Energy Stores and Systems
In IGCSE CAIE Physics, energy is one of the most fundamental and high-weight topics. Understanding the different ways energy can be stored and transferred is essential for success in Paper 2, Paper 4, and Paper 6.
The syllabus identifies eight distinct energy stores. Kinetic energy is the energy possessed by any moving object — a car travelling at speed, a thrown ball, or electrons flowing in a circuit. Gravitational potential energy (GPE) is stored when an object is raised above the ground in a gravitational field. The higher the object and the greater its mass, the more GPE it stores. Elastic potential energy is stored in stretched or compressed objects such as springs, rubber bands, and bungee cords. Thermal (internal) energy relates to the kinetic and potential energy of particles within a substance — the hotter the object, the greater its internal energy.
Chemical energy is stored in the bonds of chemical compounds — fuel, food, and batteries all store chemical energy. Nuclear energy is stored in the nucleus of an atom and can be released through nuclear fission or fusion. Magnetic energy is stored when magnets attract or repel each other, and electrostatic energy is stored when electric charges are separated.
A system in physics is simply a defined region or set of objects under consideration. When a system changes, energy is transferred between stores. For example, when a ball falls, energy is transferred from its gravitational potential store to its kinetic store. Understanding systems and energy transfers forms the foundation of almost every calculation question in the Energy topic.
Work Done and Energy Transfer
Work done is one of the most important concepts linking force and energy. When a force moves an object through a distance, work is done on that object, and energy is transferred. The defining equation is W = F × d, where W is work done in joules (J), F is force in newtons (N), and d is distance moved in the direction of the force in metres (m). One joule of work is done when a force of one newton moves an object through one metre.
A common exam pitfall is forgetting that the distance d must be in the direction of the force. If you push a box horizontally across the floor, the distance used in the calculation is the horizontal distance, not the total path length if the box goes around corners. Similarly, when lifting an object vertically, the work done against gravity equals the weight (mg) multiplied by the vertical height gained.
Energy transfer can occur through four main pathways. Mechanical working involves a force moving an object — this is directly linked to the work done equation. Electrical working occurs when charges move through a potential difference, transferring energy from a power source to components in a circuit. Heating occurs when energy is transferred from a hotter object to a cooler one due to a temperature difference. Radiation involves energy transfer through electromagnetic waves, such as light from the Sun reaching Earth or infrared radiation emitted by warm objects.
Kinetic Energy and Gravitational Potential Energy
The kinetic energy of a moving object is given by KE = 1/2 × m × v², where m is mass in kilograms and v is velocity in metres per second. Notice that KE depends on the square of velocity — doubling the speed quadruples the kinetic energy. This explains why high-speed collisions are so much more destructive than low-speed ones. Always convert mass to kg and velocity to m/s before substituting into the formula.
Gravitational potential energy is calculated using GPE = m × g × h, where m is mass in kg, g is gravitational field strength (9.8 N/kg on Earth, though the exam often uses 10 N/kg for simplicity), and h is height in metres. Remember that h is the change in vertical height, not the distance travelled along a slope. If a cyclist rides up a hill along a winding path, h is the vertical rise, not the length of the road.
A classic exam scenario is the pendulum or roller-coaster problem. At the highest point, the object has maximum GPE and minimum KE. At the lowest point, GPE is at a minimum and KE is at a maximum. Assuming no energy is lost to friction or air resistance, the total mechanical energy (KE + GPE) remains constant. You can equate the loss in GPE to the gain in KE to find the velocity at any point.
Specific Heat Capacity 比热容
Specific heat capacity (c) is the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1 kg of a substance by 1 degree Celsius. The equation is ΔE = m × c × Δθ, where ΔE is the change in thermal energy in joules, m is mass in kg, c is specific heat capacity in J/(kg·°C), and Δθ is the temperature change in °C. Water has a remarkably high specific heat capacity of 4200 J/(kg·°C), which is why it is used in central heating systems and why coastal areas have milder climates than inland regions.
In practical experiments, you will measure specific heat capacity using a joulemeter or by calculating electrical energy supplied (E = V × I × t). Common sources of error include heat loss to the surroundings, incomplete insulation, and not stirring the liquid sufficiently. Always insulate the container, use a lid, and stir continuously for the most accurate results. The specific heat capacity practical is a core required practical in the CAIE syllabus and frequently appears in Paper 6 alternative-to-practical questions.
Power and Efficiency
Power is defined as the rate at which energy is transferred or the rate at which work is done. The two equivalent equations are P = E / t and P = W / t, where P is power in watts (W), E is energy transferred in joules, W is work done in joules, and t is time in seconds. One watt is equal to one joule per second. A 60 W light bulb transfers 60 J of electrical energy into light and thermal energy every second.
Efficiency measures how much of the input energy is converted into useful output energy. Efficiency = (useful energy output / total energy input) × 100%. No device can be more than 100% efficient due to the principle of conservation of energy. In practice, all real devices have efficiency below 100% because some energy is always dissipated as thermal energy to the surroundings — this is why machines get warm when operating. You can express efficiency as a decimal (0 to 1) or as a percentage (0% to 100%). Both forms appear in exam questions.
Sankey diagrams are a visual way to represent energy transfers and efficiency. The width of each arrow is proportional to the amount of energy it represents. The input arrow has the full width; the useful output arrow is narrower; and the wasted energy arrows branch off. The thicker the wasted energy arrows, the lower the efficiency. You may be asked to draw or interpret Sankey diagrams in the exam — remember that the total width of all output arrows must equal the width of the input arrow, reflecting energy conservation.
