Half Term
For students in the UK and international schools following the British curriculum, Half Term is a precious one-week break that arrives three times a year — typically in October, February, and May. Unlike the long summer holiday, Half Term sits right in the middle of an academic term. You have just covered several weeks of new content, and exams or mock assessments are often just a few weeks away. This makes Half Term the single most strategic study window in the school calendar.
Many students make the mistake of treating Half Term as a complete switch-off — only to return to school feeling overwhelmed and behind. The sweet spot lies in a balanced, structured approach: enough rest to recharge, enough study to turn the break into a genuine advantage.
Step 1 — Audit Your Starting Point
Before you plan anything, take an honest inventory. Open your subject folders and ask yourself three questions for each subject:
- Which topics do I genuinely understand well?
- Which topics can I do, but slowly or with uncertainty?
- Which topics make me freeze when they appear on a paper?
Be brutally honest. One hour spent fixing a genuine weak spot is worth five hours of passively re-reading notes you already know.
Step 2 — Build a Realistic Daily Schedule
A Half Term week has roughly 50-60 usable waking hours after sleep, meals, and breaks. Design each day around three focused study blocks:
Half Term
- Morning Block (9:00-12:00): Your freshest hours. Tackle the hardest subject — the one from your "freeze" list.
- Afternoon Block (14:00-17:00): Past paper practice, essay planning, or a subject you need to speed up.
- Evening Review (19:00-20:00): Light consolidation — flashcards, summary sheets, or a quick revision video.
Leave the rest of the day free. A well-rested brain learns faster than an exhausted one.
Step 3 — Past Papers Are Your Best Friend
If you do only one thing this Half Term, make it past papers. The exam tests whether you can apply understanding under timed conditions in the format the exam board expects.
- GCSE: Start with the most recent 3 years from your exam board. Do them timed, mark using the official mark scheme, and write down every mark you lost and why.
- A-Level: Focus on long-answer and essay questions. Practice structuring essays in 25-30 minutes, not 45. Speed comes from repetition.
- IB: Paper 2 and Paper 3 for sciences, Paper 1 for humanities. Pay special attention to command terms like "evaluate," "discuss," and "to what extent."
Step 4 — Active Recall Over Passive Reading
Reading through your notes feels productive but is one of the least effective revision techniques. Your brain mistakes familiarity for mastery. To actually learn, retrieve information from memory without looking at the source.
- Blurting: Close your book and write everything you remember on a blank sheet. Then open the book and fill in gaps in a different colour. The coloured gaps are your priority list.
- Teach it: Explain a concept out loud as if teaching a beginner. If you cannot explain it simply, you do not understand it well enough.
- Spaced repetition: Review flashcards at increasing intervals — 1 day, 3 days, 7 days — to move information into long-term memory.
Step 5 — Protect Your Wellbeing
The most successful students are not the ones who study the most hours — they are the ones who study effectively and sustain it. Protect three things:
- Sleep: 7-9 hours. Sleep consolidates the day's learning into long-term memory. Cutting sleep to study more is self-defeating.
- Movement: 30 minutes of exercise daily. Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain and reduces stress hormones.
- Social connection: Do not isolate for a whole week. A coffee with a friend or a study session with classmates keeps morale high.
Step 6 — Use Quality Resources
Half Term is too short to waste on low-quality materials. The official specification document from your exam board website is your single most important resource — it tells you exactly what can and cannot appear on the exam. Past papers, examiner reports, and mark schemes from the exam board website are free and authoritative. For additional practice, use well-reviewed revision guides that match your syllabus code.
Half Term
A good Half Term is not about doing everything — it is about doing the right things well. Pick two or three weak areas, attack them with past papers and active recall, and return to school knowing you have turned a corner.
