IB EE Extended Essay
The IB Extended Essay (EE) is a 4,000-word independent research paper that forms a core component of the IB Diploma. Scored from A to E, the EE combines with your Theory of Knowledge (TOK) essay to award up to 3 bonus points. A strong EE not only secures these points but also demonstrates university-level research skills that admissions officers value highly.
1. Choosing the Right Research Question
The single most important decision in your EE journey is the research question. A poorly chosen question leads to frustration, while a well-crafted one makes the writing process almost enjoyable. Your question must be specific, arguable, and rooted in a subject you genuinely enjoy. Avoid questions that are too broad ("What caused World War II?") or too narrow to sustain 4,000 words.
A strong research question follows the "Goldilocks principle": not too broad, not too narrow, but just right. For example, in History, "To what extent did British naval strategy contribute to the outcome of the Falklands War?" is far better than "What happened in the Falklands War?" In Biology, "How does varying light intensity affect the rate of photosynthesis in Elodea canadensis?" is more focused than "How do plants photosynthesize?"
Spend at least two weeks refining your question with your supervisor. A common mistake is rushing to start research before the question is properly framed. Your supervisor's role is to help you narrow your focus, not to give you the answer. Come to meetings with 3-5 draft questions and be prepared to explain why each interests you.
2. Research Methodology That Earns Top Marks
IB examiners look for evidence of genuine scholarly research, not just a summary of Wikipedia articles. Your methodology section should justify why you chose specific sources and how you evaluated their reliability. For science EEs, describe your experimental design, variables controlled, and data collection methods in sufficient detail that another student could replicate your work.
Primary sources carry more weight than secondary ones. In History, this means archival documents, letters, or contemporary newspaper accounts. In English Literature, your primary source is the literary text itself, supported by scholarly criticism as secondary material. In the Sciences, your primary data comes from your own experiments. The assessment rubric rewards students who demonstrate critical engagement with their sources.
Keep a research journal throughout the process. Note down every database you search, every keyword combination you try, and why you rejected certain sources. This journal becomes invaluable when you write your reflection sessions and helps you avoid the panic of forgetting where you found a crucial piece of information.
3. Structuring Your Essay for Maximum Impact
A well-structured EE guides the examiner smoothly through your argument. The standard structure is: title page, contents page, introduction, body (divided into clearly labelled sections), conclusion, and bibliography. Each section should have a clear purpose and contribute directly to answering your research question. Avoid adding sections that are merely "interesting background" but do not advance your argument.
The introduction should include: your research question (stated explicitly), the scope of your investigation, the methodology you used, and a brief roadmap of your argument. Many students make the mistake of writing the introduction first and never revising it. In reality, you should draft the introduction early but finalize it last, after you know exactly what your essay argues.
Each body paragraph should follow the PEEL structure: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link back to the research question. After every major section, ask yourself: "How does this help answer my research question?" If you cannot articulate the connection clearly, that section needs reworking or removal.
4. Understanding the Assessment Criteria
The EE is assessed against five criteria worth a total of 34 marks: Focus and Method (6 marks), Knowledge and Understanding (6 marks), Critical Thinking (12 marks), Presentation (4 marks), and Engagement (6 marks). Notice that Critical Thinking carries the most weight, worth more than a third of the total. Your essay must go beyond description and demonstrate analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of ideas.
The Engagement criterion (Criterion E) evaluates your Reflections on Planning and Progress Form (RPPF). This is where you record three mandatory reflection sessions with your supervisor. Examiners want to see genuine intellectual growth, not generic statements like "I learned a lot." Describe specific challenges you faced, how you overcame them, and how your thinking evolved through the research process.
Print out the rubric and keep it beside you while writing. After completing each section, self-assess against the criteria. Ask your supervisor to evaluate a draft against the official mark scheme. Many students lose marks on Presentation (Criterion D) for easily fixable issues like inconsistent citation formatting, missing page numbers, or an incomplete table of contents.
5. Academic Integrity and Citation Mastery
Plagiarism is the fastest way to fail your EE and potentially your entire diploma. Every idea, fact, or quotation that is not your own must be properly cited. Your school likely uses Turnitin or similar software, and IB examiners are trained to spot improper citation. Use a consistent citation style throughout (MLA, APA, or Chicago) as appropriate for your subject.
Use a reference manager from day one. Tools like Zotero (free), Mendeley, or even a well-organized spreadsheet save hours of panic at the end. Every time you find a useful source, capture its full bibliographic details immediately. The bibliography must include every source you consulted, not just those you directly quoted. A common pitfall is forgetting to note page numbers when taking notes, making it impossible to provide precise citations later.
6. Time Management and the Writing Process
The EE is a marathon, not a sprint. IB recommends spending approximately 40 hours on the EE, but most successful students invest closer to 60-80 hours spread across several months. Create a timeline with specific milestones: topic selection by Month 1, research complete by Month 2, first draft by Month 3, supervisor feedback incorporated by Month 4, and final polish in Month 5. Treat each milestone as a hard deadline.
Write in focused sessions of 60-90 minutes rather than attempting marathon writing days. Your brain's capacity for high-level analytical writing diminishes after about 90 minutes. Between sessions, step away from your desk, exercise, or work on a different subject. Many students find the Pomodoro Technique effective: 25 minutes of intense writing followed by a 5-minute break.
Complete your first draft at least one month before the final deadline. This gives you time to let the essay "rest" for a week, then return with fresh eyes. You will spot logical gaps, weak arguments, and awkward phrasing that were invisible during the intense writing phase. The best essays are rewritten, not just proofread.
7. The Viva Voce and Final Submission
The viva voce is a short concluding interview with your supervisor after you submit the final version. It is your opportunity to reflect on what you learned, discuss challenges you faced, and demonstrate genuine engagement with your research. The viva voce informs Criterion E, so prepare for it seriously. Think about what surprised you, what you would do differently, and how the EE has shaped your understanding of the subject.
Before submission, run these final checks: your word count is under 4,000 (the abstract, contents page, bibliography, and appendices do not count); every in-text citation has a matching bibliography entry; all pages are numbered; section headings are consistent in style; and your research question appears verbatim in both the title page and introduction. Read the entire essay aloud, it is the most effective way to catch errors your eyes skip over.
