What is Bioenergetics?
Bioenergetics is one of the most fundamental topics in GCSE AQA Biology. It explores how living organisms obtain, transform, and use energy. At its core, bioenergetics answers a simple question: how do organisms stay alive? The answer lies in two interconnected processes — photosynthesis and respiration — that together form the energy cycle of life on Earth.
In the AQA specification, bioenergetics appears in Paper 1 (Topic 4) and carries significant weight in your final grade. Understanding this topic thoroughly not only helps you score well on photosynthesis and respiration questions but also provides the foundation for advanced topics like ecology, homeostasis, and inheritance at A-Level.
Photosynthesis: The Foundation of Life 光合作用:生命的基础
Photosynthesis is arguably the most important chemical reaction on Earth. Without it, there would be no oxygen to breathe and no food to eat. Every single food chain on our planet begins with a photosynthetic organism — a producer — that converts light energy into chemical energy stored in glucose.
The Photosynthesis Equation
This is the equation you must memorise for your exam. AQA examiners expect you to know both the word equation and the balanced symbol equation:
Word Equation
Carbon dioxide + Water → Glucose + Oxygen
Balanced Symbol Equation
Notice that the reaction requires light energy (written above the arrow) and chlorophyll (written below). Always include both when writing the full equation — many students lose marks by omitting chlorophyll!
How Photosynthesis Works
Photosynthesis is an endothermic reaction — it takes in energy from the surroundings. The energy comes from sunlight, absorbed by the green pigment chlorophyll found in chloroplasts within plant cells (specifically in palisade mesophyll cells of leaves).
The process occurs in two main stages:
1. Light-dependent reactions 光反应: Light energy splits water molecules (photolysis), releasing oxygen as a byproduct. This stage takes place in the thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts.
2. Light-independent reactions (Calvin cycle) 暗反应(卡尔文循环): Carbon dioxide is fixed and used to produce glucose. This occurs in the stroma of chloroplasts and uses the energy (ATP and NADPH) produced in the light-dependent stage.
Factors Affecting Photosynthesis
Three main factors limit the rate of photosynthesis. Understanding these is crucial for both exam questions and the Required Practical:
As light intensity increases, the rate of photosynthesis increases proportionally — until another factor becomes limiting. At very high light intensities, the rate plateaus.
CO₂ is a reactant. Increasing its concentration increases the rate of photosynthesis up to a point. In greenhouses, farmers often burn fuels to release extra CO₂ and boost crop yields.
3. Temperature 温度: Photosynthesis is controlled by enzymes. As temperature rises, the rate increases (more kinetic energy, more collisions). However, above the optimum (around 35-45°C for most plants), enzymes denature and the rate drops sharply.
The factor in shortest supply determines the overall rate. If light is limiting, adding more CO₂ will not increase photosynthesis. Only by addressing the limiting factor can the rate be improved — a classic graph interpretation question in AQA exams.
Uses of Glucose in Plants
Glucose produced during photosynthesis has five key fates in the plant. You need to know all five for the exam:
Glucose is broken down to release energy for cellular activities. This is the plant's immediate energy source.
2. Starch 淀粉: Glucose is converted into starch — an insoluble storage carbohydrate. Starch is ideal for storage because it is insoluble (does not affect osmotic balance), compact, and can be broken down when needed. You can test for starch in leaves using iodine solution (turns blue-black).
3. Cellulose 纤维素: Glucose is polymerised to form cellulose, the structural component of cell walls. Cellulose gives plant cells their strength and rigidity.
4. Proteins 蛋白质: Glucose combines with nitrate ions (absorbed from the soil) to produce amino acids, which then form proteins. This is why plants need nitrates — for growth and enzyme production.
5. Lipids (Fats and Oils) 脂质(脂肪和油): Glucose is converted into lipids for storage in seeds. These provide a concentrated energy source for germinating seedlings.
Respiration: Releasing Energy
Respiration is the process by which all living cells release energy from glucose. It is an exothermic reaction — it transfers energy to the surroundings. Do not confuse respiration with breathing (ventilation)! Respiration is a chemical process inside cells; breathing is the physical movement of air in and out of the lungs.
