforms into a more stable state. During decay, the nucleus releases energy and particles, potentially becoming the nucleus of a different element entirely. This process is completely random -- we cannot predict when any specific nucleus will decay; we can only describe the statistical behaviour of large numbers of nuclei. The rate of decay is unaffected by temperature, pressure, or chemical state, meaning radioactivity is a purely nuclear process independent of the atom's chemical environment. The Edexcel specification emphasises that students must understand the concept of "random nature" and distinguish it from "predictable statistical patterns."
Alpha Decay: Helium Nucleus Emission and Penetrating Power
An alpha particle consists of two protons and two neutrons -- essentially a helium-4 nucleus (⁴₂He). When a heavy nucleus such as uranium-238 or radium-226 undergoes alpha decay, the atomic number decreases by 2 and the mass number decreases by 4. Alpha particles have extremely strong ionising power: as they travel through matter, they violently collide with and strip electrons from atoms in their path, producing large numbers of ion pairs over a short distance. However, their penetrating power is very weak: a sheet of paper, a few centimetres of air, or even the dead layer of human skin can stop them completely. Because of this weak penetration, alpha sources are relatively safe outside the body, but if inhaled or ingested, their strong ionising ability causes severe damage to living tissue. Edexcel exams frequently test the use of alpha particles in smoke detectors -- the alpha source ionises air molecules, creating a tiny current that is disrupted when smoke enters the chamber, triggering the alarm.
Beta Decay: How a Neutron Transforms into a Proton
A beta particle is actually a fast-moving electron (⁰₋₁e), produced inside the nucleus by neutron decay. When a neutron transforms into a proton, the nucleus simultaneously emits an electron and an antineutrino. After beta decay, the atomic number increases by 1 (because there is one more proton), but the mass number stays the same. Compared to alpha particles, beta particles have weaker ionising power but greater penetrating ability -- they can pass through several millimetres of aluminium. This means beta sources are more dangerous outside the body, as they can penetrate skin to reach living tissue. Beta particles have an important application in industrial thickness monitoring: as material passes between a beta source and a detector, the number of beta particles received varies with material thickness, enabling real-time monitoring of paper or metal foil thickness. The Edexcel specification requires students to write beta decay equations and understand conservation of mass number and atomic number.
Gamma Radiation: Electromagnetic Waves, Not Particles
Gamma rays are fundamentally different from alpha and beta particles -- they are not particles at all, but high-frequency, high-energy electromagnetic waves. Gamma radiation typically occurs after alpha or beta decay, when the daughter nucleus is in an excited state and releases a gamma photon to return to its ground state. Gamma rays have the weakest ionising power but the strongest penetrating ability -- several centimetres of lead or several metres of concrete are needed for effective shielding. This makes gamma sources highly dangerous even outside the body, as they can penetrate the entire body. Medicine is the most important application area for gamma rays: cobalt-60 emits gamma rays used in cancer radiotherapy to precisely destroy tumour cells; technetium-99m emits gamma rays used in medical tracer imaging, helping doctors observe organ function and blood flow. Sterilisation is another major use -- high-dose gamma radiation can kill bacteria and pathogens on medical equipment.
Comparing the Three Radiations: The Inverse Relationship Between Ionising and Penetrating Power
Understanding the core relationship between alpha, beta, and gamma radiation is key to scoring well on Edexcel exams: the stronger the ionising power, the weaker the penetrating power. Alpha particles have the strongest ionising ability (producing dense ion pairs along their path), so they lose energy fastest and travel the shortest distance; gamma rays barely ionise directly, so they lose energy slowest and travel the longest distance. This inverse relationship is crucial in experimental design: the choice of radiation source depends on the specific application. For example, thickness monitoring (industrial) uses beta sources because they need to penetrate thin materials without excessive penetration; internal tracing (medical) uses gamma sources because the radiation must exit the body to be detected externally. Common exam practical questions require students to identify radiation types based on count-rate changes after different absorbers -- paper blocks most counts: alpha source; aluminium plate blocks: beta source; only lead blocks: gamma source.
Rules for Writing Nuclear Decay Equations
Nuclear decay equations are a guaranteed calculation question type in Edexcel GCSE Physics exams. The rules are based on two conservation laws: conservation of mass number (total mass number remains unchanged) and conservation of atomic number (total charge remains unchanged). Consider the alpha decay of uranium-238: ²³⁸₉₂U → ²³⁴₉₀Th + ⁴₂He. Verify: left side mass number 238, right side 234+4=238 (conserved); left side atomic number 92, right side 90+2=92 (conserved). Beta decay example: ¹⁴₆C → ¹⁴₇N + ⁰₋₁e. Note the atomic number increases from 6 to 7 (a neutron became a proton), while the mass number remains 14. Common exam mistakes include: confusing the direction of atomic number change between alpha and beta decay, forgetting the antineutrino in beta decay (not required by Edexcel but useful for complete description), and incorrectly writing the alpha particle as an He²⁺ ion rather than a helium nucleus.
