AQA GCSE
Germany 1890-1945: Democracy and Dictatorship 是AQA GCSE历史Paper 1的核心模块。
Germany 1890--1945: Democracy and Dictatorship is a core module in AQA GCSE History Paper 1. This period covers three regimes -- Imperial Germany, the Weimar Republic, and Nazi Germany -- spanning over five decades of dramatic political change. This guide breaks down every high-frequency exam topic to help you achieve top marks.
AQA Paper 1 Section A/B
The exam consists of six compulsory questions worth 40 marks in total. Question types include 4-mark source analysis, 8-mark interpretation comparison, and 12-mark bullet-point essays. Allocate 50 minutes total, reserving at least 15 minutes for the 12-mark question. The paper emphasises two assessment objectives: analysing historical sources (AO3) and evaluating historical interpretations (AO4), rather than mere factual recall.
Kaiser Wilhelm II dismissed Bismarck in 1890 and pursued "personal rule" and Weltpolitik -- a world policy aimed at challenging British naval supremacy. The Navy Laws of 1898 and 1900 drove massive military spending. Meanwhile, Germany's industry boomed: steel production surpassed Britain's by 1913, and its chemical and electrical industries led the world. Yet social tensions mounted: the SPD became the largest Reichstag party in 1912, demanding political reform. The naval arms race and militaristic culture fuelled nationalism but also sowed the seeds of war.
Germany initially united behind the war effort under "Burgfrieden" (castle peace). But the British naval blockade caused severe food shortages -- the "Turnip Winter" of 1916--17 saw daily calorie intake fall below 1,000, shattering civilian morale. In October 1918, sailors at Kiel refused orders to attack, sparking the Kiel Mutiny that escalated into a nationwide revolution. On 9 November, Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated and fled to the Netherlands while Scheidemann proclaimed the republic. The new government signed the armistice, but the "stab-in-the-back myth" (Dolchstosslegende) -- the lie that the army was betrayed by politicians at home rather than defeated on the battlefield -- combined with Article 231 of the Treaty of Versailles (the "war guilt clause") to become a devastating propaganda weapon for the Nazis.
On paper, the Weimar Constitution was remarkably democratic: universal suffrage, proportional representation, and guaranteed basic rights. But proportional representation produced unstable coalitions, and Article 48 gave the president emergency powers to bypass the Reichstag. From 1919 to 1923, the Republic faced existential crises: the Spartacist uprising on the left and the Kapp Putsch on the right exposed the army's lack of loyalty. The French occupation of the Ruhr triggered "passive resistance", which spiralled into the hyperinflation of 1923 -- a loaf of bread costing 200 billion marks. Middle-class savings were wiped out, irreversibly damaging trust in democracy. Yet Gustav Stresemann, as Chancellor and Foreign Minister, introduced the Rentenmark to stabilise the currency and secured American loans through the Dawes Plan (1924), ushering in a brief economic recovery.
Between 1924 and 1929, Germany experienced a period of relative stability and prosperity. Stresemann improved Franco-German relations through the Locarno Pact (1925), and Germany joined the League of Nations in 1926. Economically, American loans fuelled industrial modernisation, housing construction, and infrastructure development. Culturally, Weimar Berlin became Europe's most avant-garde hub -- the Bauhaus school redefined modern architecture, expressionist films like Metropolis captivated audiences worldwide, and cabaret culture and jazz flourished. But this golden age had a dark side: economic growth depended on short-term American loans, while farmers and sections of the working class were left behind. Nationalists viewed cultural experimentation as evidence of "degeneracy". When Stresemann died in 1929 and Wall Street crashed, the fate of the Weimar Republic was sealed.
After the Wall Street Crash of 1929, American banks immediately recalled their German loans. Industrial output plummeted by 40%, and unemployment soared from 1.3 million in 1929 to over 6 million by 1932. Chancellor Brüning's austerity policies -- cutting spending and raising taxes -- deepened the misery and destroyed faith in democratic government. The Nazis exploited this crisis brilliantly: Hitler promised "work and bread" and stirred nationalist pride with his oratory; Goebbels' propaganda machine blamed communists, Jews, and the Versailles Treaty for Germany's suffering; the SA (Brownshirts) projected both violence and "order" on the streets. In the September 1930 election, the Nazis leapt from 12 seats to 107, becoming the second-largest Reichstag party. By July 1932, they won 230 seats (37.3% of the vote), making them the largest party.
(Night of the Long Knives)清洗了SA领袖Röhm及其追随者,消除了军方最后的顾虑。
On 30 January 1933, Hindenburg appointed Hitler as Chancellor -- the conservative elites believed they could "control" him. Within six months, Hitler dismantled Weimar democracy entirely. The Reichstag Fire of 27 February was blamed on communists, and Hitler persuaded Hindenburg to sign the Reichstag Fire Decree, suspending civil liberties. In the March election, the Nazis secured 43.9% through intimidation, and with DNVP support gained a majority. On 23 March, the Enabling Act passed 444--94 -- only the SPD voted against it, while the Centre Party supported it based on Hitler's false promises. This gave the government legislative power without Reichstag approval. Gleichschaltung (coordination) then brought state governments, trade unions, media, and education under Nazi control. The Night of the Long Knives in June 1934 purged SA leader Röhm and his followers, removing the army's last reservations. When Hindenburg died in August, Hitler merged the offices of Chancellor and President, declaring himself Führer.