Aerobic Respiration
Aerobic respiration is the most efficient way to release energy from glucose. It requires oxygen and produces a large yield of ATP:
Word Equation
Glucose + Oxygen → Carbon dioxide + Water (+ Energy/ATP)
Balanced Symbol Equation
C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O (+ ATP)
Where does it happen? Aerobic respiration occurs in the mitochondria of cells. Cells that need lots of energy — like muscle cells and sperm cells — have many mitochondria. The folded inner membrane (cristae) provides a large surface area for the enzymes involved in respiration.
Anaerobic Respiration
When oxygen is not available, cells can still release energy through anaerobic respiration — but it is far less efficient and produces different byproducts depending on the organism. AQA requires you to know two types:
In Animals (including humans) 在动物体内(包括人类):
Glucose → Lactic acid (+ small amount of ATP)
During vigorous exercise, muscles may not receive enough oxygen. They switch to anaerobic respiration, producing lactic acid. This causes muscle fatigue and the familiar burning sensation. After exercise, the lactic acid must be oxidised back to CO₂ and water — this requires extra oxygen, known as the oxygen debt.
In Plants and Yeast
Glucose → Ethanol + Carbon dioxide (+ small amount of ATP)
This process is called fermentation and has enormous economic importance. Yeast fermentation is used in bread-making (CO₂ makes dough rise, ethanol evaporates during baking) and alcohol production (beer, wine, spirits). The ethanol produced is toxic to yeast at high concentrations (around 15%), which explains why naturally fermented drinks have limited alcohol content.
Comparing Aerobic and Anaerobic Respiration
This comparison is a classic 4-6 mark exam question. Be ready to write about:

Anaerobic 无氧: No oxygen required | Produces lactic acid (animals) or ethanol + CO₂ (yeast/plants) | Releases only 2 ATP per glucose molecule | Occurs in cytoplasm | Incomplete breakdown of glucose
Metabolism: The Big Picture
Metabolism is the sum of all chemical reactions occurring in a living organism. AQA defines it broadly, and you need to understand how photosynthesis and respiration fit into the metabolic network:

Required Practical: Light Intensity & Photosynthesis
This is one of the most commonly tested practicals in AQA Biology Paper 1. The experiment investigates the effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis using an aquatic plant (typically Elodea или Cabomba pondweed). Here is the method you need to know:
Method 方法:
1. Place a piece of pondweed in a beaker of water with sodium hydrogen carbonate (provides CO₂).
2. Position a lamp at a measured distance (e.g., 10 cm) from the plant.
3. Count the number of oxygen bubbles produced per minute — this indicates the rate of photosynthesis.
4. Repeat at different distances (20 cm, 30 cm, 40 cm, 50 cm).
5. Control variables: temperature (use a heat shield — a beaker of water between lamp and plant), CO₂ concentration (same amount of sodium hydrogen carbonate), and type/size of pondweed.
As distance increases, light intensity decreases (inverse square law). The rate of photosynthesis decreases accordingly. A graph of rate vs. 1/distance² should produce a straight line through the origin — confirming the inverse square relationship.
Response to Exercise
This topic links bioenergetics with the circulatory system (Topic 2: Organisation). During exercise, several changes occur in the body to meet increased energy demands:
More blood is pumped to muscles, delivering more oxygen and glucose while removing CO₂ faster.
2. Breathing rate and depth increase More oxygen is taken in and more CO₂ is expelled. The intercostal muscles and diaphragm work harder.
Stored glycogen in the liver and muscles is converted back to glucose for respiration.
4. Anaerobic respiration may occur If oxygen delivery cannot keep up, muscles switch to anaerobic respiration, producing lactic acid. This leads to an oxygen debt that must be repaid after exercise through continued deep breathing.
Common Exam Mistakes to Avoid
After marking thousands of AQA Biology scripts, examiners consistently report these errors. Make sure you do not fall into these traps:
1: Writing the photosynthesis equation backwards (respiration instead of photosynthesis, or vice versa). These are opposite reactions — practice writing both until you never confuse them.
2: Forgetting that photosynthesis requires chlorophyll. Many students write the equation without mentioning chlorophyll, losing a mark.
3: Saying respiration "creates" or "produces" energy. Respiration releases energy — a crucial distinction. Energy is never created, only transferred.
4: Confusing starch (storage in plants) with glycogen (storage in animals). Both are glucose polymers, but different organisms use different molecules.
5: Stating that anaerobic respiration in humans produces CO₂. It does NOT — only lactic acid is produced. CO₂ is only a byproduct of aerobic respiration in humans.
