Introduction
Cell Biology is the foundation of your GCSE Biology journey, and in the AQA specification, it carries significant weight — typically accounting for 15–20% of your final exam marks.
This article distills the AQA specification into focused, exam-ready knowledge points.
Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic Cells
The most fundamental distinction in cell biology is between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells.
Eukaryotic cells (真核细胞) — found in animals, plants, fungi, and protists — have a true nucleus containing genetic material (DNA) enclosed within a nuclear membrane. Key features include membrane-bound organelles such as mitochondria and, in plant cells, chloroplasts and a permanent vacuole. The DNA is linear and organized into chromosomes.
Prokaryotic cells (原核细胞) — typically bacteria — are much smaller and simpler. They lack a true nucleus; instead, the genetic material floats freely in the cytoplasm as a single circular strand of DNA. They may also contain small rings of DNA called plasmids. Prokaryotes do NOT have mitochondria or chloroplasts.
Exam tip: A common AQA question asks you to compare these two cell types. Always mention the nucleus, DNA structure (linear vs circular), size, and presence/absence of membrane-bound organelles.
Animal and Plant Cells
Both animal and plant cells are eukaryotic, but they have key differences that are frequently tested.
Subcellular structures in animal cells (动物细胞亚细胞结构): Nucleus (核) — controls the cell and contains DNA; Cytoplasm (细胞质) — site of chemical reactions; Cell membrane (细胞膜) — controls what enters and leaves; Mitochondria (线粒体) — site of aerobic respiration, releasing energy; Ribosomes (核糖体) — site of protein synthesis.
Plant cells have three additional structures (植物细胞独有的三种结构): Cell wall (细胞壁) — made of cellulose, provides strength and support; Chloroplasts (叶绿体) — contain chlorophyll, site of photosynthesis; Permanent vacuole (永久液泡) — filled with cell sap, helps maintain turgor pressure.
Exam tip: When asked to label a cell diagram, be precise. Use a ruler for label lines in your exam paper. AQA markers look for accurate placement of labels pointing to the correct structures.
Microscopy
Microscopy is a practical skill that appears in both Paper 1 and the required practical assessments.
Light microscopes (光学显微镜) use light and lenses to magnify specimens. They were developed in the late 16th century and allowed scientists to first observe cells. Modern light microscopes can achieve magnifications up to approximately 2000x, with a resolving power around 200 nm.
Electron microscopes (电子显微镜) use a beam of electrons instead of light. Invented in the 1930s, they revolutionized biology by allowing us to see subcellular structures in incredible detail. Transmission electron microscopes (TEM) can achieve magnifications up to 2,000,000x with resolving power around 0.2 nm.
Magnification formula (必考公式): Magnification = Image size / Actual size.
You MUST be able to rearrange this formula and convert between units. Remember: 1 mm = 1000 um, 1 um = 1000 nm. This is tested every year.
Cell Differentiation and Specialisation
As organisms develop, cells differentiate to perform specific functions. This process is crucial for multicellular life.
Key specialised cells in animals (动物中的特化细胞): Sperm cells (精子细胞) — streamlined with a tail (flagellum) for swimming, packed with mitochondria for energy, and contain digestive enzymes in the acrosome to penetrate the egg. Nerve cells (神经细胞) — long axon to carry electrical impulses over distance, myelin sheath for insulation, dendrites to connect with other neurons. Muscle cells (肌肉细胞) — contain many mitochondria for energy and special protein fibres that can contract.
Key specialised cells in plants (植物中的特化细胞): Root hair cells (根毛细胞) — long projections increase surface area for water and mineral absorption, no chloroplasts because roots are underground. Xylem cells (木质部细胞) — dead, hollow tubes with lignin-reinforced walls for water transport. Phloem cells (韧皮部细胞) — living cells with sieve plates for transporting dissolved sugars.
Cell Division: Mitosis
The cell cycle and mitosis are core topics in the AQA specification. The cell cycle consists of three main stages.
Stage 1 — Interphase (间期): The cell grows, increases its number of subcellular structures (ribosomes, mitochondria), and duplicates its DNA. The DNA is copied to form two identical sets of chromosomes. This is the longest stage of the cell cycle.
Stage 2 — Mitosis (有丝分裂): The nucleus divides. The chromosomes line up at the centre of the cell, and cell fibres pull one copy of each chromosome to opposite poles of the cell. This ensures each new cell receives an identical set of chromosomes.
Stage 3 — Cytokinesis (胞质分裂): The cytoplasm and cell membrane divide to form two genetically identical daughter cells. In plant cells, a new cell wall also forms between the two daughter cells.
Exam tip: Remember that mitosis produces two genetically identical daughter cells. This is for growth, repair, and asexual reproduction. Do NOT confuse mitosis with meiosis, which produces gametes and is covered in the Inheritance topic.
Transport in Cells
Substances move in and out of cells through three main processes. Understanding their differences is essential for high marks.
Diffusion (扩散) — the net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration, down a concentration gradient. It is a passive process — it does NOT require energy. Factors affecting the rate of diffusion include concentration gradient, temperature, and surface area. Examples: oxygen diffusing into blood from alveoli; carbon dioxide diffusing into leaves for photosynthesis.
Osmosis (渗透) — the net movement of water molecules from a dilute solution (high water potential) to a concentrated solution (low water potential) through a partially permeable membrane. AQA Required Practical: investigate osmosis using potato cylinders in different sugar/salt concentrations. Calculate percentage change in mass and plot a graph.
Active Transport (主动运输) — moves substances from low to high concentration, against the concentration gradient. Unlike diffusion and osmosis, this REQUIRES energy from respiration. Examples: uptake of mineral ions by root hair cells from soil; absorption of glucose in the small intestine.
Common Mistakes and Exam Strategy
Mistake 1: Confusing cell wall and cell membrane. The cell wall is rigid, made of cellulose, and found ONLY in plant cells. The cell membrane is flexible and found in ALL cells.
Mistake 2: Thinking that osmosis is simply "movement of water." Osmosis specifically requires a partially permeable membrane and a water potential gradient.
Mistake 3: Forgetting to convert units in magnification calculations. Always check your units before substituting into the formula.
Mistake 4: Stating that "mitosis produces four daughter cells." That is meiosis — mitosis produces two.
High-mark strategy: For 4–6 mark questions, structure your answer logically. Use scientific terminology precisely. Show your working for calculations. Compare and contrast where the question asks for it.
