What is a Wave?
A wave is a way of transferring energy from one point to another without any net movement of matter. Imagine dropping a stone into a pond — ripples spread outward, but the water itself does not travel with the wave; it simply oscillates up and down in place. In GCSE Physics, waves are a core topic that appears in both Paper 1 and Paper 2, and they form the foundation for understanding acoustics, optics, and electromagnetism.
Transverse and Longitudinal Waves
Waves fall into two categories: transverse and longitudinal. In a transverse wave, the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer. Light, water waves, and all electromagnetic waves are transverse. Picture holding one end of a rope fixed and flicking the other end up and down — the wave travels along the rope, but each point on the rope moves up and down.
In a longitudinal wave, the oscillations are parallel to the direction of energy transfer. Sound waves are the classic example. As a sound wave travels through air, the air molecules vibrate back and forth, creating regions of compression and rarefaction. Think of a slinky spring being compressed and released — the compressed region travels along the spring, but each coil only moves back and forth in place.
Key Properties of Waves
To describe a wave, you need to master several key terms. Amplitude is the maximum displacement from the equilibrium position to a crest or trough — it determines the energy carried by the wave: the larger the amplitude, the more energy. Wavelength (λ) is the distance between two adjacent crests (or troughs), measured in metres (m). Frequency (f) is the number of complete waves passing a point per second, measured in hertz (Hz), where 1 Hz = 1 wave per second.
The period (T) is the time taken for one complete wave to pass a point, and it is the reciprocal of frequency: T = 1/f. Wave speed (v) is the speed at which the wave's energy travels, measured in metres per second (m/s).
The Wave Speed Equation
The wave speed equation is one of the most important formulas in GCSE Physics: v = f × λ, or wave speed = frequency × wavelength. This equation applies to all types of waves. You need to be able to rearrange it for any variable: find wave speed given frequency and wavelength, find wavelength given wave speed and frequency (λ = v/f), or find frequency given wave speed and wavelength (f = v/λ).
Example question: A water wave has a frequency of 5 Hz and a wavelength of 0.4 m. Calculate the wave speed.
Answer: v = f × λ = 5 × 0.4 = 2.0 m/s.
Another common exam-style question involves using an oscilloscope trace to calculate frequency and period. The time base setting tells you how many seconds each division represents; count the number of divisions for one complete cycle on the screen, and you can work out the period and frequency.
Reflection, Refraction and Diffraction
Waves exhibit three key behaviours when they encounter boundaries or obstacles: reflection, refraction, and diffraction. Reflection occurs when a wave hits a surface and bounces back. The angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection — a point that appears repeatedly in exams. Mirrors, echoes, and radar all make use of wave reflection.
Refraction occurs when a wave enters a different medium and changes speed. When a wave moves from a less dense to a more dense medium (e.g., light from air into glass), it slows down and bends towards the normal. Conversely, from dense to less dense, it speeds up and bends away from the normal. A crucial point to remember: refraction happens because the wave speed changes, but the frequency remains constant.
Diffraction is the spreading out of waves as they pass around an obstacle or through a gap. The narrower the gap (closer to the wavelength in size), the more pronounced the diffraction. This is why you can hear sounds from around a corner but cannot see the source — sound waves diffract significantly, while light waves have wavelengths too short for noticeable diffraction in everyday situations.
Sound Waves and Hearing
Sound waves are longitudinal and require a medium (solid, liquid, or gas) to travel — they cannot travel through a vacuum. Sound travels fastest in solids because the molecules are more tightly packed. Humans can hear sounds between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz. Sound waves with frequencies above 20,000 Hz are called ultrasound, and those below 20 Hz are infrasound.
Ultrasound has important applications in medical imaging and industrial testing. By emitting pulses of ultrasound and measuring the time taken for echoes to return, the depth of internal structures can be calculated. This is the principle behind fetal scanning and underwater sonar. Ultrasound can also be used in physiotherapy and to break up kidney stones.
Seismic Waves
Earthquakes produce two main types of waves: P-waves (longitudinal) and S-waves (transverse). P-waves travel faster and can pass through both solids and liquids; S-waves travel slower and can only pass through solids. By analysing the time difference between P-wave and S-wave arrivals at seismometers, scientists can infer the structure of the Earth's interior — in particular, the fact that S-waves cannot travel through the outer core provides key evidence that the Earth's outer core is liquid.
The Electromagnetic Spectrum
Electromagnetic waves are transverse and can travel through a vacuum (they do not need a medium). The speed of all electromagnetic waves in a vacuum is approximately 3.0 × 10⁸ m/s. The electromagnetic spectrum, arranged by wavelength from longest to shortest (or frequency from lowest to highest), is: radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays.
Each type of electromagnetic wave has its unique uses and potential hazards. Radio waves are used for communication and broadcasting; microwaves for satellite communication and cooking (microwave ovens heat water molecules in food); infrared for thermal imaging and remote controls; visible light is the only EM wave we can see; ultraviolet is used for sterilisation and detecting counterfeit banknotes, but overexposure damages skin; X-rays are used for medical imaging, but ionising radiation carries a cancer risk; gamma rays are used in cancer radiotherapy and industrial sterilisation.
A key trend frequently tested in exams: as frequency increases (wavelength decreases), the energy carried by the electromagnetic wave increases, and its ionising ability becomes stronger. This is why X-rays and gamma rays are far more hazardous than radio waves and visible light.
The Edexcel GCSE Physics specification requires you to know how to measure wave speed in water and in solids. For water waves (ripple tank practical): use a ripple tank to generate waves, use a strobe light to make the waves appear stationary, measure the total length of several wavelengths and divide by the number of waves to find the wavelength, then multiply by frequency for wave speed. For waves in a solid (waves on a string): attach one end of a string to a vibration generator, hang weights from the other end, adjust the frequency until clear standing waves form, measure the wavelength and multiply by frequency for wave speed.
In your practical write-up, you need to be able to identify sources of error (such as parallax error when measuring wavelength, limited precision of frequency readings) and suggest improvements (such as measuring more wavelengths and taking an average, using a more precise frequency counter).
Common Mistakes and Exam Tips
First, don't confuse the definitions of transverse and longitudinal waves. Exam questions frequently ask you to describe the difference and give examples — remember the key: is the oscillation perpendicular or parallel to the direction of energy transfer? Second, always use consistent units in the wave speed equation v=fλ: frequency in Hz, wavelength in m, wave speed in m/s. Third, during refraction, frequency stays constant while speed and wavelength change — this is a high-frequency exam point. Fourth, the order of the electromagnetic spectrum must be memorised; expect to sort types by frequency or wavelength. Fifth, in oscilloscope questions, first determine the time base (seconds per division), then count complete divisions between peaks.
Practise plenty of calculation questions and six-mark extended-response questions — wave questions often link multiple concepts together, such as "Describe how sound travels from a loudspeaker to your ear, explaining the wave processes involved." Answer these step by step with a logical flow.
