Electrolysis: Two Cells, Two Worlds

When you hear "electrolysis" in IGCSE Chemistry, you are really dealing with two fundamentally different devices: the electrolytic cell and the simple (galvanic) cell. CAIE examiners love to ask you to compare them : and for good reason. The electrolytic cell uses electricity to force a non-spontaneous chemical reaction to happen. You push electrons in from an external power supply (the battery with the long line on the positive side and the short fat line on the negative side), and chemical changes occur at the electrodes. The simple cell does the exact opposite: a spontaneous chemical reaction produces electricity that flows OUT of the cell. Think of the electrolytic cell as a chemical factory that consumes energy, and the simple cell as a battery that releases it. In the exam, the giveaway is always the power supply : if you see a battery symbol in the circuit, it is electrolysis. No battery? It is a simple cell.

Anode vs Cathode: Where the Action Happens

This is the single most confused pair in all of electrochemistry, and CAIE exploits it in multiple-choice questions every year. In an electrolytic cell, the anode is the positive electrode connected to the positive terminal of the power supply. Oxidation always happens at the anode : anions (negative ions) are attracted to it and lose electrons. The cathode is the negative electrode, connected to the negative terminal. Reduction always happens at the cathode : cations (positive ions) are attracted to it and gain electrons. A mnemonic that works for both cell types: AN OX and RED CAT : ANode is where OXidation happens, REDuction happens at the CAThode. But be careful: in a simple cell, the signs FLIP. The anode becomes negative and the cathode becomes positive. This is because in a simple cell, electrons are PRODUCED at the anode (oxidation) and CONSUMED at the cathode (reduction), so electron flow determines polarity. Write AN OX RED CAT on the top of your exam paper the moment you sit down : it will save you at least two marks.

Molten Electrolysis: Pure and Simple

Molten electrolysis is the cleaner of the two electrolysis scenarios. When you melt an ionic compound : say, lead(II) bromide (PbBr₂) : the ions become free to move. There is no water to complicate things. The only species present are Pb²⁺ cations and Br⁻ anions. At the cathode (reduction): Pb²⁺ + 2e⁻ → Pb (grey lead metal deposits). At the anode (oxidation): 2Br⁻ → Br₂ + 2e⁻ (red-brown bromine gas bubbles off). CAIE Paper 4 often asks you to write these half-equations with state symbols, so memorise the format: Pb²⁺(l) + 2e⁻ → Pb(l) for the cathode and 2Br⁻(l) → Br₂(g) + 2e⁻ for the anode. The overall equation is simply PbBr₂(l) → Pb(l) + Br₂(g). Other classic molten electrolysis examples include NaCl (sodium metal at cathode, chlorine gas at anode) and Al₂O₃ dissolved in cryolite (aluminium at cathode, oxygen at anode : but this one reacts with the carbon anode, producing CO₂ instead).

Aqueous Electrolysis: Water Joins the Game

Here is where IGCSE electrochemistry gets interesting : and where most marks are lost. In aqueous electrolysis, water molecules are ALSO present alongside the dissolved ions. Water can be oxidised at the anode (4OH⁻ → O₂ + 2H₂O + 4e⁻) and reduced at the cathode (2H₂O + 2e⁻ → H₂ + 2OH⁻). So you now have a competition at each electrode. At the cathode: the cation that is LOWER in the reactivity series gets discharged first. H⁺ ions (from water) count as a cation and sit between lead and copper in the series. So if you electrolyse aqueous NaCl, Na⁺ is too reactive : H⁺ from water gets reduced instead, producing H₂ gas. At the anode: the anion that is easier to oxidise gets discharged. The order is: halide ions (Cl⁻, Br⁻, I⁻) discharge before OH⁻ from water, which discharges before SO₄²⁻ and NO₃⁻ (these never discharge in aqueous solution). So for aqueous NaCl: cathode gives H₂ (not Na), anode gives Cl₂ (not O₂). For aqueous CuSO₄: cathode gives Cu (copper is below hydrogen), anode gives O₂ (SO₄²⁻ does not discharge). CAIE will test you on exactly these four aqueous combinations: NaCl, CuSO₄, dilute H₂SO₄, and AgNO₃. Know them cold.

