MYP Personal Project
IB MYP(Middle Years Programme)的Personal Project是十年级学生必须完成的标志性任务。
The IB MYP Personal Project is a signature requirement for Year 10 (Grade 9/10) students. It demands that each student independently choose a topic of personal interest, carry out a systematic inquiry, produce a tangible outcome or product, and write a reflective report. For many students and parents, the Personal Project represents both an opportunity to showcase creativity and academic rigour and a challenge that requires careful planning. This article offers a bilingual, step-by-step guide to topic selection, planning strategies, and common pitfalls -- helping students complete this milestone project with confidence.
MYP Personal Project
The Personal Project is a core component of the IB MYP curriculum. Every MYP Year 5 student (typically Grade 10) must complete it independently. The essence lies in the word "personal": the topic is student-chosen, the process is student-led, and the outcome reflects the student's interests, skills, and growth. The project typically spans 6-8 months and culminates in a product (physical, digital, performance-based, or event-driven) and a written report. The report must document the inquiry process, skill development, and reflection on the IB Learner Profile attributes.
Topic selection is the single most decisive factor in Personal Project success. A strong topic satisfies three conditions simultaneously: first, the student has genuine interest and intrinsic motivation -- not just because it "looks easy to score well"; second, the topic is inquiry-worthy, meaning it has a clear Learning Goal and a measurable Product Goal; third, the topic is feasible in terms of time, resources, and required skills. We recommend that students use an "Interest-Skills-Feasibility" triangle framework during the initial selection phase, scoring each candidate topic to identify the optimal choice.
Based on historical data from MYP schools worldwide, five categories attract the highest student interest: Creative Design (e.g., designing an app prototype, creating a fashion collection, producing a short film or animation); Community Service (e.g., organising a charity fundraiser, designing a campus environmental initiative); Academic Inquiry (e.g., researching a programming language, writing a historical analysis report); Skill Acquisition (e.g., learning guitar from scratch, mastering oil painting, training for a marathon); and STEM/Engineering (e.g., building a robot, designing a sustainable energy model). The choice depends on the student's interests and future aspirations, but the core criterion is always the depth of inquiry rather than the polish of the final product.
After settling on a preliminary topic, students must conduct a systematic feasibility analysis. We recommend evaluating across four dimensions: Time (can it be completed within 6-8 months? How many hours per week are needed?), Resources (are the required materials, equipment, and venues accessible? Is the budget manageable?), Skills (what is the gap between current ability and project demands? What new skills must be acquired?), and Supervision (can a suitable mentor or supervisor be found?). Score each dimension on a 1-5 scale; any topic scoring below 12 total should be revised or abandoned. This step may seem tedious, but it effectively prevents the massive time loss of discovering a dead-end direction mid-project.
A solid research plan should include: clear Learning and Product Goals (expressed using SMART criteria), phased milestones (monthly or biweekly checkpoints), research methods and source types (primary research, secondary literature, expert interviews, etc.), an ATL skill development plan (specifying which Approaches to Learning skills to develop), and risk assessment with contingency options. We recommend that students use Gantt charts or project management tools such as Notion or Trello to visualise progress, and conduct weekly progress reviews. The plan need not be flawless, but it must be specific enough that the student knows exactly what to do next every time they open it.
The greatest enemy of the Personal Project is not topic difficulty but procrastination. With a timeline stretching over half a year, students under regular academic pressure easily keep postponing project work. Our recommendation is to use "backward planning": start from the final submission date and work backwards to set the report deadline, product completion date, and research-phase end date, then break tasks down to weekly and daily levels. Working 30-45 minutes daily on the project is more effective than cramming 5 hours on a weekend. Additionally, we advise students to schedule biweekly mentor check-ins, using external accountability to maintain momentum.
