Circuit Basics & Ohm's Law

Understanding the essential difference between current, voltage, and resistance is the first step to mastering electricity. Current measures the rate at which charge flows through a cross-section of a conductor — how many coulombs of charge pass per second — measured in amperes (A). Think of current as the flow rate of water in a pipe: the higher the flow rate, the more water passes through per unit time. Potential difference (p.d.), often called voltage, measures the energy available to drive charge around the circuit; more precisely, it is the energy per unit charge, measured in volts (V) — joules per coulomb. If current is like water flow, voltage is like the pressure difference provided by a pump: the greater the pressure difference, the stronger the driving force. Resistance quantifies how much a component opposes the flow of charge, measured in ohms. The higher the resistance, the smaller the current for a given voltage. These three quantities are precisely related by Ohm's Law.

根据 V = I x R,变形得 R = V / I = 6 / 0.5 = 12 欧姆。

Ohm's Law — V = I x R — is the foundational quantitative relationship in electricity. It states that the current through an ohmic conductor is directly proportional to the potential difference across it, provided temperature remains constant. Example: a resistor has a p.d. of 6V across it and a current of 0.5A through it. Using R = V / I = 6 / 0.5 = 12 ohms. However, not all components obey Ohm's Law. A filament lamp's resistance increases with temperature because the metal ions vibrate more vigorously, scattering electrons more strongly — hence the I-V graph curves rather than being a straight line. A diode only allows current in one direction: very low resistance when forward-biased, extremely high resistance when reverse-biased. A classic exam question shows four I-V characteristic curves and asks you to identify which belongs to a fixed resistor, a filament lamp, and a diode. Memory aid: straight line through the origin = ohmic conductor; curve that flattens = filament lamp; conducts in one direction only = diode.

You must recognise and accurately draw the standard circuit symbols for: cell (long line positive, short line negative), battery (two or more cells in series), switch (breakable line segment), lamp (circle with a cross), fixed resistor (rectangle), variable resistor (rectangle with diagonal arrow), diode (triangle pointing to a vertical line — triangle direction shows allowed current), LED (diode symbol with outward arrows for light emission), ammeter (circle with A inside, always connected in series), voltmeter (circle with V inside, always connected in parallel), fuse (rectangle with wavy line), thermistor (resistor symbol with temperature-dependence annotation), and LDR (resistor symbol with light-dependence annotation). Every year, students lose easy marks by drawing symbols incorrectly. Spending fifteen minutes before the exam practising all symbols from memory is well worth the effort.

Series & Parallel Circuits

解题步骤:第一步,R_total = 4 + 6 + 10 = 20 欧姆;第二步,I = V / R_total = 10 / 20 = 0.5A;第三步,V1 = I x R1 = 0.5 x 4 = 2V,V2 = 0.5 x 6 = 3V,V3 = 0.5 x 10 = 5V。

Series circuits are the most frequently tested circuit structure in GCSE electricity calculations. All components are connected end-to-end in a single loop, so current has only one path. Three key rules follow: First, current is the same everywhere — no matter where you insert the ammeter, the reading is identical: I_total = I1 = I2 = I3. Second, total p.d. equals the sum of individual p.d.'s — the battery's voltage is divided among the resistors in proportion to their resistance: V_total = V1 + V2 + V3, with larger resistors receiving a larger share. Third, total resistance equals the sum of individual resistances: R_total = R1 + R2 + R3, meaning adding more resistors in series increases total resistance and reduces circuit current. Classic example: three resistors of 4 ohms, 6 ohms, and 10 ohms are connected in series to a 10V supply. Calculate the circuit current and the p.d. across each resistor. Step 1: R_total = 4 + 6 + 10 = 20 ohms. Step 2: I = V / R_total = 10 / 20 = 0.5A. Step 3: V1 = I x R1 = 0.5 x 4 = 2V, V2 = 0.5 x 6 = 3V, V3 = 0.5 x 10 = 5V. Verification: 2 + 3 + 5 = 10V, matching the supply voltage.

