Organic Chemistry is one of the most challenging yet logically rewarding modules in IGCSE CAIE Chemistry. Many students feel lost when they first encounter concepts like "carbon chains," "functional groups," and "addition reactions," believing organic chemistry is just a pile of equations to memorize by rote. The truth is quite the opposite — once you build a structured knowledge framework and understand how functional groups determine chemical properties, organic chemistry becomes one of the most reliable scoring sections in the entire syllabus. This article will systematically guide you through the core topics, common exam question types, and effective revision strategies to help you excel in the exam.

At its core, organic chemistry is the chemistry of carbon compounds. With four electrons in its outer shell (electronic configuration 2,4), carbon can form four covalent bonds. This unique electronic structure enables carbon atoms to link together into long chains, branched structures, and rings, forming the molecular foundation of living matter and modern materials industries. By comparison, although silicon — carbon's group mate on the periodic table — can also form four bonds, silicon-silicon bonds are far less stable than carbon-carbon bonds, which is the very chemical reason carbon-based life exists. The organic families covered in IGCSE include alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, and carboxylic acids, plus plastics and synthetic fibres formed from alkene monomers through addition polymerisation. Mastering the interconversion relationships among these families is the first step to excelling in organic chemistry.

A homologous series is a family of compounds with the same functional group and similar chemical properties, where each successive member differs by one CH2 unit. For example, methane CH4, ethane C2H6, propane C3H8, and butane C4H10 all belong to the alkane homologous series — they share the same chemical properties such as combustion and substitution reactions, while physical properties like boiling point gradually increase with molecular mass. Understanding the homologous series concept allows you to learn by analogy: once you understand methane's reactions, you can predict ethane's and propane's. A functional group is the atom or group of atoms that determines the chemical properties of an organic compound — it is the key to classification and reaction prediction. The functional groups required for IGCSE are: the C=C double bond determining alkene properties, the -OH hydroxyl group determining alcohol properties, and the -COOH carboxyl group determining carboxylic acid properties. Focusing on functional groups rather than memorizing each compound in isolation is the core methodology for efficient organic chemistry learning.

Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons containing only single C-C bonds, with the general formula CnH2n+2. IGCSE focuses on the first four members: methane, ethane, propane, and butane. The molecular geometry of alkanes is tetrahedral, with bond angles of approximately 109.5 degrees. Alkanes are relatively stable chemically, with two main reaction types: combustion and substitution. In complete combustion, alkanes react with sufficient oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water, releasing substantial thermal energy — they are the main components of natural gas and LPG. Incomplete combustion occurs when oxygen supply is insufficient, producing carbon monoxide or elemental carbon soot; exams frequently ask you to deduce combustion conditions from given products. Substitution is the characteristic reaction of alkanes: under ultraviolet light, halogen molecules such as chlorine and bromine undergo homolytic fission to produce free radicals, which then gradually replace hydrogen atoms in the alkane, yielding haloalkanes and hydrogen halides. Substitution occurs stepwise and the product is typically a mixture. Here is an extremely important experimental exam point: alkanes do NOT decolourise bromine water. Bromine water is the characteristic test reagent for carbon-carbon unsaturation — only unsaturated compounds with double or triple bonds can undergo addition with bromine to decolourise it. Alkanes, having only single bonds with no π bonds available for addition, leave bromine water unchanged in its orange-yellow colour. This distinction experiment is a high-frequency topic in Paper 6 practical exams and must be thoroughly memorized.

