IB IA Evaluation
The IB Internal Assessment (IA) is coursework marked by your school teacher and externally moderated by the IBO. Alongside the External Assessment (final exams), the IA makes up your final subject grade. For most IB subjects, the IA typically accounts for 20%–25% of the total score, making it a critical opportunity to demonstrate independent research skills and critical thinking.
IB IAs span all subject groups: Mathematics has the Math Exploration, Sciences the Individual Investigation, Language A the Individual Oral, and the IB Core components — the Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) — each have their own assessment frameworks. Despite the differences in content, the evaluation criteria across IAs share remarkable similarities.
Common IA Evaluation Criteria
(Personal Engagement)
1. Personal Engagement
This criterion assesses whether you are genuinely interested in the topic and have demonstrated independent thinking and creative exploration. Examiners look for topics with personal significance — not just a box-ticking exercise. In Science IA, this means designing your own experiment or research question; in Math Exploration, choosing a mathematical application that genuinely fascinates you.
(Exploration)
2. Exploration
This evaluates whether you have established a clear research question/aim, selected appropriate methodology, and presented the full research process. The rubric requires you to showcase the entire chain of reasoning — from question formulation through data collection to analysis. You must explain why you chose this method and acknowledge its limitations.
(Analysis)
3. Analysis
Evaluates whether you can deeply analyze data or texts — not just describe results. This is the key criterion separating high-scoring from mid-scoring IAs. You need to demonstrate understanding of the data, identification of patterns, and discussion of anomalies. In Language A Individual Oral, this means analyzing the function of literary devices, not merely identifying them.
(Evaluation)
4. Evaluation
Assesses whether you can critically examine your own work — pointing out strengths and weaknesses, discussing methodological limitations, and suggesting improvements. This is the reflective thinking that IB values most highly. You need to discuss: What would you change if you could do it again? How reliable are your conclusions? What were the uncontrollable variables?
(Communication)
5. Communication
Evaluates whether your report is well-structured, uses accurate terminology, and follows proper citation conventions. IB is extremely strict about Academic Integrity — all sources must be cited, and any form of plagiarism leads to severe consequences. Your report structure should be logically coherent with precise use of subject-specific terminology.
TOK Core Assessment: EE and TOK
The three IB Core components — Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) — have unique assessment approaches. EE and TOK together contribute up to 3 bonus points, critical for the total 45-point score.
The EE's 5 Assessment Criteria:
A. Focus and Method — clarity of research question and appropriateness of methodology
B. Knowledge and Understanding — mastery of subject-specific knowledge
C. Critical Thinking — depth of analysis, discussion, and evaluation
D. Presentation — structure, formatting, and academic conventions
E. Engagement — reflection on the research journey through the Reflections on Planning and Progress Form (RPPF)
The EE is entirely externally assessed, with a maximum of 34 marks. Each criterion has detailed level descriptors — for example, the highest band in Critical Thinking requires "sustained and insightful analysis of the research question, with a convincing and independent argument."
TOK Assessment:
TOK has two assessment tasks: the TOK Exhibition (33%, internally assessed with external moderation) and the TOK Essay (67%, externally assessed). The TOK Essay responds to one of six Prescribed Titles issued by the IB, requiring critical argumentation. Assessment focuses on whether you have established clear knowledge claims, used compelling real-world examples, and demonstrated deep reflection on knowledge questions.
How IA Marks Become Final Grades
(Moderation)
The IB IA marking process is multi-layered:
Step 1 — Teacher Marking: Your teacher marks your IA against the official IB rubric, giving raw marks for each criterion.
Step 2 — External Moderation: The IBO selects a sample of IAs from each school (typically stratified by score), re-marked by external examiners. If the teacher's marking is found to be systematically too lenient or harsh, the entire school's IA marks for that subject are adjusted. This means even if your teacher gave you a high mark, your score could shift if the moderator downgrades your classmates' IAs.
Step 3 — Weighting and Aggregation: The moderated IA mark is combined with the external exam score proportionally to produce the final 1–7 grade.
What High-Scoring IAs Have in Common
1. Focused, Not Broad Topics
The highest-scoring IAs consistently focus on a specific, manageable research question. Rather than "the impact of climate change," narrow it to "the impact of ENSO on rice yields in a specific region of Indonesia." A narrow, deep topic makes it easier to demonstrate analytical depth than a broad, shallow one.
2. Layered Analysis
High-scoring IA analysis sections typically show a "analyze — re-analyze — deeper analysis" structure. For Science IA: descriptive statistics → correlation/regression analysis → discussion of outliers → comparison with existing literature.
3. Powerful, Specific Evaluation
Low-scoring IAs use vague evaluation statements ("there were some experimental errors"), while high-scoring ones specify: "The temperature sensor had an accuracy of ±0.5°C, which could introduce approximately 24% uncertainty when measuring ΔT=2.1°C — the largest source of error in this investigation."
4. Personal Engagement Throughout, Not Just in the Introduction
Truly excellent IAs don't just say "I am interested in this topic" in the opening — they demonstrate personal engagement throughout: explaining in the methodology "why this is the best approach for my research question," and reflecting in the evaluation "this research journey changed my understanding of this field."
Common Pitfalls and Solutions
Pitfall 1: Too Much Description, Not Enough Analysis
Many students write IAs like lab reports or knowledge summaries. Remember the IB golden rule — for every finding you describe, immediately ask "So what?" Don't just say "the temperature rose by 3°C" — say "the 3°C temperature rise supports the initial hypothesis that catalyst concentration positively correlates with reaction rate, because higher catalyst concentration provides more active sites."
Pitfall 2: Too Brief Evaluation Section
A recurring theme in IB examiner feedback: students spend 90% of their word count on data collection and presentation, leaving only 10% for evaluation. In reality, the evaluation should be one of the richest sections of your IA — you need to discuss systematic sources of error, fundamental methodological limitations, dialogue with existing research, and directions for future study.
Pitfall 3: Poor Citation Practices
IB has zero tolerance for academic dishonesty. Ensure every non-original idea is cited, every image and dataset has its source acknowledged. Use a consistent citation style (APA, MLA, etc.) and include a complete reference list. Even AI-assisted content must be honestly declared.
Pitfall 4: Poor Word/Page Management
IAs typically have strict length limits: Math Exploration 12–20 pages, EE 4000 words max, Science IA 6–12 pages. Common mistakes are choosing too broad a topic (leading to excess) or too narrow a topic (leading to insufficient content). Create a detailed outline with estimated word allocations per section before you start writing.
Conclusion: IA is Not a Burden, It's an Opportunity
For IB students, the IA is not a hurdle to "get through" — it's your best opportunity to demonstrate independent academic ability. In final exams, you have just a few hours; but the IA gives you months to craft, revise, and refine. A high-quality IA not only gives you an edge in your final grade but also showcases your research potential and academic caliber in university applications.
Remember: the IA rubric values depth and quality of thinking, not the correctness of your answer. IB examiners want to see not perfect experimental results, but how you grapple with imperfect data — how you question, reflect, and draw learning from your findings. This is the core value of an IB education.