The Process Journal is the Personal Project's "hidden scoring opportunity". Many students underestimate its importance until they sit down to write the report and realise they lack sufficient reflective material. The journal is not a diary and does not require lengthy prose; it should be an authentic record of the inquiry process, including sources of inspiration, obstacles encountered and their solutions, evidence of skill progression, and reflections on ATL skill application. The format is flexible: text, photos, audio, video, mind maps -- all are acceptable. We recommend recording 2-3 entries per week, each focused on a specific issue or insight, and explicitly noting which assessment criterion each entry relates to.
Personal Project报告分为三个评估标准:A(Planning,规划)、B(Applying Skills,技能应用)、C(Reflecting,反思),每个标准最高8分,总分24分。
The Personal Project report is assessed on three criteria: A (Planning), B (Applying Skills), and C (Reflecting), each worth a maximum of 8 marks for a total of 24. The report body (excluding appendices and bibliography) typically ranges from 1,500 to 3,500 words. Criterion A requires a clear Learning Goal and Product Goal, an action plan, and evidence of research skills used. Criterion B requires demonstrating the application and growth of ATL skills (Thinking, Social, Communication, Self-Management, and Research skills) throughout the project. Criterion C requires evaluating the product's impact on the learning goal and showing overall growth as an IB learner. When writing, each criterion must be supported by specific evidence such as journal excerpts, data, or mentor feedback.
Drawing on years of Personal Project supervision experience, we have identified five high-frequency mistakes and their remedies. First, choosing an overly broad topic: students pick "solving global warming" but find it nearly impossible to operationalise. The fix is to narrow the scope to a manageable range, such as "designing a campus plastic-reduction initiative". Second, confusing Learning Goals with Product Goals: many students treat "making a photo book" as their learning goal, but that is the product goal. The learning goal should be something like "exploring colour theory and improving visual storytelling skills". Third, insufficient journaling: the solution is to start recording from Day One, even if it is just a voice memo on a phone. Fourth, neglecting ATL skill evidence collection: save specific examples of skill application at every project phase. Fifth, starting the report two weeks before the deadline: the ideal rhythm is to draft report sections alongside project work, reserving the final month for integration and polishing.
The parent's role in the Personal Project is "supporter", not "director". The IB explicitly requires that the project be student-led and independently completed, but that does not mean parents must stay completely uninvolved. What parents can do: help create a quiet working environment, engage in brainstorming conversations during topic selection (without making decisions for the child), provide emotional support during setbacks, assist with logistics such as arranging mentor meetings or resource access, and proofread the report for grammar before submission. What parents should not do: write sections of the report, complete the product or research on behalf of the child, or directly dictate the topic choice. Maintaining the boundary of "scaffolded support" is essential for the student to derive genuine growth from the project.
Q: Can two students collaborate on a Personal Project? A: No. IB requires each student to complete the project independently, though seeking advice and feedback from others during the process is encouraged. Q: What if I realise mid-project that I chose the wrong direction? A: Immediately consult your supervisor and assess whether the goals can be adjusted within the existing framework. If continuation is truly impossible, IB allows a topic change in the early stages, though available time will be compressed. Q: Can I still score well if my product fails? A: Yes. Assessment focuses on the inquiry process and depth of reflection rather than the product's polish. Even if the product falls short of expectations, a report that thoroughly analyses the reasons and demonstrates learning growth can still achieve high marks. Q: Can the report be written in Chinese? A: This depends on school policy; most IB schools require the report in the language of instruction (typically English).
The Personal Project is called "personal" precisely because it should tell your story. It is not an assembly-line assignment but a genuine journey of self-discovery. When you apply to universities and sit for interviews in the future, your Personal Project experience will become some of the most powerful material for your personal statement, because it authentically demonstrates your ability to set goals, overcome obstacles, and complete something meaningful without external supervision. Whatever topic you choose, remember three keywords: authenticity, perseverance, and reflection. Embark on your Personal Project journey with these three words in mind, and you will find that it is not merely an IB requirement but a life experience worth being proud of.