Energy Resources
Energy resources can be broadly classified as renewable or non-renewable. Non-renewable resources include fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas) and nuclear fuels (uranium and plutonium). These resources are finite and will eventually run out. Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide, contributing to the greenhouse effect and climate change, as well as sulfur dioxide, which causes acid rain. Nuclear power does not produce greenhouse gases during operation but generates radioactive waste that must be safely stored for thousands of years.
Renewable energy resources are those that can be replenished at a rate comparable to or faster than the rate of consumption. Solar energy uses photovoltaic cells to convert sunlight directly into electricity or solar thermal collectors to heat water. Wind energy harnesses the kinetic energy of moving air to turn turbines. Hydroelectric power uses the GPE of water stored behind dams — water flows down through turbines, converting GPE into electrical energy. Tidal power exploits the regular rise and fall of sea levels, while wave power captures energy from the motion of waves on the ocean surface. Geothermal energy taps into the thermal energy stored beneath the Earth crust, using steam or hot water to drive turbines.
Each energy resource has advantages and disadvantages. Fossil fuel power stations are reliable and can generate large amounts of electricity on demand, but they produce pollution and contribute to climate change. Renewable sources are generally cleaner but can be intermittent — solar panels do not work at night, wind turbines need wind, and wave power varies with weather conditions. Exam questions frequently ask you to evaluate the suitability of different energy resources for specific situations, considering factors such as cost, reliability, environmental impact, and the local geography.
Conservation of Energy and Dissipation
The principle of conservation of energy is one of the most important laws in physics: energy can be transferred usefully, stored, or dissipated, but it can never be created or destroyed. This principle underpins every energy calculation in the IGCSE syllabus. When solving problems, always start by identifying the energy stores at the beginning and end of the process, then equate the total initial energy to the total final energy, accounting for any energy dissipated to the surroundings.
Energy dissipation refers to energy that spreads out into the surroundings and becomes less useful — typically as thermal energy. In any real process, some energy is always dissipated. For instance, when a car brakes, the kinetic energy is not destroyed; it is transferred to thermal energy in the brake pads and tyres, warming them up. This dissipated energy is no longer available to do useful work. The concept of dissipation explains why perpetual motion machines are impossible — you cannot get more useful energy out of a system than you put in, and in practice you always get less.
In exam questions, you may be asked to explain what happens to the "lost" energy. The correct answer is always that the energy has been transferred to the thermal energy store of the surroundings — it has been dissipated, not destroyed. A bouncing ball gradually loses height because with each bounce, some kinetic energy is converted to thermal energy in the ball and the floor, as well as sound energy. Eventually, all the initial GPE is dissipated, and the ball comes to rest.
Thermal Energy Transfer
Thermal energy can be transferred by three distinct mechanisms: conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction is the transfer of thermal energy through a solid (or between solids in contact) without the material itself moving. It occurs primarily through the vibration of particles — energetic particles vibrate and pass energy to neighbouring particles. Metals are excellent conductors because they contain free electrons that can rapidly transfer energy through the material. Non-metals, liquids, and gases are generally poor conductors (good insulators). This is why saucepan handles are often made of wood or plastic, and why double-glazed windows use an air gap for insulation.
Convection occurs in fluids (liquids and gases) and involves the bulk movement of the material itself. When a fluid is heated, it expands, becomes less dense, and rises. Cooler, denser fluid sinks to take its place, creating a convection current. This is how radiators heat a room — warm air rises from the radiator, circulates around the room, cools, and sinks back to be reheated. Convection also drives ocean currents and atmospheric weather patterns. A classic exam question is to explain why a sea breeze blows from the sea to the land during the day: land heats up faster than water, so air above the land rises and cooler air from the sea moves in to replace it.
Radiation is the transfer of thermal energy by electromagnetic waves, primarily in the infrared region. Unlike conduction and convection, radiation does not require a medium — it can travel through a vacuum, which is how the Sun energy reaches Earth. All objects emit and absorb infrared radiation. The rate of emission and absorption depends on the surface: dark, matt surfaces are the best emitters and absorbers of infrared radiation, while light, shiny surfaces are the worst emitters and absorbers (they are good reflectors). This is why solar panels are painted black, why you feel cooler wearing a white shirt on a sunny day, and why vacuum flasks have shiny silvered inner surfaces to minimise heat loss by radiation.
Many exam questions require you to compare and contrast conduction, convection, and radiation. Remember the key differences: conduction needs particles in contact (solids), convection needs a fluid that can flow, and radiation can travel through empty space. When designing insulation for a house — loft insulation traps air (poor conductor), cavity wall insulation stops convection currents, and reflective foil reduces radiation losses. Each method targets a different mode of thermal energy transfer.
Exam Tips and Common Pitfalls
First, always write down the relevant formula before substituting numbers. This earns you marks even if the arithmetic goes wrong. The CAIE mark scheme awards marks for correct formula selection and substitution, not just the final answer. Second, check your units meticulously — mass must be in kg, distance in m, time in s, and energy in J. A common error is using grams instead of kilograms, which gives an answer 1000 times too large or too small. Third, when a question involves energy conservation, clearly state that energy is conserved and set up the equation: energy lost from one store equals energy gained by another.
For the practical paper, be prepared to describe how to measure specific heat capacity or investigate the efficiency of energy transfers. Know how to reduce heat loss (insulation, lid, low starting temperature), how to measure electrical energy supplied (joulemeter or V × I × t), and how to calculate the energy gained by the substance. Always consider sources of error and suggest improvements — this is a standard 2-3 mark question that rewards structured thinking.
Finally, practise using the equations in combination. Many Paper 4 questions require you to link multiple equations — for example, using W = F × d to find work done, then P = W / t to find power, or using GPE lost = KE gained to find velocity. Build confidence by working through past paper questions systematically, and you will find that energy calculation problems follow predictable patterns.
