IB TOK Exhibition
一、TOK Exhibition的本质:三个物品如何承载知识追问 | The Core: How Three Objects Carry Knowledge Inquiry
In the IB Diploma Programme, Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is one of the core pillars of the hexagon curriculum. The TOK Exhibition accounts for one-third of the total TOK grade (the other two-thirds come from the TOK Essay). Students are required to select one of the 35 official IA Prompts provided by the IBO and demonstrate how knowledge operates in the real world through three specific objects.
Unlike the TOK Essay, the Exhibition does not require a continuous essay. Instead, it asks you to "curate" — like a museum curator, you select objects and write exhibit labels. Each object requires one clear image and approximately 300 words of commentary, with a total word limit of 950 words across all three objects. The IBO uses a 0-10 grading scale, and the examiner's central concern is whether your chosen objects genuinely provoke deep reflection on your selected IA Prompt.
二、35个IA Prompt的分类逻辑:从知识框架中找到你的专属方向 | Classification Logic of the 35 IA Prompts: Finding Your Direction from the Knowledge Framework
The 35 Prompts provided by the IBO are not randomly arranged — they are rooted in TOK's Knowledge Framework. Understanding the internal classification of these prompts is the first step in topic selection. All prompts can be categorized according to the four elements of the Knowledge Framework. Choosing the right Prompt means you are already halfway to success — a good Prompt should make you think of at least two to three specific, analyzable objects the moment you see it. If you stare at a Prompt for over ten minutes and cannot think of any object, decisively abandon it.
2.1 范围类Prompt:知识领域的边界在哪里?| Scope Prompts: Where Are the Boundaries of Knowledge Areas?
What counts as knowledge?"(Prompt 1)、"Are some types of knowledge more useful than others?"(Prompt 2)、"On what grounds might we doubt a claim?"(Prompt 8)。
This category of prompts focuses on the scope and limitations of different areas of knowledge (natural sciences, human sciences, history, the arts, mathematics, etc.). Typical prompts include: "What counts as knowledge?" (Prompt 1), "Are some types of knowledge more useful than others?" (Prompt 2), "On what grounds might we doubt a claim?" (Prompt 8). When selecting this type of prompt, objects should demonstrate the ambiguity of knowledge boundaries or interdisciplinary characteristics. For example, a 17th-century celestial globe can show how astronomy separated from the "knowledge" of astrology to become an independent area of knowledge; a reproduction of Da Vinci's manuscripts demonstrates how artistic and scientific knowledge coexist seamlessly in one person.
2.2 方法与工具类Prompt:我们如何生产知识?| Methods and Tools Prompts: How Do We Produce Knowledge?
Does some knowledge belong only to particular communities of knowers?"(Prompt 14)、"Why do we seek knowledge?"(Prompt 17)、"What constraints are there on the pursuit of knowledge?"(Prompt 21)。
This type of prompt explores the methodology of knowledge production, including the nature of evidence, the role of models, and how values influence research methods. Typical prompts include: "Does some knowledge belong only to particular communities of knowers?" (Prompt 14), "Why do we seek knowledge?" (Prompt 17), "What constraints are there on the pursuit of knowledge?" (Prompt 21). When selecting this type of prompt, objects should demonstrate how specific communities produce knowledge through unique methods — for instance, a traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture bronze figure could explore how the TCM knowledge system is validated and transmitted within a particular cultural community; a detector component from a particle accelerator could demonstrate how high-energy physics knowledge depends on extremely expensive technological tools accessible only to a few.
2.3 伦理与价值观类Prompt:知识应该如何被使用?| Ethics and Values Prompts: How Should Knowledge Be Used?
How can we judge when evidence is adequate?"(Prompt 31)、"Who owns knowledge?"(Prompt 29)、"How can we know when we should act on what we know?"(Prompt 33)。
This category focuses on the ethical dimensions of knowledge production and the moral responsibility of knowledge application. Typical prompts include: "How can we judge when evidence is adequate?" (Prompt 31), "Who owns knowledge?" (Prompt 29), "How can we know when we should act on what we know?" (Prompt 33). Selecting this type of prompt requires objects that can carry clear ethical tension. A 19th-century surgical scalpel could explore the ethical contradiction between advances in surgical knowledge and the absence of informed consent at the time; a screenshot of a news report on gene-edited babies could interrogate whether scientific knowledge should be applied in the absence of ethical consensus.
2.4 视角类Prompt:知识如何被不同立场塑造?| Perspective Prompts: How Is Knowledge Shaped by Different Standpoints?
