Electrolysis is the process of using direct current (DC) to break down an ionic compound into its constituent elements. In GCSE Edexcel Chemistry, electrolysis is a core topic in Paper 1, typically worth 10-15 marks. Understanding electrolysis is not just for the exam -- it underpins modern industrial processes like aluminium extraction, electroplating, and the chlor-alkali industry. The key principle: an external power source forces electrons to flow in a circuit, compelling the ions in the compound to undergo redox reactions that would not occur spontaneously.
The electrolysis apparatus has four key components: the electrolyte, which must be a liquid or solution containing freely mobile ions; two electrodes, usually made of inert graphite or platinum; the anode, connected to the positive terminal and attracting anions; and the cathode, connected to the negative terminal and attracting cations. In molten electrolysis, the electrolyte is the melted ionic compound. In aqueous electrolysis, the compound is dissolved in water, and water itself can participate in the reactions at both electrodes.
Take molten lead bromide (PbBr2) as an example -- the most common GCSE short-answer question type. When PbBr2 is heated to its molten state, Pb2+ ions migrate to the cathode, where they gain electrons and are reduced to lead metal: Pb2+ + 2e- → Pb (a grey metallic deposit). Br- ions migrate to the anode, where they lose electrons and are oxidised to bromine molecules: 2Br- → Br2 + 2e- (red-brown gas is released). Since only Pb2+ and Br- ions are present, product prediction is straightforward. Exam questions frequently ask you to draw the full electrolysis apparatus and label the products at each electrode.
Molten sodium chloride (NaCl) electrolysis produces sodium metal at the cathode and chlorine gas at the anode. Sodium deposits as a liquid because the operating temperature exceeds its melting point. Molten aluminium oxide (Al2O3) is used for industrial aluminium production, but pure Al2O3 melts at 2072 degrees Celsius. Industrially, cryolite (Na3AlF6) is added to lower the melting point to around 950 degrees, significantly reducing energy costs. In Edexcel exams, the role of cryolite is a high-frequency short-answer question -- you must remember both marking points: "lowers melting point" and "saves energy".
Aqueous electrolysis is significantly more complex than molten electrolysis because water contains H+ and OH- ions that compete with the solute ions for discharge. Product prediction follows these rules: at the cathode, if the metal is more reactive than hydrogen (potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, aluminium), H+ is preferentially discharged, producing hydrogen gas; if the metal is less reactive than hydrogen (copper, silver, gold), the metal ions are discharged instead. At the anode, if the solution contains halide ions (Cl-, Br-, I-) and is concentrated, the halogen is preferentially discharged; otherwise, OH- is discharged, producing oxygen gas. Copper sulfate (CuSO4) and sodium chloride (NaCl) solutions are the two most frequently tested aqueous systems in Edexcel exams.
Electrolysis of copper sulfate solution (CuSO4(aq)) using inert electrodes is the most classic GCSE practical question. At the cathode, Cu2+ ions are more easily reduced than H+, so copper metal deposits: Cu2+ + 2e- → Cu. The cathode gains mass and turns reddish-brown. At the anode, SO42- ions are difficult to discharge, so OH- ions are preferentially oxidised: 4OH- → O2 + 2H2O + 4e-, producing colourless, odourless oxygen gas. As electrolysis proceeds, the Cu2+ concentration in solution decreases and the blue colour fades. After the experiment, the mass gain of the cathode equals the mass of copper deposited, allowing quantitative calculations.
Electrolysis of concentrated sodium chloride solution (brine) is a crucial industrial process, producing hydrogen gas at the cathode, chlorine gas at the anode, and sodium hydroxide remaining in the solution. At the cathode, Na+ ions are far less reactive than H+, so H+ is discharged: 2H+ + 2e- → H2. At the anode, Cl- ions in concentrated solution are preferentially discharged over OH-: 2Cl- → Cl2 + 2e-. The remaining solution contains Na+ and OH-, forming sodium hydroxide. All three products are vital industrial feedstocks: hydrogen for ammonia synthesis and hydrogenation, chlorine for disinfection and PVC production, and sodium hydroxide for paper, soap, and detergent manufacturing. Edexcel exams require writing both half-equations at the electrodes.
Aluminium is the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust, but due to its high reactivity, it cannot be extracted by carbon reduction and must be obtained by electrolysis of bauxite ore (mainly Al2O3). The ore is first purified into alumina via the Bayer process, then electrolysed in a Hall-Heroult cell. Both anode and cathode are made of graphite. During electrolysis, the carbon anodes react with the oxygen produced to form CO2, so anodes must be replaced periodically. Roughly 4-5 tonnes of bauxite are needed to produce 1 tonne of aluminium, accounting for aluminium's high recycling value. This is the only GCSE Chemistry metal extraction case where the complete industrial process must be known in detail for the exam.
Electroplating uses electrolysis to deposit a thin layer of metal onto an object's surface, for corrosion protection (galvanising) and decoration (silver and gold plating). The object to be plated acts as the cathode, the plating metal serves as the anode, and the electrolyte contains ions of the plating metal. Copper refining is an industrial application of electroplating: impure copper is used as the anode, pure copper as the cathode, with copper sulfate solution as the electrolyte. When current flows, copper at the anode dissolves as Cu2+ into solution and then deposits as pure copper at the cathode, while impurities settle as anode sludge. Cathode copper can reach 99.99% purity. Edexcel questions frequently ask why the anode loses mass and why the cathode gains mass.
Half equations are a guaranteed question type in the electrolysis section, and Edexcel marking is rigorous about correct electron counts and state symbols. Writing steps: first, write the chemical formulas of reactants and products; second, calculate oxidation number changes to determine electron transfer; third, add electrons to the required side; fourth, verify charge and atom conservation. For example, the half equation for oxygen production at the anode: 4OH- → O2 + 2H2O + 4e-, must simultaneously satisfy oxygen atom, hydrogen atom, and charge conservation. The most common marks lost in exams come from missing the electron count, forgetting state symbols (s/l/g/aq), or confusing which electrode corresponds to oxidation versus reduction.
Several pitfalls in Edexcel GCSE Chemistry electrolysis deserve special attention. First, distinguish between "molten" and "aqueous" electrolysis -- molten produces elements only, while aqueous may produce hydrogen, oxygen, or hydroxides. Second, the reactivity series must be memorised fluently because it directly determines cathode products. Third, active electrodes (like copper) and inert electrodes (graphite, platinum) give completely different products -- active electrodes participate in the reaction. Fourth, note whether the question specifies "concentrated" solution -- concentration affects the discharge priority of halide ions at the anode. Fifth, Required Practical 3 (electrolysis of aqueous solutions), covering apparatus setup, observations, and conclusion analysis, is a guaranteed practical exam question and must be reviewed thoroughly.
