AQA A-Level Chemistry Bonding Ultimate Guide
Chemical bonding is the foundation of A-Level AQA Chemistry. This bilingual guide covers every bonding topic in the AQA specification: ionic, covalent, metallic bonding and intermolecular forces.
Ionic Bonding 离子键
Ionic bonding is electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions. Metals lose electrons to form cations (Na to Na+), non-metals gain electrons to form anions (Cl to Cl-). Ionic compounds form giant ionic lattices with strong forces in all directions.
Key properties: High melting points because overcoming strong forces requires large energy (MgO higher than NaCl due to greater ionic charge). Conduct electricity only when molten or aqueous, as ions must be free to move. Brittle because shifting layers cause like-charged ions to repel.
Covalent Bonding 共价键
A covalent bond is electrostatic attraction between a shared electron pair and two positive nuclei. Types: single (one pair, H-H), double (two pairs, O=O), triple (three pairs). Dative bonds occur when both electrons come from the same atom — key AQA examples: NH4+, H3O+, Al2Cl6, CO.
Giant covalent structures: Diamond (4 bonds/C, tetrahedral, non-conductive, hard). Graphite (3 bonds/C, layered, conducts via delocalised electrons, soft). Graphene (single atom-thick, strongest material, excellent conductor). SiO2 (tetrahedral network, high MP, non-conductive).
Electronegativity and Polarity
Electronegativity is the ability to attract shared electrons. Fluorine is highest (4.0). It increases across a period, decreases down a group. Different electronegativities create polar bonds with permanent dipoles. A molecule can be non-polar if symmetry cancels dipoles: CO2 is non-polar (linear), H2O is polar (bent), CCl4 is non-polar (tetrahedral), CHCl3 is polar.
VSEPR Theory
Electron pairs repel and maximise separation. Repulsion: lone pair-lone pair > lone pair-bonding pair > bonding pair-bonding pair. This explains NH3 (107 degrees) and H2O (104.5 degrees) being less than the tetrahedral ideal (109.5 degrees).
AQA shapes: Linear (2BP, 180 degrees, BeCl2/CO2), Trigonal Planar (3BP, 120 degrees, BF3), Tetrahedral (4BP, 109.5 degrees, CH4), Trigonal Pyramidal (3BP+1LP, 107 degrees, NH3), Bent (2BP+2LP, 104.5 degrees, H2O), Octahedral (6BP, 90 degrees, SF6). Exam: state BP/LP count, name shape, give angle, explain deviation.
Metallic Bonding 金属键
Metallic bonding is attraction between positive metal ions and a sea of delocalised electrons. Metals conduct electricity in solid state because electrons move freely. They are malleable and ductile because ion layers slide without breaking bonds. Mg melts higher than Na because Mg2+ contributes 2 delocalised electrons versus 1 from Na+, producing stronger attraction.
Intermolecular Forces
Three types by increasing strength: London dispersion forces (all molecules, temporary dipoles, stronger with more electrons and contact area), permanent dipole-dipole (polar molecules), hydrogen bonding (strongest, when H is bonded to N/O/F and attracted to a lone pair on N/O/F of a neighbour).
London forces explain why straight-chain alkanes boil higher than branched isomers. Hydrogen bonding explains water's high boiling point, why ice floats, higher BP of alcohols versus alkanes, and DNA base pairing (A-T, C-G).
Bond Enthalpy 键焓
Bond enthalpy is the energy to break one mole of covalent bonds in gaseous state. Bond breaking is endothermic; bond making is exothermic. Delta H equals sum of bonds broken minus sum of bonds formed. Strength: triple > double > single. A double bond is not twice as strong as a single bond because the pi bond is weaker than the sigma bond.
Revision Strategy
Master AQA bonding by practising: dot-and-cross diagrams, VSEPR shape prediction, comparing physical properties across structure types, identifying intermolecular forces, ranking boiling points, calculating delta H from bond enthalpies, and explaining water's anomalies via hydrogen bonding. Bonding underpins organic mechanisms and transition metal chemistry, making this a high-leverage topic for your grade.
