Edexcel IGCSE Physics Forces
Forces form the backbone of Edexcel IGCSE Physics, appearing across multiple units from Motion and Forces (Unit 1) to Waves and Electricity. Mastering forces is not just about memorising Newton's three laws -- it requires understanding vector nature, drawing free-body diagrams, and applying mathematical relationships confidently. This guide walks you through every major forces topic tested in the Edexcel IGCSE specification (4PH1), with bilingual explanations and exam-focused strategies.
Scalars and Vectors: The Foundation
Every quantity in physics is either a scalar or a vector. Scalars have magnitude only -- distance, speed, mass, energy, and time are all scalars. Vectors have both magnitude and direction -- displacement, velocity, acceleration, force, and momentum are vectors. In Edexcel IGCSE Paper 1 and Paper 2, you must be able to identify whether a quantity is scalar or vector, and the exam frequently tests this in multiple-choice questions.
Vector addition is tested regularly. When two vectors act in the same direction, simply add their magnitudes. When they act in opposite directions, subtract. For perpendicular vectors, use Pythagoras' theorem to find the resultant and trigonometry to find the direction. A classic exam question: a boat travels east at 3 m/s across a river flowing south at 4 m/s -- what is the resultant velocity? Answer: 5 m/s at an angle of about 53 degrees south of east.
The Edexcel IGCSE specification expects you to recognise and describe several fundamental forces. Weight (W = mg) is the gravitational pull on an object and always acts vertically downwards toward the centre of the Earth. Normal reaction (R) acts perpendicular to a surface and balances the component of weight pressing into that surface. Friction opposes motion between two surfaces in contact and acts parallel to the interface. Tension is the pulling force transmitted through a string, cable, or rope when it is pulled tight. Air resistance (drag) opposes the motion of an object through a fluid and increases with speed. Upthrust is the upward buoyant force a fluid exerts on an object immersed in it.
Hooke's Law is a core practical topic. For a spring, the extension is directly proportional to the applied force, provided the elastic limit is not exceeded: F = kx, where k is the spring constant (N/m) and x is extension (m). The spring constant measures stiffness -- a stiffer spring has a larger k. Exam tip: in force-extension graphs, the straight-line region obeys Hooke's Law; once the graph curves, the elastic limit has been exceeded and the spring undergoes plastic deformation.
三、Newton's Laws of Motion 牛顿运动定律
Newton's First Law states that an object remains at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by a resultant force. This is the principle of inertia -- the tendency of objects to resist changes in their state of motion. In exam questions, if an object moves at constant velocity, the resultant force on it must be zero. This is the key to solving equilibrium problems.
Newton's Second Law is arguably the most important equation in mechanics: F = ma. The resultant force (F) on an object equals its mass (m) multiplied by its acceleration (a). Force is measured in newtons (N), mass in kilograms (kg), and acceleration in metres per second squared (m/s^2). This law tells us that acceleration is directly proportional to the resultant force and inversely proportional to mass. A critical exam skill: identify all forces acting on the object, find the resultant by considering directions, then apply F = ma.
Newton's Third Law is often misunderstood. It states that when object A exerts a force on object B, object B exerts an equal and opposite force on object A -- F_AB = -F_BA. The action and reaction forces act on different objects, so they never cancel each other out. A common trap: students confuse Newton's Third Law pairs (two forces on two different objects) with balanced forces (two forces on the same object). If you push a wall, the wall pushes back on you with equal force -- that is Newton's Third Law. Your hand and the wall are different objects.
Drawing accurate free-body diagrams is essential for solving mechanics problems. Represent the object as a dot or a box, then draw arrows for every force acting on it. Each arrow must start from the object, point in the correct direction, and be labelled. Never draw forces that the object exerts on other objects -- only forces acting on the object of interest. In Edexcel IGCSE, marks are awarded for correct force labels, correct direction, and appropriate relative lengths of arrows where magnitudes are comparable.
To find the resultant force, first resolve all forces into horizontal and vertical components. For a force F acting at an angle theta to the horizontal, the horizontal component is F cos theta and the vertical component is F sin theta. Then sum components in each direction separately. For an object resting on a slope of angle theta, its weight mg splits into mg sin theta parallel to the slope (pulling it down) and mg cos theta perpendicular to the slope (balanced by the normal reaction).
When an object falls through a fluid, three vertical forces act on it: weight (downwards), upthrust (upwards, usually negligible for dense objects in air), and drag (upwards, increasing with speed). Initially, weight exceeds drag, so there is a downward resultant force and the object accelerates. As speed increases, drag increases. When drag plus upthrust equals weight, the resultant force becomes zero, acceleration stops, and the object falls at a constant terminal velocity.
The terminal velocity of a skydiver demonstrates this process clearly. Before the parachute opens, the diver accelerates until air resistance balances weight at around 55 m/s. When the parachute deploys, the dramatically increased surface area produces a huge upward drag force. The diver decelerates until a new, much lower terminal velocity of about 5 m/s is reached for a safe landing. Edexcel IGCSE frequently asks students to interpret velocity-time graphs showing these changes.
A moment is the turning effect of a force about a pivot. Moment (Nm) = force (N) × perpendicular distance from pivot to line of action (m): M = Fd. The distance must be perpendicular -- if the force acts at an angle, you must calculate the perpendicular component or use the perpendicular distance. The principle of moments states that for an object in rotational equilibrium, the sum of clockwise moments equals the sum of anticlockwise moments about any pivot.
Centre of gravity is the point through which the entire weight of an object appears to act. For a uniform regular shape, the centre of gravity is at its geometric centre. For an irregular shape, it can be found experimentally by suspending the object from different points and marking the vertical lines -- where they intersect is the centre of gravity. An object topples when its centre of gravity lies outside its base, creating an unbalanced moment.
Edexcel IGCSE Physics forces questions typically make up around 25 to 30 percent of the marks across both papers. In Paper 1 (multiple choice), expect questions on identifying scalar versus vector quantities, applying F = ma, and interpreting force-extension or velocity-time graphs. In Paper 2 (structured questions), you will face calculations requiring clear working -- always write the formula, substitute values with units, and give the final answer to an appropriate number of significant figures. Edexcel's mark schemes award method marks generously, so showing your working is essential even if your final answer is wrong.
Common pitfalls to avoid: confusing mass and weight (mass is in kg, weight is in N and equals mg); forgetting that resultant force is zero for constant velocity, not just for stationary objects; using the wrong perpendicular distance in moment calculations; mixing up Newton's Third Law pairs with balanced forces; and forgetting to convert units -- Edexcel frequently gives data in cm or g to test whether you convert to m and kg. Always check your units before substituting into any formula.
The key to excelling in forces is disciplined problem-solving: draw the free-body diagram, resolve forces into components, write the relevant equation, substitute carefully, and check that the answer is physically reasonable. With consistent practice using past papers, forces becomes one of the most predictable and high-scoring topics in the entire Edexcel IGCSE Physics syllabus.
