Why Science Experiments Matter
KS2 (ages 7-11) is when children's curiosity peaks. Science experiments not only spark their interest in the natural world but also build observation skills, logical thinking, and hands-on ability. The UK National Curriculum expects KS2 students to master "Working Scientifically" skills: asking questions, designing experiments, recording data, and analysing results. Here are 10 fun at-home science experiments covering physics, chemistry, and biology. Each comes with Chinese and English instructions so parents and children can explore together and make science learning come alive.
Drop a few raisins into a glass of clear fizzy drink like Sprite or soda water and watch them "dance" up and down. Carbon dioxide bubbles in the drink stick to the raisins' surface, increasing buoyancy and lifting them to the top. When the bubbles pop at the surface, the raisins sink again, and the cycle repeats. This is a brilliant experiment for introducing buoyancy and gas concepts: simple, safe, and mesmerising for young scientists.
Simulate a volcanic eruption with baking soda and white vinegar. Put 2-3 spoonfuls of baking soda into a small cup or plastic bottle, add a few drops of red food colouring, then slowly pour in white vinegar. Watch the foam gush out instantly! This is an acid-base neutralisation reaction: baking soda (sodium bicarbonate, a base) reacts with vinegar (acetic acid, an acid) to produce carbon dioxide gas, water, and sodium acetate. Children learn the basics of acid-base reactions and gas formation.
Pour whole milk into a shallow dish, add drops of different food colourings on the surface, then dip a cotton swab in dish soap and gently touch the milk surface. The colours burst outward, creating a spectacular "rainbow" pattern. The science: dish soap breaks the milk's surface tension, and its molecules chase the fat molecules in the milk, pulling the food colouring along. This experiment is visually stunning and demonstrates surface tension and molecular motion in a tangible way.
Thread a long string through a straw and tie the string between two points across a room (e.g., chairs or door handles). Blow up a balloon without tying it, pinch the opening, and tape it to the straw. Release the opening and watch the balloon rocket along the string! This is a perfect demonstration of Newton's Third Law: air rushing out of the balloon (action force) creates forward thrust (reaction force). Children can experiment with different balloon sizes to see how speed changes.
Place damp cotton wool or paper towels in a clear cup, position a few beans (mung beans, soybeans) between the cup wall and the cotton, and place it on a sunny windowsill. Water daily to keep it moist and observe the full germination process: roots grow downward first, then the stem pushes upward, and finally leaves appear. Have children draw the plant's changes each day and measure root and stem length. This is an entry-level experiment for learning about plant life cycles and photosynthesis.
Write a message or draw a picture on paper using lemon juice, then let it dry completely: the writing becomes invisible. Gently heat the paper near a warm light bulb or radiator (be careful not to burn it), and the message turns brown and appears. This happens because organic compounds in lemon juice undergo oxidation when heated, turning brown. Children can send "secret messages" to family while learning the basics of chemical oxidation.
Pour about a quarter-bottle of white vinegar into an empty water bottle. Use a funnel to add 2-3 spoonfuls of baking soda into a balloon, then stretch the balloon opening over the bottle mouth without letting the baking soda fall in. Lift the balloon to tip the baking soda into the bottle, and watch the balloon slowly inflate! This uses the same acid-base reaction as the volcano experiment (producing CO2), but children can see how gas takes up space and inflates the balloon. It is a great way to learn about states of matter and gas properties.
Draw a maze on a piece of cardboard, place a paperclip or small metal ball on top, then use a magnet underneath the cardboard to pull the paperclip through the maze. Children discover that magnetic force can pass through cardboard: magnets can move objects without direct contact. Design mazes of different difficulty levels, or challenge children to ask: if we use thicker material, will the magnet still work? This is an engaging way to explore magnetism and non-contact forces.
Split the bottom of a celery stalk (with leaves) and place each split end into cups of differently coloured water (with food colouring). Leave overnight, and the leaves and inside of the stalk will turn the corresponding colours! This happens because celery draws water up through capillary action, with water travelling through tiny tubes called xylem in the stem to reach the leaves. Children can clearly see how plants "drink", making this a vivid experiment for learning about plant transport systems.
10. Egg in a Bottle 瓶中鸡蛋 (Physics 物理)
Hard-boil an egg and peel it. Light a small piece of paper and drop it into a glass bottle whose opening is slightly smaller than the egg (e.g., a milk bottle), then quickly place the egg on the opening. The egg gets "sucked" into the bottle! This happens because the flame consumes oxygen inside the bottle, lowering the internal air pressure, so the external atmospheric pressure pushes the egg in. Note: this experiment involves an open flame and must be done by a parent while children observe. It is a classic demonstration of atmospheric pressure and pressure difference.
All experiments should be done under adult supervision. Take extra care with experiments involving open flames, heat sources, and scissors. When using food colouring, protect clothing by having children wear old clothes or an apron. After each experiment, guide children to wash their hands and tidy up the materials together. Most importantly, encourage children to ask questions and observe carefully: let every experiment be a genuine scientific exploration.

Encouraging Scientific Thinking
Doing the experiment is only the first step. Real science education lies in guiding children to think and question. Before each experiment, have children make a prediction: "What do you think will happen, and why?" Afterwards, compare results to predictions: what was right, what was surprising? This is the core of the Scientific Method: Hypothesis, Experiment, Observation, Conclusion. Do not fear "failed" experiments: unexpected results are often better learning opportunities. UK 11+ exams and KS2 SATs both test this "Working Scientifically" thinking approach, not just factual recall.
