AQA GCSE Psychology Memory
What is Memory?
Memory is one of the most fundamental concepts in cognitive psychology, referring to the processes by which the brain encodes, stores, and retrieves information. In the AQA GCSE Psychology specification, the Memory module requires students to understand three key cognitive processes: encoding -- how information enters the memory system; storage -- how information is retained over time; and retrieval -- how information is accessed when needed. These three stages form a complete chain, and failure at any stage can result in forgetting. The exam often tests your ability to distinguish between these processes with reference to specific research studies.
(MSM) The Multi-Store Model
Atkinson and Shiffrin's Multi-Store Model (MSM), proposed in 1968, is the most important theoretical framework in the GCSE course. The model divides memory into three separate stores: the Sensory Register, Short-Term Memory (STM), and Long-Term Memory (LTM). Information passes from the Sensory Register to STM through attention, and from STM to LTM through rehearsal. The core assumption of MSM is that these three stores differ fundamentally in terms of capacity, duration, and coding. This model appears in nearly every past paper, and exam questions frequently ask you to outline the model or evaluate its strengths and limitations. A common evaluation point is that MSM oversimplifies memory -- later research shows STM and LTM are not unitary stores but have multiple sub-types.
Sensory Register
The Sensory Register is the first stop for incoming information. Data from the five senses lingers here very briefly (roughly 250 milliseconds to 2 seconds), but the capacity is virtually unlimited. Sperling's classic 1960 experiment flashed three rows of letters using a tachistoscope and asked participants for partial reports -- the results demonstrated that sensory memory genuinely exists and stores information in its original sensory form. For the GCSE exam, the key figures to remember are: coding is modality-specific, meaning visual information is stored as iconic memory and auditory information as echoic memory. The sensory register has very high capacity but extremely short duration -- if attention is not paid, the information fades and is lost forever.
(STM) Short-Term Memory
Short-Term Memory is the temporary holding area for information that has been attended to. It has a limited capacity of 7 plus or minus 2 chunks (Miller, 1956) and a duration of roughly 18 to 30 seconds. Peterson and Peterson's classic 1959 study found that without rehearsal, information in STM decays rapidly -- recall accuracy was about 80 percent after 3 seconds but dropped below 10 percent after 18 seconds. STM primarily uses acoustic coding, meaning information is stored in sound-based form. Conrad's 1964 study found that participants made more errors when recalling acoustically similar letters (B, C, D, P, T), providing strong evidence that STM relies on acoustic rather than visual coding. A key exam point: chunking can increase the effective capacity of STM by grouping individual items into meaningful units.
(LTM) Long-Term Memory
Long-Term Memory is the permanent storehouse of information, with theoretically unlimited capacity and duration. Unlike STM, LTM primarily uses semantic coding, meaning information is stored by meaning rather than by sound or appearance. Baddeley's 1966 experiment presented participants with semantically similar and semantically dissimilar word lists, finding that participants confused semantically similar words more often -- strong evidence that LTM relies on semantic coding. In a landmark 1975 study, Bahrick et al. found that participants could still recognise around 90 percent of their classmates' photos and names even 50 years after graduation, demonstrating that LTM duration can be extraordinarily long-lasting. This study is a classic example of high ecological validity in memory research because it used real, personally meaningful material rather than artificial laboratory stimuli.
Types of LTM
Tulving proposed in 1972 that LTM is not a single system but comprises three distinct types: episodic memory -- personal experiences tied to specific times and places, such as your first cycling lesson; semantic memory -- factual knowledge about the world, such as knowing London is the capital of the UK; and procedural memory -- knowing how to do things, such as riding a bike or typing. Episodic and semantic memory are declarative memories that can be consciously recalled, while procedural memory is non-declarative and demonstrated through performance rather than verbal description. AQA frequently asks students to distinguish between these types using real-world examples. A strong answer will reference clinical evidence, such as the case of Clive Wearing, who lost his episodic memory after viral encephalitis but retained procedural memory -- he could still play the piano but could not remember playing it moments earlier.