What is the relationship between personal experience and knowledge?"(Prompt 20)、"How important are material tools in the production of knowledge?"(Prompt 23)、"Does our knowledge depend on our interactions with other knowers?"(Prompt 12)。
This type of prompt emphasizes the historical, cultural, and personal nature of knowledge, exploring how different perspectives generate different knowledge claims. Typical prompts include: "What is the relationship between personal experience and knowledge?" (Prompt 20), "How important are material tools in the production of knowledge?" (Prompt 23), "Does our knowledge depend on our interactions with other knowers?" (Prompt 12). A family heirloom photograph can perfectly demonstrate how personal memory constitutes the raw material of historical knowledge while simultaneously being selectively filtered by narrative frameworks; a comparison of world maps from different countries can demonstrate how cartographic knowledge is shaped by political perspectives and cultural centrism — every map claims to be "accurate," but anyone who has studied geography knows that no flat map can perfectly "accurately" represent a spherical surface.
Practical Rules of Object Selection: From "Kind of Interesting" to "Analytical Goldmine"
In the IBO's official rubric, the quality of object selection directly determines the ceiling of the Exhibition. Here are three golden rules for object selection:
Rule One: Concreteness Over Abstraction
为什么是这一本而不是另一本?IBO明确要求:物品必须存在于特定的时间和空间中(exist in a particular time and place)。"
The first mistake many students make is choosing overly abstract objects. "A mathematics textbook" is not a good object — which one? Which edition? Why this one and not another? The IBO explicitly requires that objects must exist in a particular time and place. "The handwritten math notes my grandfather used the night before his 1978 Gaokao exam" is far more powerful than "a mathematics textbook" because it carries multiple layers of meaning: personal history, educational system transformation, and modes of knowledge transmission.
Rule Two: Extractability of Knowledge Questions
A good exhibition object must, at the moment of seeing it, evoke a knowledge question. When selecting an object, do a simple test: looking at this object, can you write down three knowledge questions related to it within 30 seconds? Knowledge questions must be second-order questions about knowledge itself — not "What is this object?" but "How do we know the knowledge represented by this object is reliable?" or "What knowledge did the creator of this object possess that others could not access?"
Rule Three: Internal Dialogue Across Three Objects
What role does imagination play in producing knowledge?",三件物品可以分别代表科学想象(一张达尔文雀喙形态的素描)、艺术想象(毕加索《格尔尼卡》的草稿)和技术想象(达芬奇的飞行器设计手稿),形成从自然科学到艺术到技术的知识生产对话。
A key characteristic of high-level Exhibitions is that the three objects form an internal dialogue. They are not simply three isolated exhibits arranged in sequence, but rather they collectively respond to the same IA Prompt from different angles and different contexts. For example, if the chosen prompt is "What role does imagination play in producing knowledge?", the three objects could represent scientific imagination (a sketch of Darwin's finch beak variations), artistic imagination (a draft of Picasso's Guernica), and technological imagination (Da Vinci's flying machine design sketches), forming a dialogue on knowledge production spanning from natural science to art to technology.
Structured Writing Template for the 950-Word Commentary: Replace Inspiration Anxiety with Framework Thinking
When facing an object, many students fall into the "what should I write" dilemma. Here is a four-paragraph writing framework validated through numerous high-scoring Exhibitions, approximately 300 words per object:
Paragraph One: Concrete Anchoring of the Object (50-60 words)
Describe the physical characteristics, origin, era, and context of the object. This paragraph requires no analysis — it only needs to help the examiner "see" the object in their mind. Example: "This is a German Leica M3 camera manufactured in the 1950s, body serial number 854201, purchased by my grandfather in Hong Kong in 1963. Its brass top plate shows the patina of age, yet its focusing system remains as precise as when it was made."
Paragraph Two: Positioning the Object in Its Knowledge Context (70-80 words)
Place the object within a specific area of knowledge or knowledge system. What role does this object play in this knowledge system? What type of knowledge does it produce? Example: "The Leica M3 represents the pinnacle of mid-20th century optical engineering knowledge — its coupled rangefinder system enabled photographers to record reality with unprecedented precision. Yet, the 'reality' in every photograph has passed through the compositional choices of the lens, the light selection of aperture control, and the instantaneous cut of the shutter."
Paragraph Three: Core Exploration of the Knowledge Question (120-140 words)
This is the core paragraph of the commentary. Directly respond to your chosen IA Prompt, using the object as a springboard to explore epistemological questions. Use TOK terminology (justification, interpretation, certainty, perspective, paradigm, etc.) and demonstrate critical thinking. Example: "This camera compels us to ask: is photography a recorder of objective knowledge or a constructor of subjective knowledge? If two photographs of the same moment from the same angle present starkly different 'facts' due to different exposure parameters, then where lies the reliability of photographs as 'evidence'? In the production of photographic knowledge, the selection of technical parameters — aperture, shutter speed, focal length — each parameter is a form of knowledge filtering, a deliberate cutting of the 'real'. The world we 'know' through the camera has always been mediated knowledge."