Half-Life: From Random Decay to Statistical Patterns
Half-life is the time taken for half the nuclei in a sample of a radioactive isotope to decay. Although the decay of any individual nucleus is random, the statistical behaviour of large numbers of nuclei is highly stable, making half-life a characteristic constant for each radioactive isotope. For example, carbon-14 has a half-life of approximately 5730 years, iodine-131 has a half-life of 8 days, and polonium-214 has a half-life of just 164 microseconds. Edexcel exams require students to read half-life from decay curve graphs: find the point where the count rate has halved from its initial value -- the corresponding time is one half-life. Common calculation questions include: given initial mass and half-life, find the remaining mass after N half-lives. The solution is to divide the mass by 2 for each half-life, or use the formula: remaining mass = initial mass × (1/2)^N. Note that the sample after several half-lives has not simply "disappeared" -- the decay products have become a different element.
The Difference Between Contamination and Irradiation
Two concepts that candidates frequently confuse: radioactive contamination means radioactive material has attached to or entered the body, causing continuous internal exposure to radiation; irradiation merely means the body has been exposed to an external radiation source, and the exposure stops when the source is removed. Contamination is far more hazardous than brief irradiation because once an alpha source enters the body, its strong ionising ability continuously damages nearby cells. Medical staff handling radioactive sources wear protective clothing and lead aprons and use long-handled forceps to pick up sources -- all measures designed to minimise exposure time, maximise distance from the source, and place effective shielding material between the source and the body. In Edexcel exams, students must be able to analyse appropriate safety measures for specific scenarios (e.g. nuclear power plant leaks, medical radiotherapy, laboratory handling of radioactive sources) and provide scientific justifications.
Three Major Medical Applications of Radioisotopes
Medical applications of radioisotopes fall into three major categories. First, diagnostic imaging: short-half-life gamma-emitting isotopes such as technetium-99m (half-life 6 hours) are used as tracers, injected into the body and detected by a gamma camera to map their distribution in organs. The short half-life means the radiation dose is controllable and patient exposure is limited. Second, radiotherapy: strong gamma sources such as cobalt-60 or beta sources such as iodine-131 are used to target and destroy cancer cells. Iodine-131 is specifically absorbed by the thyroid gland, making it effective for treating thyroid cancer -- both normal thyroid cells and cancer cells absorb iodine-131, but cancer cells are more sensitive to radiation. Third, sterilisation: gamma rays penetrate packaging materials to kill microorganisms on medical equipment -- this is a cold sterilisation technique that does not damage heat-sensitive equipment the way high-temperature steam sterilisation would. Edexcel questions frequently combine these applications with the penetrating properties of different radiation types.
Background Radiation: The Natural Radiation All Around Us
Background radiation is the low-level radiation we continuously receive in our daily lives. Its main sources include: cosmic rays from space, naturally occurring radioactive isotopes in the Earth's crust (such as uranium, thorium, and their decay products), radon gas released from building materials -- radon gas is actually the single largest source of background radiation for UK residents, accounting for about 50%; in addition, radioactive isotopes in food (such as potassium-40 in bananas) and man-made sources such as medical X-ray examinations contribute. When conducting radioactivity experiments, it is essential to first measure the background count rate and then subtract this background value from experimental readings to obtain the true count rate of the radioactive source. Edexcel exam data-processing questions frequently require students to perform background radiation subtraction calculations -- a high-frequency scoring point.
十二、Edexcel考试中的放射性核心考点与答题策略 | Key Edexcel Exam Topics on Radioactivity and Answer Strategies
Synthesising Edexcel GCSE Physics past papers, the core examination topics on radioactivity focus on the following areas: first, accurately comparing the ionising power, penetrating ability, and deflection behaviour in electromagnetic fields of alpha, beta, and gamma radiation (alpha and beta are charged and deflect in different directions in magnetic fields, while gamma is uncharged and does not deflect); second, writing complete nuclear decay equations and verifying conservation of mass number and atomic number; third, extracting half-life from decay curves and performing related calculations; fourth, distinguishing between radioactive contamination and irradiation and proposing reasonable safety measures; fifth, matching radiation properties (penetrating power, half-life) to specific application scenarios (medical tracing, industrial thickness measurement, smoke detectors, carbon dating) and justifying the choices. In terms of answer strategy, Edexcel six-mark extended response questions require the use of scientific terminology and the construction of cause-and-effect chains, rather than simple listing of facts. For example, explaining "why gamma rays are used for medical imaging but alpha radiation is not" requires argumentation across three dimensions: penetrating ability, ionising power, and detection feasibility.
