Alevel
What is Social Influence?
Social Influence is a core module in Edexcel A-Level Psychology Paper 1. It examines how an individual's thoughts, feelings and behaviours are changed by the real or imagined presence of others. This module is mark-heavy and theory-dense, testing your ability to distinguish between conformity, obedience, and minority influence. Social influence appears not only in Section A multiple-choice questions but also as a frequent source of Section B short-answer and Section C extended essay questions. If you want an A* in Paper 1, social influence is non-negotiable. Master Kelman's three types of conformity, Asch's line judgment study, Zimbardo's Stanford Prison Experiment, Milgram's electric shock obedience research, and Moscovici's minority influence theory, and you have the entire module covered.
Types and Explanations of Conformity
Kelman (1958) proposed three types of conformity: compliance, identification, and internalisation. Compliance is the shallowest form: the individual publicly changes behaviour but privately maintains their original view, as seen in Asch's study where participants knowingly gave wrong answers to conform. Identification occurs when someone wants to establish a relationship with a group, with behaviour change driven by group identification, such as role internalisation in Zimbardo's prison experiment. Internalisation is the deepest form: the individual accepts group norms both publicly and privately, and these beliefs become part of their value system, maintained even when the group is no longer present. For explanations, Deutsch and Gerard's (1955) dual-process model distinguishes normative social influence (NSI), driven by the desire to be liked and belong (emotional), from informational social influence (ISI), driven by the desire to be correct (cognitive).
Asch's Conformity Research
Asch(1951,1956)的线条判断实验是心理学史上最经典的从众研究。
Asch's (1951, 1956) line judgment experiment is the most iconic conformity study in psychology. 123 male American undergraduates were placed in groups of 7-9 and asked to judge which of three comparison lines matched a standard line. Only one was a genuine participant; the rest were confederates. Across 12 critical trials, confederates unanimously gave obviously wrong answers. Results: overall conformity rate was 36.8%, 75% of participants conformed at least once, and only 25% never conformed. Key variables affecting conformity: group size -- conformity rose sharply to 31.8% when increasing from 1 to 3 confederates, plateauing beyond 3; when unanimity was broken by a single dissenter, conformity dropped from 36.8% to just 5.5%; as task difficulty increased, ISI became stronger, raising conformity rates. A03 evaluation points for Asch: high experimental control but low ecological validity (judging line length is not daily behaviour), cultural bias (individualistic American society), and ethical concerns (deception).
Zimbardo's Stanford Prison Experiment
Zimbardo (1973) recruited 24 emotionally stable, psychologically healthy male undergraduates, randomly assigned to guard and prisoner roles in a simulated prison in the Stanford University basement for a planned two-week study. Prisoners were "arrested", strip-searched, given prison uniforms, and assigned numbers; guards received uniforms, batons, and reflective sunglasses. Results were shocking: participants rapidly internalised their social roles. Guards became increasingly abusive and authoritarian, harassing prisoners at night, forcing push-ups, and denying basic rights; prisoners began showing extreme stress, emotional breakdowns, and learned helplessness. The experiment was terminated after just 6 days, far exceeding expected extremity. Evaluation: Zimbardo demonstrated the powerful shaping force of social roles on behaviour, strongly supporting situational attribution; however, the study severely lacked ethical controls, and Zimbardo's own role conflict as "prison superintendent" compromised objectivity. Haslam and Reicher's (2012) BBC Prison Study failed to fully replicate these findings, suggesting individual differences and leadership style also play important roles.
Milgram's Obedience Studies and Agency Theory
Milgram (1963) conducted one of the most controversial experiments in social psychology at Yale University. 40 male participants were led to believe they were taking part in a study on the effect of punishment on learning. They played the role of "teacher" and were told to administer increasingly strong electric shocks (15V to 450V) each time the "learner" (actually an actor) made a mistake, following the experimenter's instructions. Shocking results: 65% of participants went all the way to 450V (the highest setting, labelled "XXX Danger"), and 100% went to at least 300V before stopping. Milgram proposed Agency Theory to explain this: when individuals enter the agentic state, they see themselves merely as instruments executing the authority's will and therefore do not feel responsible for the consequences of their actions. The key factor triggering the shift from autonomous to agentic state is the presence of legitimate authority and socialisation into obedience. Evaluation: the study was groundbreaking in explaining historical tragedies like the Nazi Holocaust; but it severely violates modern ethical standards (deception, restricted right to withdraw, psychological harm); Orne and Holland (1968) questioned whether demand characteristics may have influenced results.
Situational Variables and Resistance to Social Influence
Milgram systematically investigated situational factors affecting obedience levels through a series of variation experiments. Proximity was the most powerful variable: when the "teacher" and "learner" were in the same room, obedience dropped from 65% to 40%; when the teacher had to force the learner's hand onto the shock plate (touch proximity), obedience plunged to 30%. Location: moving the experiment from Yale University to a downtown office building reduced obedience from 65% to 47.5%, because institutional prestige weakened the experimenter's legitimate authority. Uniform: replacing the experimenter with an "ordinary person" in plain clothes dropped obedience further to 20%. Regarding resistance to social influence, the social support theory proposes that the presence of a dissenting ally gives individuals courage to resist group pressure, consistent with the dissenter effect in Asch's study. Rotter's (1966) Locus of Control theory suggests that internals are more likely to resist social influence because they believe their own actions determine outcomes, whereas externals are more susceptible to conformity and obedience.
Minority Influence and Social Change
Moscovici's (1969) colour perception experiment overturned the traditional majority influence paradigm in social psychology. In a task judging the colour of blue slides, two groups of 6 participants each (4 genuine + 2 confederates) were tested. In the experimental group, confederates consistently and incorrectly called blue slides "green"; in the control group, confederates always answered correctly. Results: 32% of experimental participants answered "green" at least once, compared to near zero in the control group, proving that minorities can exert influence provided they maintain consistency. Moscovici proposed that minority influence operates through conversion theory: majority influence brings compliance through a public comparison process, whereas minority influence triggers cognitive conflict and a validation process leading to internalisation, producing lasting attitude change even if delayed. Minority influence is the primary engine of social change: from historical civil rights and feminist movements to contemporary environmental activism, consistent and committed minorities gradually shift majority social norms via the snowball effect. Social cryptoamnesia explains why people eventually accept changed views while forgetting their minority origins.

Top 5 Common Mistakes
Mistake 1: confusing conformity with obedience. Conformity requires no explicit command, it is spontaneous behaviour change under social pressure; obedience involves a response to direct orders with a clear authority hierarchy. Asch's participants were conforming; Milgram's participants were obeying. Mistake 2: mixing up NSI and ISI. NSI is emotionally driven (wanting to be liked); ISI is cognitively driven (wanting to be correct). The key test: if a participant's private opinion also changed, internalisation via ISI has occurred; if only public behaviour changed, it is compliance via NSI. Mistake 3: applying Milgram's Agency Theory to all obedience situations. Remember that agency theory only applies when there is a clear hierarchical authority structure; it cannot directly explain peer pressure or conformity. Mistake 4: forgetting to write researchers' dates. The Edexcel mark scheme requires citing both researcher name and year; missing the year directly loses AO1 marks. Mistake 5: listing evaluations without explaining them. Saying "Asch's study lacks ecological validity" is only worth half a mark; you must explain why (judging lines differs from everyday behaviour) to get full marks.