Serial Position Effect
Murdock's 1962 experiment asked participants to recall a list of 20 words, finding that recall accuracy was strongly influenced by a word's position in the list, producing a classic U-shaped curve: words at the beginning (primacy effect) and end (recency effect) were recalled best, while words in the middle were recalled worst. The primacy effect is explained by the fact that early words receive more rehearsal time and are transferred into LTM, while the recency effect occurs because end-of-list words are still held in STM and are easily retrieved. This finding strongly supports the MSM's claim that STM and LTM are separate stores. A common exam question asks students to explain how the serial position curve provides evidence for the distinction between STM and LTM -- if they were a single store, all list positions would show similar recall rates, which they clearly do not.
Peterson and Peterson in 1959 designed a clever experiment to investigate the duration of STM. Participants saw a consonant trigram (such as CPW or NRD) and were immediately asked to count backwards from a three-digit number to prevent rehearsal. After intervals of 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, or 18 seconds, they were asked to recall the trigram. Results showed that recall accuracy declined sharply as the retention interval increased: about 80 percent correct after 3 seconds, but only about 5 percent correct after 18 seconds. The conclusion: when rehearsal is prevented, information in STM decays rapidly within roughly 18 seconds. Methodologically, this study is strong because it used a standardised procedure with a controlled laboratory environment. However, critics argue the task lacks mundane realism -- in real life, we rarely memorise random consonant trigrams while counting backwards from a three-digit number.
九、Bartlett的War of the Ghosts研究
Bartlett's 1932 study asked British participants to read a North American Indian folk tale called "The War of the Ghosts" and then reproduce it at various time intervals. Bartlett found that participants' reproductions were systematically distorted from the original: the story was shortened through omissions, rationalised by adding explanations that made sense within British cultural norms, and assimilated by adapting details to fit the participants' own cultural frameworks. This groundbreaking research overturned the then-dominant view of memory as a passive, accurate recorder. Instead, Bartlett proposed that memory is an active, reconstructive process -- people use their existing schemas to fill in gaps and impose meaning. For the GCSE exam, remember that Bartlett used qualitative analysis rather than quantitative measures, which gives his study high ecological validity but makes it harder to replicate reliably. The concept of schema is one of the most heavily examined ideas in this module.
Factors Affecting Memory
Several factors have been shown by research to affect memory accuracy. Interference theory proposes that competition between old and new information causes forgetting: proactive interference is when old information disrupts learning of new information, while retroactive interference is when new information disrupts recall of old information. Additionally, contextual factors play a key role -- Godden and Baddeley's 1975 study found that divers who learned words underwater recalled them better underwater, while those who learned on land recalled better on land, a phenomenon known as context-dependent memory. Emotional state also matters: mood-congruent memory suggests people more easily recall memories that match their current emotional state. Leading questions, as demonstrated by Loftus and Palmer's classic 1974 study on eyewitness testimony, can also distort memory -- participants who heard the verb "smashed" estimated higher car speeds than those who heard "contacted."
Exam Tips and Common Mistakes
The AQA GCSE Psychology Memory module typically appears in short-answer, extended-writing, and application-based exam questions. The most common pitfalls include: confusing the concepts of coding, capacity, and duration -- be ready to fully describe STM's coding, capacity, and duration; describing studies without evaluation -- AQA requires at least two strengths and two limitations for each key study; and failing to link theory to real-world scenarios -- for example, explaining why revision spread over several weeks is more effective than cramming the night before an exam, because distributed rehearsal promotes better LTM encoding than massed practice. Create flashcards matching researcher names to their key findings and review them regularly before the exam. Pay special attention to the ethical considerations of each study -- Bartlett's use of culturally unfamiliar material and Peterson and Peterson's use of meaningless trigrams both raise questions about the validity of findings when applied to everyday memory.
Conclusion and Study Advice
The Memory module is theory-heavy, but once you untangle the logical chain of each model and the key experimental evidence supporting it, exam success becomes achievable. The core revision pathway: first master the MSM's three-store structure and the characteristic differences between them, then deepen your understanding of Tulving's three LTM types, use the key studies by Murdock, Peterson and Peterson, and Bartlett as empirical anchors, and finally learn to explain everyday forgetting through interference theory and contextual factors. Aim to complete at least two extended-response Memory questions from past papers each week, gradually building an intuitive understanding of the mark scheme. Remember that the best answers integrate description with evaluation, moving seamlessly between stating what a study found and explaining why the methodology matters.
