什么是TOK Exhibition
What role does imagination play in producing knowledge about the world?"
To what extent is knowledge shaped by the culture in which it is produced?"
What counts as good evidence for a claim?"
What ethical constraints should limit the pursuit of knowledge?"
What is the relationship between knowledge and certainty?"
IB TOK Exhibition: Prompt Selection and Analysis Framework
What is the TOK Exhibition
The IB TOK Exhibition is the Internal Assessment for Theory of Knowledge, worth one-third of the TOK grade. Students select one of 35 IA prompts, choose three objects connected to that prompt, and write 950-word commentaries per object. Introduced in 2020 to replace the TOK Presentation, the Exhibition requires no live delivery — commentaries are submitted with images of the objects, allowing more time for deep reflection and revision.
The 35 IA Prompts: Categories and Strategy
The 35 IA prompts center on core TOK themes. Understanding their categories helps target suitable directions:Knowledge and Technology — how technology transforms knowledge access (e.g., "What role does imagination play in producing knowledge about the world?"). Knowledge and Culture — how culture shapes knowledge (e.g., "To what extent is knowledge shaped by the culture in which it is produced?"). Knowledge and Methodology — methodological differences across Areas of Knowledge (e.g., "What counts as good evidence for a claim?"). Ethical Dimensions — ethical constraints on knowledge pursuit (e.g., "What ethical constraints should limit the pursuit of knowledge?"). Nature of Knowledge — questions of certainty (e.g., "What is the relationship between knowledge and certainty?").
Three-Step Selection
Step 1: Read all 35 prompts, mark 5-7 that spark immediate object ideas. Step 2: Brainstorm 3-5 possible objects per candidate — books, artworks, instruments, music, or everyday items. Step 3: Assess whether you can write 950 insightful words per object. If a prompt yields insufficient material, move on.
Object Selection Principles
Specificity — objects must be concrete entities, not abstract categories. Choose "iPhone 4," not "smartphones." Choose your IB Biology textbook, not "textbooks." Personal Connection — objects should relate to your experiences; the rubric requires demonstrating real-world context. Diversity — select from different domains (e.g., natural sciences, arts, daily life). Analytical Depth — each object must sustain 950 words of analysis.
The PEC Framework
P — Personal Connection (~200 words): Your personal link to the object and why you chose it. E — Exhibition Context (~250 words): Situate the object within the TOK framework and IA prompt. C — Conceptual Analysis (~500 words): The core — analyze how the object illuminates knowledge questions, referencing TOK concepts like evidence, certainty, and value judgment to demonstrate critical thinking.
High Scores and Pitfalls
Strategies: Ensure unity across diverse objects; reference TOK concepts explicitly; create dialogue between commentaries. Pitfalls: Overly broad objects (e.g., "the Internet"); descriptive rather than analytical commentaries; isolated commentaries lacking coherence; ignoring specific wording of the prompt.