Alkenes contain a C=C double bond, have the general formula CnH2n, and are unsaturated hydrocarbons. IGCSE focuses on the structure and addition reactions of ethene. The C=C double bond is not two identical bonds: it consists of one strong sigma bond and one weak pi bond. The sigma bond is formed by head-on overlap of sp2 hybrid orbitals from the two carbon atoms and is very stable; the pi bond is formed by sideways overlap of unhybridized p orbitals, with electron density distributed above and below the molecular plane, has lower bond energy, and is easily broken. It is this reactive pi bond that enables alkenes to undergo a series of characteristic addition reactions. Addition reaction types for alkenes include: catalytic hydrogenation, where hydrogen molecules add across the double bond under a nickel catalyst at around 150 degrees to produce the corresponding alkane — this is the basic principle behind industrial conversion of vegetable oils to margarine; halogen addition, where alkenes react with bromine or chlorine at room temperature without needing a catalyst or light — this is the essential difference in reaction conditions between alkenes and alkanes; addition of hydrogen halides to form haloalkanes; and hydration, where water adds across the double bond under a phosphoric acid catalyst at high temperature and pressure to produce an alcohol — an important industrial method for ethanol production. The most classic exam scenario is the decolourisation of bromine water by alkenes: when ethene gas is bubbled through orange-yellow bromine water, the solution rapidly turns colourless. The chemical reaction is C2H4 plus Br2 forming C2H4Br2, 1,2-dibromoethane. This reaction serves both as the characteristic identification test for alkenes and as the classic demonstration of the addition reaction mechanism. If an exam question asks "how to distinguish chemically between ethane and ethene," the standard answer is the bromine water test.

Alcohols contain the -OH hydroxyl functional group, have the general formula CnH2n+1OH, and can be viewed as derivatives of water where one hydrogen atom is replaced by an alkyl group. IGCSE focuses primarily on ethanol — its production methods and chemical properties. Ethanol can be produced by two industrial methods, making this classic material for "compare and contrast" exam questions. The first is fermentation: using sugars such as glucose or sucrose as raw materials, under the catalysis of enzymes produced by yeast, at 30-40 degrees under anaerobic conditions, fermenting to produce ethanol and carbon dioxide. The reaction equation is C6H12O6 fermenting to 2C2H5OH plus 2CO2. Advantages of fermentation include using renewable biomass feedstock and mild reaction conditions requiring no high-pressure equipment; disadvantages are low product concentration — only about 12% to 15% ethanol solution is obtained — requiring fractional distillation to purify, and a relatively slow reaction rate. The second is ethene hydration: using ethene from petroleum cracking as feedstock, reacting with steam under a phosphoric acid catalyst at 300 degrees and 60-70 atmospheres to directly produce ethanol. Advantages of hydration include fast reaction rate, high yield, and high product purity; disadvantages include using non-renewable petroleum feedstock, demanding reaction conditions requiring high-pressure equipment, and high energy consumption. Exams frequently ask you to compare these methods across dimensions such as raw material source, reaction conditions, yield, and sustainability. Always use precise scientific comparison language with specific supporting details in your answers. Chemical reactions of ethanol include: combustion — ethanol burns with a blue flame in air, producing CO2 and H2O, making it a clean renewable fuel; reaction with sodium metal, producing sodium ethoxide and hydrogen gas, with the reaction being much milder than sodium with water, indicating the O-H bond in the alcohol hydroxyl is harder to break than in water; oxidation — under acidic potassium manganate(VII) or acidic potassium dichromate(VI), ethanol is first oxidized to ethanal then further to ethanoic acid, with observable colour change from orange to green for dichromate; and esterification — ethanol reacts with carboxylic acids under concentrated sulfuric acid catalysis with heating to produce esters and water.