The Nazis maintained control through a dual system of terror and propaganda. Under Himmler, the SS developed into a state-within-a-state, controlling the concentration camp system and the Gestapo secret police. A culture of denunciation permeated society -- neighbours, colleagues, and even children were encouraged to report "anti-social" behaviour. Goebbels' Ministry of Propaganda controlled all media: newspapers were forced to print Nazi news, cheap Volksempfänger radios delivered Hitler's speeches into every home, and Leni Riefenstahl's film Triumph of the Will elevated political propaganda to art. The public book burnings of May 1933 purged "un-German" literature, while the 1936 Berlin Olympics provided a stage to showcase Nazi Germany's "respectable" face to the world. The education system was transformed -- Rassenkunde (racial science) entered the curriculum, and textbooks portrayed Jews as vermin. Youth indoctrination was systematic: the Hitler Youth and League of German Maidens shaped an entire generation of loyal Nazis through sports, paramilitary training, and ideological instruction.
The apparent success of Nazi economic policy is frequently tested through interpretation questions. Hitler reduced unemployment through massive public works -- notably the Autobahn motorway programme -- and rearmament: official unemployment fell from 6 million in 1933 to near zero by 1939, though statistics excluded women and Jews. The Four Year Plan of 1936, led by Göring, pursued economic self-sufficiency (Autarky), promoting synthetic rubber and fuel production. The "Strength through Joy" (KdF) scheme offered workers cheap holidays and cultural activities, while the Volkswagen savings scheme promised every family a car -- though none were delivered before war broke out. Nazi policy towards women embodied the conservative ideal of "Kinder, Küche, Kirche" (children, kitchen, church): working women were encouraged to leave employment, and marriage loans were conditional on childbearing. However, labour shortages after 1937 forced the regime to adjust, with women returning to factories. Policy towards the churches shifted from initial cooperation -- the 1933 Reichskonkordat with the Vatican -- to repression, with Niemöller's Confessing Church becoming a significant symbol of resistance.
1941年入侵苏联后,Einsatzgruppen(特别行动队)开始大规模枪杀犹太人。
Nazi racial policy escalated from legal discrimination to systematic extermination, one of the most heavily examined topics at GCSE. The Nuremberg Laws of 1935 stripped Jews of citizenship and banned marriage between Jews and "Aryans". Kristallnacht on 9--10 November 1938 saw Jewish shops and synagogues looted and burned nationwide -- 91 Jews were killed and approximately 30,000 sent to concentration camps. Thereafter, Jews were forced to wear the yellow star and businesses were "aryanised". After the outbreak of World War II in 1939, ghettos established in occupied Poland saw mass death from starvation and disease. The 1941 invasion of the Soviet Union brought Einsatzgruppen mass shootings. In January 1942, the Wannsee Conference formalised the "Final Solution" -- the industrialised murder of Jews across Europe transported by rail to extermination camps such as Auschwitz-Birkenau. The exam often expects you to engage with the intentionalist versus structuralist historiographical debate when analysing responsibility: was the Holocaust the result of Hitler's long-term plan or a process of cumulative radicalisation? Remember: the exam does not require graphic description of atrocities; it tests causal analysis and impact evaluation.
In the war's early years, Blitzkrieg achieved stunning victories -- Poland and France fell, and Germany appeared invincible on the continent. On the home front, the war economy maintained living standards, and Albert Speer's appointment as Armaments Minister in 1942 dramatically boosted weapons production. But Stalingrad (1942--43) marked the turning point: the Sixth Army was annihilated, and Goebbels' "Total War" speech demanded every sacrifice from the nation. Allied strategic bombing -- particularly the Hamburg firestorm of 1943 and the Dresden bombing of 1945 -- destroyed cities and morale. On 20 July 1944, Stauffenberg's failed assassination attempt on Hitler revealed desperation within the military. In April 1945, Soviet forces entered Berlin; Hitler committed suicide in his bunker. Germany surrendered unconditionally on 8 May 1945. In the aftermath, the Allies implemented denazification, and the Nuremberg Trials charged senior Nazis with "crimes against humanity".
4分"source analysis"题使用"I DEAL"框架:Inference(推论)、Detail(细节)、Explanation(解释)、And more(另一层含义)。
For 4-mark source analysis questions, use the "I DEAL" framework: Inference, Detail, Explanation, And more (another layer of meaning). Always quote specific words from the source rather than paraphrasing. The 8-mark interpretation question requires you to compare differences between two interpretations, then judge which is more convincing using three dimensions: CONTENT (what does the interpretation say?), PROVENANCE (who wrote it and why?), and CONTEXT (what was happening when it was written?). The 12-mark essay question creates the widest mark gaps. Plan your argument by listing 3--4 bullet points first. Every bullet must include both factual detail and analysis -- facts alone score nothing. Common pitfalls include: confusing the Weimar Constitution with the Basic Law, believing Kaiser Wilhelm II single-handedly caused WWI (in reality, the July Crisis of 1914 involved multiple powers), misdating Kristallnacht to 1936, and forgetting to mention the Dolchstosslegende when explaining the Nazi rise to power.