In parallel circuits, each branch connects independently across the supply, giving each branch its own current path. The three rules contrast with series circuits: First, the p.d. across each branch is the same and equals the supply voltage — V1 = V2 = V3 = V_supply. Regardless of what is in each branch, the voltage across every branch is identical. Second, total current equals the sum of branch currents — I_total = I1 + I2 + I3 — because the total current leaving the positive terminal splits at junction points into the branches and rejoins before returning to the negative terminal. Third, the reciprocal of total resistance equals the sum of the reciprocals of branch resistances — 1/R_total = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3. The key conclusion: total resistance in parallel is always less than the smallest individual branch resistance. This is because parallel branches provide additional paths for current, reducing overall opposition. Classic exam trap: two identical resistors in parallel give half the individual resistance. Example: two 6-ohm resistors in parallel — 1/R_total = 1/6 + 1/6 = 2/6, so R_total = 3 ohms. Three 6-ohm resistors in parallel give R_total = 2 ohms.

A more discriminating exam question type involves mixed circuits with both series and parallel sections, asking you to analyse how ammeter and voltmeter readings change when a switch is closed. Follow four steps: First, draw the equivalent circuit before and after closing the switch — which components are active before, and what new path is created after. Second, determine how total resistance changes — closing a switch that adds a parallel branch decreases total resistance; shorting out a resistor also decreases total resistance. Third, deduce the change in total current from the change in total resistance — with supply voltage constant, lower total resistance means higher total current. Fourth, analyse individual component voltage and current — for parallel branches, voltage stays the same; for series sections, increased current means increased p.d., which affects voltmeter readings across parallel-connected components. The key to unlocking these problems is always "which way does the total resistance change." Once you have that, all subsequent changes follow logically.

Electrical Power & Energy

GCSE Edexcel 考试要求掌握的功率公式有三个:P = V x I(功率等于电压乘以电流)、P = I squared x R(功率等于电流的平方乘以电阻)以及 P = V squared over R(功率等于电压平方除以电阻)。

Power measures how much energy a component transfers per second, in watts (W) — joules per second. GCSE Edexcel requires three power equations: P = V x I, P = I squared x R, and P = V squared over R. Each has its ideal use case: when voltage and current are given directly, use P = V x I; when current and resistance are given but voltage is unknown, P = I squared x R is quickest; when voltage and resistance are given but current is unknown, P = V squared over R is most efficient. Classic example: a bulb is labelled "230V, 60W." What is its operating current? 60 = 230 x I, so I = 60 / 230 = 0.26A. What is its resistance? R = V / I = 230 / 0.26 or approximately 885 ohms. Alternatively, R = V squared / P = 230 x 230 / 60, giving about 881 ohms.

电能的三个计算公式:E = P x t(能量等于功率乘以时间)、E = Q x V(能量等于电荷量乘以电压)以及 E = I x V x t(能量等于电流乘以电压再乘以时间)。

Three energy equations: E = P x t, E = Q x V, and E = I x V x t. In all three, time must be in seconds (s) — this is the detail students most often overlook. If a question gives minutes or hours, convert to seconds first. Energy is expressed in joules (J) or kilowatt-hours (kWh). The joule is the SI unit and the default output of all formula calculations. The kilowatt-hour is the unit used by electricity companies for billing: 1 kWh is the energy consumed by a 1 kW appliance running for 1 hour. The conversion between them: 1 kWh = 1000 W x 3600 s = 3,600,000 J, or 3.6 x 10 to the power 6 J. In exam questions involving electricity bills, you usually need to convert kWh to joules or vice versa. Getting this conversion wrong means the entire answer is incorrect.

