Procrastination is rarely a shortage of time; it is the friction at the moment a task begins. A meta-analysis of 691 correlations by Steel, published in Psychological Bulletin in 2007, ranked task aversiveness, task delay, low self-efficacy and impulsiveness as the strongest predictors, and put chronic procrastination at roughly 15 to 20 per cent of adults, with more than nine in ten saying they want to stop. The routines below run from starting a task to closing out a week, and each one carries the detail students usually get wrong.
Task aversiveness and temporal discounting
Two mechanisms sit behind most procrastination: the task itself feels unpleasant, and the reward arrives too late to matter. Steel's temporal motivation theory folds both into one expression, in which motivation rises with expectancy and value but falls as delay grows, so a task whose payoff is months away keeps losing to a phone that pays out instantly. Relabelling the problem as a deficit of willpower hides the useful lever, which is shrinking the delay and the unpleasantness at the very start; if you cannot name the first physical action, the aversion will postpone the task for you.
Five-minute starts and if-then plans
Gollwitzer and Sheeran's 2006 meta-analysis of 94 independent tests with more than eight thousand participants found a medium-to-large effect on goal attainment, d of about 0.65, for plans written in if-then form. "If I sit down at half past seven, then I do three integration questions" beats "I must revise maths tonight", because the first sentence hands control to a cue while the second stays a wish. The five-minute rule is the same trick stripped down, asking only for a start that may be abandoned after five minutes, which in practice rarely happens; vague conditions such as "when I have time" never fire at all.
Why the Pomodoro block is 25 minutes
The Pomodoro Technique was assembled by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s around a tomato-shaped kitchen timer, with 25 minutes of focus and a five-minute break forming one round, and a longer 15 to 30 minute break after four rounds. Twenty-five is not a law of attention; it simply marks a boundary short enough to avoid resistance and visible enough to keep effort up, and the part students get wrong is the break, which goes to a phone and swallows fifteen minutes instead of five. A round is judged by the effort put in rather than by the chapter finished, which is why abandoning the method after one incomplete chapter is a misreading of the tool.
Breaking a paper into 25-minute pieces
Task granularity is the most underrated cause of delay, because "revise biology" gives the brain nothing to compute while "write twelve cards on membrane transport" names a first move. A workable rule is that each piece must fit inside 25 minutes and leave you able to say plainly that the piece is finished, which turns a 90-minute paper into six blocks: fifteen minutes of multiple choice, two 25-minute blocks of structured questions, twenty minutes marking against the mark scheme, and ten minutes entering the errors into a log. Planning has to stop there, since an hour spent drawing a beautiful timetable is procrastination wearing a uniform.
Spacing the review: one day, one week, one month
Forgetting is not a steady decay: Ebbinghaus mapped the first forgetting curve with nonsense syllables in 1885 and found the sharpest losses in the hours right after learning. A meta-analysis by Cepeda and colleagues in Psychological Bulletin in 2006, covering 317 experiments and 839 assessments, concluded that the gap between two study episodes should scale with how long the material has to last, so a longer retention interval calls for a wider spacing. For A-Level and GCSE revision that suggests the same evening, three days later, a fortnight later and a month before the exam, twenty to thirty minutes each time and always by recall rather than re-reading.
Retrieval practice beats re-reading
Re-reading a chapter produces a feeling of progress that does not survive contact with an exam paper. In a 2006 Psychological Science study, Roediger and Karpicke had students either restudy a passage or take three free-recall tests; a week later the tested group remembered 56 per cent against 42 per cent, and at two days the gap was 68 against 54, yet on an immediate test the re-reading group led by 81 to 75. The practical version is to close the book and write the three processes from memory before checking, because copying from the answers is transcription rather than recall and it collapses in the exam hall.
Designing the room, not the willpower
Willpower runs down over a day, so fighting a phone with it is a losing trade, while changing the room costs nothing. JCQ exam rules ban watches, phones, earphones and any web-enabled device from the exam room, which says something about how much the setting decides: where no handset exists, focus needs no discipline. Moving the phone to another room and charging it there beats turning it face down, and a screen-time limit during study blocks hands enforcement to the system instead of to mood.
13:30 / Aligning with the JCQ timetable
Revision planning has to line up with the real timetable. Under the JCQ common timetable for summer 2026 every paper is published to start at either 9.00am or 1.30pm, written exams run from 7 May to 17 June 2026, and 24 June 2026 is held as a contingency day, so candidates stay contactable until then; subject and paper details sit in the AQA, OCR and Edexcel timetables, and the boards' own sites govern entries. Two weeks before the first paper, shift the daily rhythm onto those two slots with a real paper at 9.00am and another at 1.30pm, since a body clock takes one to two weeks to move and a last-minute switch leaves you sleepier in the exam hall.
A weekly 30-minute review
Half an hour once a week goes on three moves: ticking off what genuinely got done, writing down where the three unfinished items stalled, and scheduling three timed blocks for the coming week. Without that accounting a to-do list turns into a debt statement you start avoiding. Zeigarnik's classic 1927 experiments showed that interrupted, unfinished tasks stay in memory more stubbornly than completed ones, which is why filing an item away with a new date gives the brain permission to drop it, whereas a review spent berating yourself usually ends the habit by week two.
