Research Question?
而Research Question(研究问题,简称RQ)就是这篇论文的心脏。
The Extended Essay is a 4,000-word independent research paper required for the IB Diploma. At its heart lies the Research Question -- a focused, analytical query that drives your entire investigation. A well-crafted RQ makes every subsequent stage -- research design, source evaluation, data analysis, and argumentation -- significantly easier. Examiners consistently report that RQ quality is the single strongest predictor of EE success. A vague or overambitious RQ leads to superficial analysis and disappointing scores even when the student has worked hard. The RQ is not just the first step; it is the foundation upon which the entire essay is built.
第一条:Focused(聚焦性)。 To what extent did World War II affect Europe?" 第二条:Arguable(可论证性)。 What is photosynthesis?" 第三条:Researchable(可研究性)。
First, a strong RQ must be Focused. "To what extent did World War II affect Europe?" is far too broad. Narrow it to a specific country, time period, and event. "To what extent did the Marshall Plan contribute to West Germany's economic recovery between 1948 and 1955?" is focused and answerable within the word limit. Second, it must be Arguable -- not descriptive and not having an obvious answer. "What is photosynthesis?" leads to a textbook summary. "To what extent does light wavelength affect the rate of photosynthesis in Elodea canadensis?" invites genuine investigation and critical evaluation. Third, it must be Researchable within real-world constraints. Always verify source availability and methodological feasibility before committing to your final RQ. A brilliant RQ that requires inaccessible archives or prohibited materials is worthless in practice.
例如:生物学→植物生物学→光合作用→光波长影响→"To what extent does light wavelength affect photosynthesis rate in Spinacia oleracea?"
Step 1 -- Brain Dump: write everything you find interesting in your subject area without filtering. Step 2 -- Identify Variables: for sciences, define independent, dependent, and control variables. For humanities, define time period, geographic scope, theoretical lens, and source types. Step 3 -- Apply the Funnel: start wide (subject area), narrow to a topic, then to a sub-topic, and finally to a debatable RQ. A typical sequence: Biology → Plant Biology → Photosynthesis → Light Wavelength Effect → "To what extent does light wavelength (400-700 nm) affect the rate of photosynthesis in Spinacia oleracea, measured by oxygen production?" Step 4 -- Stress Test: can I answer this in 4,000 words? Are sources and equipment accessible? Is there genuine academic debate? If any answer is "no," return to Step 3 and adjust. Repeating this cycle before the first supervisor meeting is far more productive than presenting an undercooked RQ.
第二,指令词:IB偏爱"to what extent",其他如"evaluate"、"analyse"、"compare and contrast"也同样适用。
A complete RQ contains four essential components. Subject-specific terminology: your RQ should immediately signal the discipline -- Economics uses "opportunity cost" and "elasticity," Chemistry uses "rate of reaction," Literature uses "narrative perspective" and "imagery." This demonstrates that you understand disciplinary conventions. Command term: "to what extent" is the most versatile, while "evaluate," "analyse," and "compare and contrast" each have their place. Choose deliberately -- an "evaluate" RQ demands judgment, while an "analyse" RQ demands breaking down relationships. Scope delimiter: explicitly state boundaries -- time period, location, population, concentration range. These guardrails keep your essay from becoming a dissertation. Measurable outcome: what will you actually quantify or argue? For sciences, this is the dependent variable and measurement method. For humanities, it is the criteria by which you evaluate evidence. If you cannot articulate the outcome in one sentence, your RQ needs work.
Group 1 (Language & Literature): RQs explore literary techniques and thematic development, specifying which texts and features. Group 2 (Language Acquisition): RQs examine cultural dimensions through authentic target-language materials. Group 3 (Individuals & Societies): The most RQ-diverse group. Economics RQs use "to what extent" with theory and data. History RQs must show historiographical awareness -- not just "what happened" but "how have historians interpreted this?" Psychology RQs must operationalise constructs and follow ethical guidelines. Group 4 (Sciences): RQs must be experimentally testable with clearly defined variables. A Group 4 RQ that sounds like a Group 3 RQ is a red flag. Group 5 (Mathematics): RQs explore models, proofs, or applications with precise mathematical language. Group 6 (Arts): RQs investigate creative processes, artistic influences, or theory-practice relationships. The common thread: each discipline produces knowledge differently, and your RQ should reflect that epistemological awareness.
