In physics, all quantities fall into two broad categories: scalars and vectors. Scalars possess magnitude only, with no directional component -- examples include mass, time, temperature, energy, and distance. Vectors possess both magnitude and direction -- examples include displacement, velocity, acceleration, force, and momentum. Understanding this fundamental distinction is the first step toward mastering IB Physics and underpins all subsequent topics in mechanics, electromagnetism, and waves.
Distance versus displacement is the classic scalar-vector comparison. If you run once around a rectangular track and return to your starting point, your distance travelled is 400 metres (scalar), but your displacement is zero metres (vector) because you end where you began. Similarly, speed is a scalar while velocity is a vector -- a car moving at constant speed around a circular track has unchanging speed but continuously changing velocity, because its direction constantly shifts. IB exam questions frequently use precisely these contrasts to test conceptual understanding.
Vectors can be represented in three ways: graphically (using arrows), in component form, and in unit vector notation. In graphical representation, the arrow's length indicates magnitude and its orientation indicates direction. Component representation decomposes a vector into x and y components, written as v = (v_x, v_y) or in column form. Unit vector notation employs i, j, and k (in three dimensions) to denote unit vectors along the x, y, and z axes respectively -- for example, F = 3i + 4j N. The IB Physics syllabus requires students to convert fluently among all three representation modes.
Vector addition is not simply numerical -- direction must be accounted for. The two fundamental graphical methods are the triangle method and the parallelogram method. In the triangle method, the tail of the second vector is joined to the head of the first, and the resultant is drawn from the tail of the first to the head of the second. In the parallelogram method, both vectors originate from the same point, a parallelogram is constructed with them as adjacent sides, and the diagonal represents the resultant. In IB examinations, students must be able to produce accurate scale drawings and measure both the magnitude and direction of the resultant vector.
Vector subtraction can be handled by converting it to addition: A − B = A + (−B). A negative vector simply reverses the direction of the original while preserving its magnitude. For instance, if B is 5 m/s east, then −B is 5 m/s west. This approach unifies addition and subtraction into a single operation, eliminating the need for memorising two separate sets of rules. Vector subtraction is particularly important in relative motion problems -- for example, calculating an aircraft's ground speed under crosswind conditions requires subtracting the wind velocity vector from the airspeed vector.
Resolving vectors into perpendicular components is one of the most frequently used techniques in IB Physics. A force F acting at an angle θ to the horizontal can be resolved into a horizontal component F cos θ and a vertical component F sin θ. This technique is essential in inclined plane problems -- resolving the weight into components parallel and perpendicular to the plane makes applying Newton's Second Law straightforward. Orthogonal resolution also underpins the treatment of circular motion and projectile motion.
A·B = |A||B| cos θ。
The scalar product, or dot product, multiplies two vectors to yield a scalar: A·B = |A||B| cos θ. The dot product is maximised when vectors are parallel (θ = 0°) and zero when they are perpendicular (θ = 90°). In physics, work is defined as the dot product of force and displacement: W = F·d = Fd cos θ. This explains why a force perpendicular to the direction of motion does no work -- when θ = 90°, cos 90° = 0. IB Physics expects students to understand the geometric interpretation of the dot product and apply it in energy calculations.
The vector product, or cross product, multiplies two vectors to produce a new vector: |A × B| = |A||B| sin θ, with direction given by the right-hand rule. Important applications of the cross product in physics include torque (τ = r × F), angular momentum (L = r × p), and the Lorentz force on a moving charge in a magnetic field (F = qv × B). IB Physics Higher Level requires students to compute cross product magnitudes and determine resultant directions.
Kinematics is a natural domain for vector application. Displacement s, velocity v, and acceleration a are all vectors, and their directions are critical to understanding motion. In projectile motion, resolving the initial velocity into horizontal and vertical components is the standard solution approach -- the horizontal component remains constant (neglecting air resistance), while the vertical component is continuously affected by gravitational acceleration g = 9.81 m/s². The SUVAT equations are applied as scalars in one-dimensional motion, but students must constantly track vector components when dealing with two-dimensional motion. The free-body diagram is the most essential tool in IB Physics, visually representing all forces acting on a body as vector arrows.
When a body is in equilibrium, the net force acting on it is zero: ΣF = 0. This means the vector sum of all forces is zero -- not merely the algebraic sum, but the sum of components in every direction must be zero. Three-force equilibrium problems are common in IB examinations: if three non-parallel forces act on a body in equilibrium, they must form a closed vector triangle. For more than three forces, resolving into horizontal and vertical components and summing each independently is the standard method. Lami's Theorem provides an elegant solution for three-force equilibrium and appears occasionally in IB HL examinations.
Common student mistakes in vector work include: confusing distance with displacement (thinking displacement equals distance after running a lap), using algebraic addition for vectors (e.g., 3 N east + 4 N north = 7 N -- incorrect; the correct answer is 5 N at approximately 37° north of east), forgetting to resolve vectors into components (trying to process angled vectors directly), and ignoring directional information by treating vectors as scalars in calculations. Another frequent pitfall is mixing up sin and cos when resolving vectors -- remember: use cos when the angle lies between the vector and the component you want, and sin when it lies between the vector and the perpendicular direction. Extensive practice and consistent use of vector diagrams are the best defences against these errors.
IB Physics Paper 1 multiple-choice questions on vectors typically test conceptual understanding -- determining resultant directions from vector operations, classifying scalars versus vectors, and interpreting the geometric meaning of dot and cross products. Paper 2 structured questions demand complete working, including vector diagrams, component resolution, vector operations, and clear presentation of results. An effective exam strategy: always begin by sketching a vector diagram -- even when the question does not explicitly require one, a clear diagram helps you avoid directional errors. For problems involving inclined planes or projectiles, establish a coordinate system immediately and resolve all relevant vectors. When answering "explain" questions, explicitly use the terms "vector" and "scalar" to demonstrate command of the concepts.
