KS3 Science:
What is an Atom?
An atom is the smallest unit of matter that retains chemical properties. Everything around you — tables, water, air, even your body — is built from atoms. The idea dates back to the Greek philosopher Democritus, who coined the word "atomos" meaning indivisible.
Atomic Structure
Atoms contain three subatomic particles: protons (+1 charge, in nucleus), neutrons (0 charge, in nucleus), and electrons (-1 charge, orbiting nucleus). All atoms are neutral because protons equal electrons. Key KS3 data: proton mass=1, charge=+1; neutron mass=1, charge=0; electron mass≈0, charge=-1.
Elements and the Periodic Table
An element is a pure substance of one atom type. 118 elements are known, ~92 natural. The Periodic Table, proposed by Mendeleev in 1869, arranges elements by atomic number. Columns are Groups, rows are Periods. Same Group = similar properties: Group 1 alkali metals, Group 7 halogens, Group 0/8 noble gases.
Elements, Compounds & Mixtures
Key KS3 distinction: Elements are pure, one atom type (gold Au, oxygen O₂). Compounds are chemically bonded elements in fixed ratios (water H₂O). Mixtures are physically combined, no fixed ratio (air). Compounds need chemical reactions to separate; mixtures can be separated by physical methods like filtration or distillation.
Chemical Symbols and Equations
Chemical symbols: 1-2 letters, first uppercase, second lowercase. Co=cobalt vs CO=carbon monoxide — capitalisation matters! Formulas use subscripts: H₂O, CO₂, NaCl. KS3 requires word and symbol equations: magnesium+oxygen→magnesium oxide; 2Mg+O₂→2MgO.
Key Elements in Daily Life
Oxygen: 21% of air, essential for respiration and combustion.
Carbon: basis of organic chemistry; allotropes include diamond and graphite.
Iron: widely used in construction and manufacturing.
Copper: excellent conductor for wiring and plumbing.
Aluminium: lightweight, used in aircraft and cans.
Gold: unreactive, used in jewellery and electronics.
Bonding Basics
2,8,7。Atoms bond to achieve stable electron shells (Octet Rule: 2 or 8 electrons). Ionic bonding: metal loses electrons → cation, non-metal gains → anion; electrostatic attraction holds them (NaCl: Na→Na⁺, Cl→Cl⁻). Covalent bonding: non-metals share electron pairs (H₂O: oxygen shares one pair with each hydrogen). Memorise electron configurations of first 20 elements — sodium 2,8,1; chlorine 2,8,7.
Key Takeaways
Core concepts: all matter = atoms; proton count = atomic number, determines element; atoms neutral (protons=electrons); Periodic Table by atomic number, Groups/Periods show properties; elements pure one-atom type, compounds chemically bonded, mixtures physically combined. Skills: identify elements from formulas; write word and symbol equations; distinguish physical vs chemical changes; Law of Conservation of Mass — atoms rearrange, never created or destroyed.