What caused the French Revolution?":4000字无法公平对待这个命题。 What is the pH of the river behind my school on Tuesday?":产生不了分析深度。 What are the key features of Picasso's Cubist period?":本质上是百科词条。 How does temperature affect enzymes?"(不指定酶种类、温度范围、测量方法)。强RQ是"To what extent does temperature (20-60 degree Celsius) affect catalase activity from Solanum tuberosum, measured by oxygen production?"
Error 1 -- Too Broad: "What caused the French Revolution?" is a doctoral question. Fix: narrow to a specific causal factor and timeframe. Error 2 -- Too Narrow: A single pH reading yields no analytical depth. Fix: add comparative or investigative dimensions. Error 3 -- Descriptive, Not Analytical: Textbook-summary questions earn low marks. Fix: reframe to require argumentation. Consider the Biology example. Weak: "How does temperature affect enzymes?" -- no enzyme specified, no range, no measurement method. Strong: "To what extent does temperature (20-60 degree Celsius) affect catalase activity from Solanum tuberosum, measured by oxygen production in hydrogen peroxide decomposition?" The strong RQ specifies enzyme, source, variable range, and measurement metric. This pattern holds across all subjects: strong RQs add scope delimiters, specify methodology, and demand analysis over description.
Use this checklist before committing. (1) Source Accessibility: Can I access at least 8-12 quality sources -- journal articles, monographs, primary documents -- relevant to my RQ? (2) Methodological Feasibility: Is my method realistically executable with available equipment and time? (3) Analytical Potential: Does my RQ invite genuine analysis, or only description? (4) Originality Check: Has this exact RQ been addressed extensively, and do I have a genuinely novel angle? (5) The 30-Second Test: Can I explain my RQ to a non-specialist in 30 seconds without rambling? (6) Personal Engagement: Does this RQ genuinely interest me, or am I choosing it out of convenience? (7) Supervisor Endorsement: Would my teacher approve? Schedule an informal conversation early -- a November rejection saves you from a February catastrophe.
Strategy 1 -- Bring Options, Not Just One Idea: Present 2-3 potential RQs to your supervisor. This demonstrates genuine preliminary thinking and allows comparison-based guidance. Strategy 2 -- Use the RQ Proposal Form: Prepare a one-page document covering proposed RQ, subject area, rationale, preliminary source list, and methodology outline. This transforms vague conversations into focused feedback sessions. Strategy 3 -- Ask Specific Questions: Instead of "Is my RQ good?", ask "Is my scope appropriate for 4,000 words?" or "What is the most common pitfall for EEs on this topic?" Specific questions yield actionable answers. Remember: supervisors provide annotated feedback on only one complete draft. The RQ-stage meetings are your best opportunity to front-load their expertise before committing significant writing time.
Month 1 -- Exploration: read broadly, identify 3-5 potential research directions. Month 2 -- RQ Drafting: narrow to 2-3 candidates, complete preliminary source checks, submit RQ proposal to supervisor. Month 3 -- Finalization: incorporate supervisor feedback, conduct focused reading to confirm feasibility, lock in the final RQ. Aim for an 80% solid RQ by the end of Month 2, then refine through the research process. High-scoring EE RQs share five consistent traits. Academic significance: the question addresses a genuine gap or debate in existing scholarship. Analytical tension: the answer is not obvious before research -- there is space for genuine argumentation. Methodological clarity: the RQ signals how it will be answered, whether through experiment, textual analysis, or historical evaluation. Personal engagement: the RQ reflects authentic intellectual curiosity, not convenience. Disciplinary authenticity: a History RQ reads like a question a historian would ask; a Biology RQ mirrors published scientific research. This is the fundamental purpose of the EE: learning how knowledge is produced within an academic discipline.
Q: Can my RQ change during the writing process? Yes, and this is normal. IB encourages discussing RQ evolution in Reflection Sessions -- it is excellent material for high Reflection marks. Document why the change occurred: did initial sources not support the hypothesis? Did deeper reading reveal a more compelling angle? Q: Must my RQ be phrased as a question? IB requires the EE to be framed around a research question, though Mathematics and Computer Science may use aims or hypotheses alongside the RQ. Consult your subject-specific EE guide. Q: What if my Group 4 experiment fails? This is common and not automatically penalised. Document what went wrong in detail, analyse causes scientifically, and discuss improvements. Scientific honesty and critical reflection on limitations often score higher than a straightforward success narrative. Q: Should my RQ reference specific scholars or theories? It depends on the subject. History and Philosophy benefit from historiographical or theoretical framing. Sciences benefit from referencing specific models. Literature benefits from naming a critical lens. But avoid name-dropping -- the RQ should stand on its analytical merit.