Carboxylic acids contain the -COOH carboxyl functional group, with the general formula CnH2n+1COOH. The carboxyl group consists of a carbonyl C=O and a hydroxyl -OH; there is a conjugation effect between these two groups that makes the O-H bond in the carboxyl more readily ionizable to release a proton than the O-H bond in alcohols, hence carboxylic acids exhibit acidic properties. IGCSE focuses on ethanoic acid. Carboxylic acids are weak acids, only partially ionizing in water, but this is sufficient for them to undergo a series of typical acid reactions: with reactive metals such as magnesium and zinc to produce carboxylate salts and hydrogen gas; neutralization with bases such as sodium hydroxide to give carboxylate salts and water; and reaction with carbonates or hydrogencarbonates to produce carboxylate salts, carbon dioxide, and water — this reaction produces visible effervescence and is the classic experimental method for distinguishing carboxylic acids from alcohols. Within the organic chemistry framework, the most important reaction of carboxylic acids is esterification. Esterification is the reversible condensation reaction between a carboxylic acid and an alcohol under concentrated sulfuric acid catalysis with heating, producing an ester and water. Note that "condensation" refers to two molecules combining with the elimination of a small molecule, water in this case. The reaction conditions require concentrated sulfuric acid as catalyst and dehydrating agent, plus heating under reflux. The dual role of concentrated sulfuric acid is a classic IGCSE exam point: it acts as a catalyst to lower activation energy and speed up the reaction, and as a dehydrating agent to absorb the water produced, shifting the equilibrium forward to increase ester yield. Esterification is reversible, so use a reversible arrow rather than a single arrow when writing the equation. The esters produced typically have pleasant fruity smells — for example, ethyl ethanoate has a pear-like aroma, methyl butanoate smells of apples — and are therefore widely used in food flavourings and the perfume industry. Exams often ask you to write the structural formula and name of an ester given the acid and alcohol; remember the naming rule: alkyl alkanoate, with the alcohol-derived part first and the acid-derived part second in English nomenclature.

Polymers are macromolecules formed by linking together many repeating structural units called monomers through covalent bonds. IGCSE mainly covers addition polymerisation — a chemical reaction that converts unsaturated monomers containing C=C double bonds into saturated polymer chains. During addition polymerisation, the π bonds in monomer molecules break, and the monomers link together through σ bonds to form long chains. No small molecule by-products are formed, and the empirical formula of the polymer is identical to that of the monomer. Key polymer examples to master include: poly(ethene) or polythene — polymerized from ethene monomers, the most common thermoplastic, widely used for plastic bags, cling film, and plastic bottles; poly(propene) — polymerized from propene, tougher than polythene, used for ropes, carpet fibres, and car bumpers; poly(chloroethene) or PVC — polymerized from chloroethene, rigid PVC used for pipes and window frames, and with added plasticizers becomes flexible PVC for cable insulation and artificial leather; poly(phenylethene) or polystyrene — polymerized from styrene, used for disposable cutlery, CD cases, and packaging foam. High-frequency exam topics include: drawing the polymer structure from a given monomer structural formula — remember to open the double bond, bracket the repeating unit, and write the subscript n for the degree of polymerisation; deducing the monomer structure from a given polymer repeat unit; and remembering to restore the double bond. Additionally, the environmental issues of polymers have become compulsory content in recent years: most addition polymers are derived from petroleum, are non-biodegradable, can persist in the environment for hundreds of years, causing severe "white pollution." Solutions include: reducing single-use plastics, recycling and reusing, developing biodegradable plastics such as PLA polylactic acid, and incineration for energy recovery. We recommend creating a four-column reference table of "polymer name — monomer — uses — environmental issues" during revision for quick and accurate exam responses.

IUPAC nomenclature is an essential foundational skill guaranteed to appear in IGCSE Organic Chemistry exams. The systematic name of an organic compound consists of three parts: prefixes indicating the type and position of substituents such as methyl, ethyl, chloro, bromo; the parent part indicating the number of carbon atoms in the longest continuous chain, with one to four carbons named meth-, eth-, prop-, but- respectively; and suffixes indicating the compound class or functional group type, with -ane for alkanes, -ene for alkenes, -ol for alcohols, and -oic acid for carboxylic acids. The naming mnemonic is "select chain, number, locate, name": step one, find the longest continuous carbon chain containing the functional group as the parent chain; step two, number the carbon atoms starting from the end nearest the functional group — for alkenes the double bond must receive the lowest possible number; step three, determine the names and position numbers of substituents; step four, list substituents in alphabetical order, using di-, tri- prefixes for multiple identical substituents, with commas between position numbers and hyphens between numbers and names. Common mark-losing mistakes: forgetting to provide position numbers for functional groups such as the double bond or hydroxyl, writing substituents in order of position number rather than alphabetical order, providing only one position number for multiple identical substituents, and omitting commas between numbers or hyphens between numbers and letters. Special reminder: IUPAC nomenclature appears in both Paper 2 multiple-choice and Paper 4 structured questions. These are essentially free marks — follow the steps methodically and you cannot go wrong. Make absolutely sure you score full marks here.