Paragraph Four: Linking the Three Objects and Exhibition Coherence (40-50 words)
Briefly connect the current object with the other two, demonstrating how you have built a coherent narrative of knowledge inquiry. Example: "Unlike the paradigm shift in astronomical knowledge in the first object (the celestial globe) and the exclusivity of knowledge by cultural communities in the second object (the acupuncture bronze figure), the camera reveals how technological tools simultaneously expand and constrain our capacity to acquire knowledge."
From 6 to 9: The Hidden Requirements Behind the Examiner's Rubric
The IBO's published TOK Exhibition rubric has four dimensions, but many secrets to high scores are not written in the literal text of the rubric. Understanding the "real meaning" of each score band is key to strategy formulation.
The 0-2 band typically belongs to cases where the basic requirements of the Exhibition are not understood — objects are too abstract, commentary lacks a knowledge dimension, or the chosen Prompt is simply not addressed. The 3-4 band's problem is "knowing there is a TOK dimension but not going deep enough" — students may mention TOK terms like justification or perspective, but they are used mechanically without genuinely connecting the object to a knowledge question. The 5-6 band is the most common score range, characterized by "meeting basic requirements without surprise" — object selection is reasonable, analysis is valid but shows no independent epistemological thinking. The 7-8 band begins to demonstrate genuine TOK thinking — students can identify the complexity and multi-layered nature of knowledge questions within objects. The 9-10 band represents the level few Exhibitions achieve, characterized by "impressive epistemological insight" — after reading, the examiner feels the exhibition has changed their way of understanding a certain knowledge question.
5.1 "Justified"的真正含义:不是合理,是有据 | The Real Meaning of "Justified": Not Reasonable, But Evidenced
The word "justified" appears repeatedly in the rubric. Many students understand it as "reasonable," but this is not precise enough. In the TOK context, "justification" means you must provide explicit reasons and support for every knowledge claim. Simply saying "this object provokes thinking about the reliability of knowledge" is insufficient — you need to show how you derived the knowledge question from the specific features of the object. Every step of reasoning must be explicitly displayed in the text.
The "Diversity and Unity" Paradox of Three Objects
High-scoring Exhibitions (7-10) all demonstrate a delicate balance: the three objects are sufficiently diverse in type (don't make them all books or all digital products), yet they form a unified analytical arc in responding to the IA Prompt. The most effective strategy is to design a "knowledge narrative arc" — the first object establishes the question, the second deepens the contradiction, and the third provides insight or reveals limitations.
Object Images Are Also Part of the Analysis
An often-overlooked fact is that when examiners read your commentary, they are also looking at the images of your objects. The quality of your images (clarity, composition), which angle you choose to show the object, and what background information the image contains — all of these silently communicate knowledge claims. A carelessly taken photograph can make the examiner question your investment in the exhibition, while a well-composed photograph of an old book with library shelves as the background silently anchors the object's knowledge context.
Common Selection Pitfalls and a Self-Check Checklist
Before submitting your Exhibition, use the following questions to check your choices one by one. Every year, many students lose marks due to avoidable errors — errors that stem not from "insufficient knowledge" but from "misunderstanding of the rules."
Object Checklist:
1. Does each object exist in a particular time and place? "A dictionary" fails; "the pocket English-Chinese dictionary my grandmother carried when she immigrated in 1949" passes.
2. Does each object have a clear knowledge dimension? A purely sentimental object (like a stuffed toy from a family member) is unsuitable if no knowledge question can be extracted from it.
3. Is there an internal dialogue among the three objects rather than mere juxtaposition? If the three objects can be rearranged in any order without affecting the exhibition's argumentative force, they have not formed a narrative arc.
4. Are the object images clear and thoughtfully composed? A blurry phone snapshot and a carefully lit high-resolution photograph convey entirely different messages. The examiner's first impression of the image will influence their reading expectations for the commentary.
5. Is the provenance of each object traceable? You cannot choose "some kind of thing" of unknown origin found through random online searching. Personal objects are best, as they naturally possess uniqueness and personal connection.
Commentary Checklist:
4. Does each object's commentary explicitly reference your chosen IA Prompt? Don't make the examiner "guess" your prompt from the commentary.
5. Do your knowledge claims have clear justification? Check whether each paragraph has key TOK terminology supporting your argument.
6. Do the three commentaries together tell a complete story? Reading all 950 words, can you extract a unified core thesis?
