What is an Ecosystem?
An ecosystem is a dynamic system made up of a community of living organisms (the biotic component) interacting with their non-living surroundings (the abiotic component). In OCR Biology Module 6, ecosystems form the backbone of ecology — from a tropical rainforest to a freshwater pond, each ecosystem exhibits unique patterns of energy flow and nutrient cycling. The key insight is that while energy flows through an ecosystem in one direction, matter is continuously recycled.
OCR考纲要求考生能够定义以下关键术语:habitat(栖息地)是生物生存的地方;population(种群)是同一物种在同一区域的所有个体;community(群落)是不同种群在同一区域的集合;而ecosystem(生态系统)则是群落与非生物因素的完整互动系统。
Energy Flow and Food Chains
Energy enters most ecosystems as sunlight, which is captured by producers (plants and algae) through photosynthesis. This chemical energy is then passed along food chains: producers → primary consumers (herbivores) → secondary consumers (carnivores) → tertiary consumers. A food web is a more realistic representation, showing the complex network of interconnected food chains within an ecosystem.
Energy transfer efficiency can be calculated using the formula: Efficiency (%) = (Energy available after transfer ÷ Energy available before transfer) × 100 For example, if producers capture 50,000 kJ m⁻² yr⁻¹ and primary consumers assimilate 5,000 kJ m⁻² yr⁻¹, the efficiency is (5,000 / 50,000) × 100 = 10%. The low efficiency explains why ecosystems can only support a limited number of trophic levels — there simply isn't enough energy at the top.
Ecological Pyramids
Ecological pyramids are graphical representations of the structure of ecosystems. The pyramid of numbers shows organism counts per trophic level — but can be misleading when organisms differ greatly in size (e.g., one oak tree ↔ thousands of caterpillars). The pyramid of biomass uses dry mass and is generally pyramid-shaped, but in aquatic ecosystems where phytoplankton reproduce rapidly, an inverted pyramid can occur at a snapshot in time. The pyramid of energy is always upright because energy is always lost as heat between trophic levels — this is a direct consequence of the Second Law of Thermodynamics and a guaranteed exam point.
Nutrient Cycles
These microbial processes are a major focus in OCR exams. Students must know the specific bacteria involved and the conditions they require:
Nitrogen fixation: N₂ → NH₃/NH₄⁺ — carried out by free-living soil bacteria (Azotobacter) and mutualistic bacteria (Rhizobium) in root nodules of legumes.
Nitrification: NH₄⁺ → NO₂⁻ → NO₃⁻ — an oxidation process by nitrifying bacteria (Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter), requiring well-aerated, aerobic soils.
Denitrification: NO₃⁻ → N₂ — by denitrifying bacteria in anaerobic, waterlogged soils.
Ammonification: organic N → NH₄⁺ — by saprobionts during decomposition.
5. 演替 Succession
Succession describes the directional change in species composition over time. Primary succession starts from bare rock with no soil — pioneer species like lichens colonise first, breaking down rock to form thin soil. As soil depth and organic matter increase, grasses, shrubs, and eventually trees establish, leading to a climax community. Key exam vocabulary: sere (a stage in succession), deflected succession (when human activities like grazing or mowing prevent the climax community from forming), and the general trend of increasing biodiversity, biomass, and soil depth as succession proceeds.
Measuring Biodiversity and Population Size
Measuring biodiversity is a practical skill assessed in Paper 3. Students must be able to design sampling protocols, justify method choices, and evaluate limitations. For plants, quadrats with percentage cover estimates (using the ACFOR scale) are standard. For motile animals, mark-release-recapture is used, but only when the assumptions are reasonably met — exam questions often ask you to identify which assumption has been violated in a given scenario.
Human Impact on Ecosystems
The exam often presents data-based questions on human impacts — interpreting graphs of deforestation rates, analysing the consequences of fertiliser run-off, or evaluating the effectiveness of conservation measures. Key terms to know: bioaccumulation (build-up of toxins in an organism), biomagnification (increasing concentration of toxins up the food chain), and eutrophication (the sequence from nutrient enrichment → algal bloom → oxygen depletion → death of aerobic organisms).
Exam Tips
Finally, always link back to the big picture. Ecosystem questions often ask you to explain how a change in one part of the system affects the whole. Train yourself to trace effects through trophic levels and nutrient cycles. Remember: energy flows, matter cycles, and every organism has a role to play. Understanding these principles isn't just for the exam — it's the foundation for tackling real-world environmental challenges.