To conquer IGCSE Organic Chemistry, understanding the exam logic behind the questions matters more than the sheer number of questions practiced. In Paper 2 multiple-choice, compound identification questions give you a structural formula or name and ask you to determine the homologous series. The key is finding the functional group — C=C means alkene, -OH means alcohol, -COOH means carboxylic acid. Homologous series judgment questions ask whether two compounds belong to the same series; check two things: whether the functional groups are the same, and whether the molecular formula difference is an integer multiple of CH2. Reaction type questions require identifying whether a given reaction is substitution, addition, oxidation, or esterification; grasp the characteristic of each: substitution replaces atoms, addition opens a double bond, oxidation adds oxygen or removes hydrogen, esterification combines acid and alcohol to form ester plus water. In Paper 4 structured questions and Paper 6 practical questions, organic synthesis pathway design is the most comprehensive question type. The question typically gives a starting material and a target product, asking you to design reasonable conversion steps and state the reagents and conditions for each step. The solution approach for these questions is to work backwards from the target product: esters come from esterification of acid and alcohol, acids come from oxidation of alcohols, alcohols come from hydration of alkenes, alkenes come from cracking of alkanes. Building this clear conversion pathway in your mind allows you to solve any synthesis question. Experimental condition description questions require precise memorization of key figures: fermentation at 30-40 degrees; catalytic hydrogenation with nickel catalyst at approximately 150 degrees; ethene hydration at 300 degrees and 60-70 atmospheres; esterification with concentrated sulfuric acid under heating and reflux. For equation writing questions, pay attention to balancing and clearly annotating reaction conditions above the arrow. For polymer structure drawing questions, always draw the square brackets and subscript n. For comparison questions such as comparing fermentation and hydration, or addition and condensation polymerisation, always use structured comparison language, comparing dimension by dimension with specific details supporting each point.

Organic chemistry knowledge points are highly interconnected; isolated memorization is the worst possible approach. Many students spend enormous amounts of time memorizing reaction equations, yet freeze when faced with a slightly modified question. The root cause is failure to build a logical network between knowledge points. Our recommendation is to create a "functional group — reaction — conditions — products" mind map, threading scattered knowledge into an organic whole. The core of IGCSE Organic Chemistry can be distilled into one conversion pathway: fractional distillation of petroleum yields alkane fractions; alkanes undergo catalytic cracking to produce alkenes and hydrogen; alkenes undergo hydration addition to form alcohols; alcohols are oxidized by oxidizing agents to carboxylic acids; carboxylic acids and alcohols undergo esterification under concentrated sulfuric acid catalysis to form esters. See — from the simplest alkanes to fruity-smelling esters, every conversion step has its logic, with conditions that vary but follow patterns. Once you thread all your learned reactions together along this main line, your knowledge is no longer scattered fragments. Beyond building the framework, hands-on practice is equally important. Organic chemistry exams contain numerous questions requiring you to draw structures — drawing the structure of a named compound, drawing the structure of a reaction product, drawing the structure of a polymer. If you only think about these in your head without actually drawing them, you are very likely to make mistakes under exam conditions. We recommend spending 15 minutes every day specifically practicing structural formula drawing, from methane all the way to polystyrene, until you can draw them accurately without thinking. Equation writing also requires deliberate practice, paying special attention to balancing, condition annotation, and correct use of the reversible arrow. Finally, compiling a "colour change" topical notebook is extremely useful: bromine water from orange-yellow to colourless indicates the presence of unsaturated bonds; potassium manganate(VII) from purple to colourless also indicates unsaturation or easily oxidized substances; potassium dichromate(VI) from orange to green indicates oxidation of an alcohol to a carboxylic acid. These colour changes are the core scoring points in Paper 6 practical questions.