顺序是:卤素离子(Cl⁻、Br⁻、I⁻)先于水中的OH⁻放电,OH⁻又先于SO₄²⁻和NO₃⁻(这两种在水溶液中永不放电)。

Reactive vs Inert Electrodes: When the Anode Itself Reacts

Most IGCSE electrolysis questions assume inert electrodes : typically graphite (carbon) or platinum. But CAIE also tests reactive (active) electrodes, and this is a compare-template goldmine. With inert electrodes, the electrode itself does not participate; it merely provides a surface for electron transfer. With reactive electrodes : copper electrodes in CuSO₄ electrolysis being the classic example : the anode itself dissolves. At the copper anode: Cu(s) → Cu²⁺(aq) + 2e⁻ (the anode erodes away). At the cathode: Cu²⁺(aq) + 2e⁻ → Cu(s) (fresh copper plates onto the cathode). The net effect is copper being transferred from anode to cathode, purifying it. This is the principle behind both copper refining and electroplating. The key exam distinction: if the question says "copper electrodes" in CuSO₄ solution, the anode mass decreases and cathode mass increases. If it says "carbon electrodes" in CuSO₄ solution, the anode produces O₂ gas and the solution turns from blue to colourless as Cu²⁺ ions are consumed. Two completely different outcomes from the same electrolyte : just by changing the electrode material.

Electroplating: Making Things Shiny

Electroplating is a direct application of reactive-electrode electrolysis. The object to be plated is made the cathode : it attracts the metal cations and gets coated. The plating metal (silver, chromium, nickel, or copper) is made the anode : it dissolves to replenish the metal ions in solution. The electrolyte must contain ions of the plating metal. For silver-plating a spoon: the spoon is the cathode, a pure silver bar is the anode, and the electrolyte is silver nitrate (AgNO₃) solution. At the cathode: Ag⁺ + e⁻ → Ag (silver deposits on the spoon). At the anode: Ag → Ag⁺ + e⁻ (the silver bar dissolves). The concentration of Ag⁺ in the electrolyte stays constant throughout : a fact CAIE likes to ask about in Paper 2 multiple-choice. Common IGCSE electroplating examples: chromium-plating car bumpers (corrosion resistance + shine), silver-plating cutlery (appearance), and copper-plating plastic for printed circuit boards (after coating the plastic with graphite to make it conductive first).

在阴极:Ag⁺ + e⁻ → Ag(银沉积在勺子上)。

Aluminium Extraction: Electrolysis at Industrial Scale

The extraction of aluminium from its ore (bauxite, Al₂O₃) is arguably the most important industrial application of electrolysis in the IGCSE syllabus. Aluminium oxide has a melting point of over 2000°C : far too high for practical electrolysis. The solution is to dissolve Al₂O₃ in molten cryolite (Na₃AlF₆), which brings the operating temperature down to about 950°C. This is a huge energy saving and a classic CAIE 3-mark question: "Why is cryolite used?" : to lower the melting point of aluminium oxide and reduce energy costs. The electrolysis cell has a steel container lined with graphite, which acts as the cathode. Graphite anodes dip into the molten electrolyte from above. At the cathode: Al³⁺ + 3e⁻ → Al (molten aluminium collects at the bottom and is tapped off). At the anode: 2O²⁻ → O₂ + 4e⁻. But here is the crucial industrial detail: the oxygen produced at the anode reacts with the graphite (carbon) anodes at the high temperature, forming CO₂ : so the anodes are gradually consumed and must be replaced regularly. The overall simplified equation is 2Al₂O₃ → 4Al + 3O₂. CAIE often links this to the reactivity series: aluminium is too reactive to be extracted by carbon reduction (unlike iron in the blast furnace), so electrolysis is the only viable method.