考题中如果出现"calculate the energy transferred"字样,你需要在功率的基础上乘以时间;如果出现"calculate the power of the appliance",你直接用 P = V x I 或其他功率公式即可。

Many students struggle to distinguish power from energy. An analogy helps: power is like a car's speedometer — it tells you how fast energy is being transferred right now. Energy is like the odometer — it tells you how much energy has been transferred in total. Power is instantaneous; energy is cumulative. If an exam question says "calculate the energy transferred," you need to multiply power by time. If it says "calculate the power of the appliance," use P = V x I or another power formula directly. When comparing the energy consumption of two appliances, consider both power and usage time. Example: a 2000W kettle boiling water for 3 minutes versus a 100W light bulb on for 1 hour — which uses more energy? Kettle: E = 2000 x 180 = 360,000 J. Bulb: E = 100 x 3600 = 360,000 J. They are equal.

Mains Electricity & Safety

Mains electricity is alternating current (AC). UK mains specification: 230V, 50Hz. 50Hz means the current direction reverses 100 times per second (50 forward + 50 reverse = 50 full cycles). Batteries and solar panels provide direct current (DC), where current flows in one direction only. On an oscilloscope screen, AC appears as a sine wave — a curve oscillating periodically above and below the zero line. The peak-to-peak voltage and frequency can be read directly from the screen. DC appears as a flat horizontal line offset from zero; the offset distance represents the voltage magnitude. A common exam question shows an oscilloscope trace and asks you to read the peak voltage, frequency, or period. Method: count the number of vertical divisions from zero to the peak, then multiply by the Y-axis volts-per-division setting to get peak voltage. Count the horizontal divisions for one full cycle, multiply by the time-base setting (milliseconds per division) to get the period T, then f = 1 / T.

UK domestic plugs use a standard three-wire cable system: Live wire (brown insulation), Neutral wire (blue insulation), and Earth wire (yellow-green striped insulation). Their potentials and functions are entirely different. The live wire has a 230V AC potential relative to the ground at the power station — it is the source of energy, and touching it can be fatal. The neutral wire is earthed at the local substation, with a potential close to 0V, providing a low-potential reference point that completes the circuit. The earth wire connects the appliance's metal casing to a physical grounding rod in the ground; normally no current flows through it. The safety mechanism: if an internal fault causes the live wire to touch the metal casing, a massive current flows through the low-resistance earth wire to the ground. This large fault current instantly blows the fuse in series with the live wire, disconnecting the circuit and isolating the metal casing from the 230V live supply, protecting the user from electric shock. This is called "earthing." Double-insulated appliances (symbol: two nested squares) have casings made entirely of insulating materials like plastic — even if an internal fault occurs, the user cannot touch any live part. They do not need an earth wire; the plug has only live and neutral wires.

A fuse is a thin metal wire connected in series with the live wire. When the current through it exceeds its rating, the wire heats up, melts, and permanently breaks the circuit. The fuse rating should be slightly higher than the appliance's normal operating current — too low and it blows during normal use; too high and it does not blow during a fault, defeating the purpose. Common ratings are 3A and 13A. A 230V, 800W microwave draws I = P / V = 800 / 230 or approximately 3.5A in normal operation. A 13A fuse is appropriate because a 3A fuse would blow during normal use. A circuit breaker performs the same function but is resettable — when excessive current is detected, an internal electromagnet triggers a switch to trip. After clearing the fault, you can manually reset it without replacing any component.

Static Electricity

Static electricity refers to the accumulation of electric charge on the surface of an object without flowing. The fundamental cause is the transfer of electrons. When two different insulating materials are rubbed together, atoms at the contact surfaces interact — one material has a stronger attraction for electrons and "grabs" them from the surface atoms of the other. The material that gains electrons becomes negatively charged (more electrons than protons); the material that loses electrons becomes positively charged (fewer electrons than protons). A critical fact: only electrons transfer during friction. Protons remain locked inside atomic nuclei and never move. If an exam question says "positive charges are transferred from one object to another," mark it as wrong immediately — it is always electrons (negative charges) that move; the "positive charge" is merely the net positive charge left behind when electrons depart. Classic examples: rubbing a rubber rod with fur — rubber attracts electrons more strongly, gains electrons and becomes negative; fur loses electrons and becomes positive. Rubbing a glass rod with silk — glass loses electrons and becomes positive; silk gains electrons and becomes negative.

