The IB Diploma Programme core consists of three pillars: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). Together, these three core components contribute up to 3 bonus points, which are added to the maximum 42 points from the six subject groups to make up the IB diploma total of 45 points. The core is the essence of the IB educational philosophy -- it goes beyond traditional subject knowledge and aims to cultivate critical thinking, independent research skills, and social responsibility in students. While 3 points may seem modest, they often make the critical difference between receiving and not receiving the diploma.
The Extended Essay is an independent research paper of up to 4,000 words, requiring students to choose a subject area of interest, formulate a research question, and conduct in-depth academic investigation. This is the first exposure to university-level research writing for most IB students. The process includes topic selection, literature review, research methodology design, data collection and analysis, argument development, and final writing. Students maintain regular communication with an assigned supervisor -- at least three formal meetings are recommended -- who provides guidance and feedback, but the final essay must be the student's own original work. IB emphasises academic integrity, and all EE submissions must pass Turnitin plagiarism checks.
(Reflections on Planning and Progress Form, RPPF)来评估学生在研究过程中的成长。
The EE is assessed against five criteria, totaling 34 marks, which are then converted into grades A through E. Grade A (27-34 marks) represents excellent research quality, B (21-26) is good, C (14-20) is satisfactory, D (7-13) is basic, and E (0-6) is failing. The five criteria are: Focus and Method (6 marks), assessing the clarity of the research question and the appropriateness of methodology; Knowledge and Understanding (6 marks), examining subject knowledge and its application; Critical Thinking (12 marks), the most heavily weighted criterion, evaluating the student's ability to analyse, discuss, and assess source materials; Presentation (4 marks), covering academic conventions, citation formatting, and structural clarity; and Engagement (6 marks), assessed via the Reflections on Planning and Progress Form (RPPF) to evaluate the student's growth throughout the research process.
四、Theory of Knowledge(TOK):知识论探索
The TOK course explores a fundamental question: how do we know what we know? It guides students to reflect on the nature, sources, and limitations of knowledge. The course is structured around the Knowledge Framework, covering scope, perspectives, methods and tools, and ethics. Students study the core theme of Knowledge and the Knower, along with five optional themes such as knowledge and technology, knowledge and language, and knowledge and politics. TOK encourages students to question assumptions and examine how knowledge is constructed across different Areas of Knowledge -- including the natural sciences, human sciences, history, the arts, and mathematics. TOK is not a course about what knowledge is, but about how knowledge is constructed and validated.
TOK assessment consists of two components: the TOK Exhibition (1/3 weighting, internally assessed) and the TOK Essay (2/3 weighting, externally assessed). The Exhibition requires students to choose one IA Prompt from 35 options and use three everyday objects to demonstrate TOK concepts in daily life, accompanied by a 950-word commentary. Each object commentary must clearly explain how the object relates to the chosen IA Prompt and demonstrate TOK thinking. The TOK Essay requires a 1600-word analytical argument on one of six Prescribed Titles released by the IBO. The essay must present clear Knowledge Claims and demonstrate critical thinking through Counterclaims. The TOK and EE grade combination determines the core bonus points: AA earns 3 points, AB or BA earns 2, BB earns 1, and any combination including an E earns 0 bonus points.
CAS is the only core component not assessed through written academic work. It requires students to engage continuously in creative activities, physical activity, and community service throughout the one to two years of the IB Diploma Programme, including a CAS Project lasting at least one month that demonstrates teamwork and planning skills. CAS is not graded, but students must achieve seven Learning Outcomes: identifying personal strengths and areas for growth, undertaking challenges and developing new skills, planning and initiating CAS experiences, demonstrating perseverance and commitment, collaborative skills, global engagement, and ethical considerations in action. The philosophy of CAS is Learning by Doing, emphasising continuity of process over quantifiable outcomes.
Although CAS is not graded in the traditional sense, the assessment is still rigorous and evidence-based. Students must continuously document their CAS experiences through platforms like ManageBac, including goal-setting, activity descriptions, and reflective writing. Reflection is the core of CAS assessment -- students must demonstrate how they learn from experiences and how these connect to the Learning Outcomes. Coordinators periodically review CAS portfolios, conduct three formal interviews (initial, mid-point, and final), and make a pass or fail determination in the final report. Students must also provide activity evidence -- photos, videos, certificates, supervisor comments -- to verify the authenticity of their participation. Students who fail to complete CAS cannot receive the IB diploma regardless of their performance in other subjects -- this hard requirement leads some students to scramble for last-minute CAS activities every year.
The 3 points from the IB core may seem modest, but in practice they are crucial. Students need at least 24 points to earn the IB diploma, with at least 12 points from Higher Level subjects. For a student scoring only 23 points across the six subject groups, 1-2 bonus points from the core can make the difference between passing and failing. Additionally, the IB diploma has several hard requirements: all six subject groups must have a grade (no N), TOK and EE must not receive an E grade, CAS must be completed, and there must be no academic misconduct record. The IBO also adjusts grade boundaries annually based on global performance, meaning the same paper could receive different grades in different years. Every core point therefore deserves serious attention, especially when subject totals are near the threshold.
Many students underestimate the time commitment required by the core. The EE typically demands over 40 hours of independent research, the TOK Exhibition and Essay require sustained critical thinking training, and CAS involves at least 2-3 hours of weekly activities over two years. Common misconceptions include writing the EE like an extended subject essay without critical analysis, making claims without argumentation in the TOK Essay, engaging in CAS activities that lack continuity or reflective depth, and procrastinating all three core tasks until the second year of the DP. High-scoring strategies include settling on an EE topic early and making full use of supervisor feedback, building a cross-domain knowledge question bank for TOK, choosing genuinely interesting CAS areas to maintain long-term motivation, integrating TOK thinking into all subject studies, and creating a clear timeline that distributes the EE's three phases -- topic selection, research, and writing -- sensibly across the first and second years of the DP.