在阴极:Al³⁺ + 3e⁻ → Al(熔融铝聚集在底部并被导出)。

Selective Discharge and the Reactivity Series

The concept of selective discharge governs everything that happens in aqueous electrolysis : and it is entirely built on the reactivity series. At the cathode, the rule is simple: the LOWER a metal is in the reactivity series, the EASIER its ions are discharged. This is why Cu²⁺ discharges before H⁺, and H⁺ discharges before Na⁺. But CAIE likes to phrase it in terms of electron affinity: cations of less reactive metals have a stronger tendency to accept electrons, so they are reduced preferentially. At the anode, the competition is based on ease of oxidation. Halide ions (Cl⁻, Br⁻, I⁻) are easier to oxidise than OH⁻ from water, which is easier to oxidise than SO₄²⁻ or NO₃⁻. But there is an important CONCENTRATION EFFECT that many students miss: in CONCENTRATED NaCl solution, Cl⁻ ions are discharged at the anode giving Cl₂ gas. But in DILUTE NaCl solution, OH⁻ ions from water may compete more effectively, and you get O₂ gas instead. CAIE Paper 4 often specifies "concentrated aqueous sodium chloride" or "dilute sodium chloride solution" to test whether you know this distinction. When you see "concentrated" in the question, the halide wins at the anode. When you see "dilute" without a halide present, expect O₂ from water.

卤素离子(Cl⁻、Br⁻、I⁻)比水中的OH⁻更容易被氧化,而OH⁻又比SO₄²⁻或NO₃⁻容易氧化。

Half-Equations: The Examiner's Favourite

If you can write a balanced half-equation with correct state symbols, you have already secured a significant portion of the electrochemistry marks. CAIE expects you to balance atoms AND charge. Every half-equation must have electrons on one side: on the right for oxidation (loss of electrons) and on the left for reduction (gain of electrons). The six half-equations you absolutely must know for CAIE: (1) 2Cl⁻ → Cl₂ + 2e⁻ (anode, halide oxidation), (2) 4OH⁻ → O₂ + 2H₂O + 4e⁻ (anode, water oxidation), (3) 2H⁺ + 2e⁻ → H₂ (cathode, acid reduction), (4) Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻ → Cu (cathode, metal deposition), (5) Ag⁺ + e⁻ → Ag (cathode, silver deposition), (6) Al³⁺ + 3e⁻ → Al (cathode, aluminium extraction). Notice that the number of electrons always matches the charge on the ion: Cu²⁺ needs 2e⁻, Al³⁺ needs 3e⁻. This is your built-in self-check. When combining half-equations, multiply each by the appropriate factor so the electrons cancel : for the electrolysis of CuCl₂: multiply Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻ → Cu by 1 and 2Cl⁻ → Cl₂ + 2e⁻ by 1, then add: Cu²⁺ + 2Cl⁻ → Cu + Cl₂.

Exam Strategy for CAIE Electrochemistry CAIE

CAIE Paper 2 (Multiple Choice, 40 questions in 45 minutes) typically has 3-4 electrochemistry questions. The most common traps: confusing anode/cathode signs between cell types, forgetting that H⁺ and OH⁻ from water participate in aqueous electrolysis, and mixing up the products of concentrated vs dilute solutions. Read every question twice : if you see "molten", there is NO water and the products are always the pure elements. If you see "aqueous", check for halide ions first (they determine the anode product), then check the metal's position relative to hydrogen in the reactivity series (it determines the cathode product). Paper 4 (Theory, 1 hour 15 minutes) often features a structured 6-8 mark electrolysis question with a diagram. You will be asked to label the anode and cathode, predict products at each electrode, and write half-equations with state symbols. Draw the electron flow on the diagram with arrows (electrons flow FROM anode TO cathode in the external circuit : remember this direction, it is opposite to conventional current). Paper 6 (Alternative to Practical) may ask you to describe the observations during electrolysis: colour changes, gas tests (chlorine bleaches damp litmus, hydrogen gives a squeaky pop, oxygen relights a glowing splint), and electrode mass changes.