Laws of electrostatic fields and forces: like charges repel; opposite charges attract. A charged object creates an electric field around it — field lines point from positive to negative, showing the direction of force on a positive test charge. Everyday static electricity phenomena are everywhere: a plastic comb rubbed against hair becomes charged and attracts small bits of paper; the crackling sound and visible sparks when removing a synthetic jumper are caused by charge discharging through the air at high voltage; the shock felt when touching a metal door handle after walking on a synthetic carpet is because your body accumulated charge through friction with the carpet, which discharges instantly on contact with conductive metal. In industry, static electricity has widespread applications. In electrostatic spray painting, the spray gun charges paint droplets and the metal object being painted is earthed or oppositely charged — droplets are attracted uniformly to the surface, greatly reducing paint waste. Electrostatic precipitators in factory chimneys charge smoke particles so they are attracted to oppositely charged collecting plates, reducing air pollution. Photocopiers and laser printers also use electrostatic principles: the photoconductive drum loses charge where light hits it; toner only adheres to the dark, charged regions, transferring the image to paper.

Exam Strategy & Top-Scoring Techniques

Edexcel Physics calculation questions award marks in strict sequential steps, meaning even if your final answer is wrong, correct earlier steps still earn most of the marks. The standard template is three lines: Line 1 — write the correct formula in its original form (no need to rearrange). Line 2 — substitute known values and rearrange, keeping units visible. Line 3 — give the final calculated result with appropriate significant figures (usually 2 or 3 s.f.) and the correct unit. Example: a question gives the p.d. across a resistor as 12V and the current through it as 0.4A. Calculate the resistance. Standard answer: Line 1 — V = I x R. Line 2 — 12 = 0.4 x R, so R = 12 / 0.4. Line 3 — R = 30 ohms. If you make a calculation error in Step 2 but the formula is correct, you still earn the formula mark. Note also that in Edexcel mark schemes, a unit error typically costs 1 mark. Never omit units during working — make it a habit to include units in every line.

The 6-mark extended response in the Electricity module appears almost every year, consistently focused on experimental design and data analysis. The three most common types: designing an experiment to investigate how a wire's resistance depends on its length, measuring the I-V characteristic of a filament lamp, and investigating how an LDR's resistance varies with light intensity. Whichever variant appears, your answer should follow this universal framework to ensure no mark is missed. Paragraph 1 — list the required apparatus: power supply or battery pack, the component under test, an ammeter (series), a voltmeter (parallel), a variable resistor (rheostat, to vary voltage and current), a switch, and connecting leads. Paragraph 2 — draw the circuit diagram, clearly showing the ammeter in series on the main loop and the voltmeter in parallel with the component. Paragraph 3 — describe the procedure: connect the circuit, set the variable resistor to maximum before closing the switch, close the switch, adjust the variable resistor and record pairs of voltage and current readings. Paragraph 4 — explain data handling: plot an I-V graph or a graph of R against the independent variable, observe the trend, and draw a conclusion. Paragraph 5 (frequently forgotten but always costs marks) — list safety precautions: no wet hands when operating circuits, do not let wires overheat, use a low-voltage supply.

Before entering the exam hall, check every item on this list: ammeters in series, voltmeters in parallel — this is the single most penalised point in Edexcel Electricity. All I-V characteristic shapes (straight line for fixed resistor, S-curve for filament lamp, one-way conduction for diode) must be second nature. Series and parallel current and voltage rules should be reflexive. Power and energy formulas can be rearranged freely. Fuse rating selection logic is clear: slightly higher than normal operating current. The earth wire is only needed when a live conductor could touch a metal casing. Oscilloscope voltage and period calculations are well practised. The conversion 1 kWh = 3,600,000 J is memorised. All six elements of experimental design (apparatus, circuit diagram, independent variable, dependent variable, control variables, safety) are covered. Going through this checklist takes just three minutes, but it can catch the easily overlooked yet mark-costing details that make the difference between grades.
