Step 1: Start from personal interest. List 5 things you genuinely care about — hobbies, sports, music, travel. Every interest contains potential math: basketball parabolas are quadratic functions, constellation positions use polar coordinates, musical frequencies follow geometric sequences.
Step 2: Connect to syllabus. Link interests to IB math topics. Ask: which variables can be quantified? Is there a functional relationship? What data can I collect? The key is finding the right difficulty — challenging but manageable.
Step 3: Assess feasibility. Can you access the data? Can you present it within 12 pages? Do you understand the core math tools? If any answer is "no," adjust your direction.

Introduction (~1 page): Present your topic, explain personal interest, state your research question. This is where Personal Engagement is demonstrated.
Mathematical Exploration (~6-8 pages): The core. Showcase your model, derivation, data analysis, and visualization. At every step, explain why you did it — not just what you did.
Conclusion (~1 page): Summarize findings, answer the research question, evaluate strengths and limitations. Reflection must be specific: which assumptions might fail? What if you used a different method? Under what conditions does the model break down?
五大常见扣分点 | Five Common Pitfalls
X 选题太宽泛："研究气候变化的数学模型"能写一本书。缩小为"用逻辑斯蒂模型拟合某城市20年温度趋势"。
X 选题太简单："证明勾股定理"像课堂练习。升级为"勾股定理在GPS定位中的应用"。
X 数学深度不足：仅用均值和标准差最多得2-3分。加入假设检验、置信区间、回归分析可大幅提升。
X 忽视个人投入：整篇文章像维基百科词条必丢分。解释为什么你个人选择这个话题。
X Superficial reflection："My model is good but may have errors" is not reflection. Be specific about assumptions, alternative methods, and failure conditions.
