IB Chemistry Energetics is one of the most calculation-heavy topics in the core syllabus. From basic enthalpy changes to Born-Haber cycles (HL), mastering energetics means understanding not just the formulas but the underlying thermodynamic principles. This article walks through every calculation type you will encounter in Paper 1 and Paper 2, with worked examples and exam-ready shortcuts.
1. Exothermic vs Endothermic: The Foundation
Every calculation in energetics begins with identifying whether the reaction releases or absorbs energy. Exothermic reactions release heat to the surroundings (ΔH < 0), and the products are more stable than the reactants. Common examples include combustion, neutralisation, and respiration. Endothermic reactions absorb heat from the surroundings (ΔH > 0), with products less stable than reactants. Key examples are photosynthesis, thermal decomposition, and the dissolution of ammonium nitrate.
In the IB exam, you will see energy-level diagrams where the relative positions of reactants and products tell you the sign of ΔH immediately. If products sit lower than reactants on the diagram, ΔH is negative (exothermic). If products sit higher, ΔH is positive (endothermic). Remember that bond-breaking is ALWAYS endothermic and bond-forming is ALWAYS exothermic: this distinction is tested repeatedly in multiple-choice questions.
2. Enthalpy Change Calculations (SL Core)
The fundamental formula for enthalpy change is q = mcΔT, where q is the heat energy transferred (J), m is the mass of the substance being heated (g), c is the specific heat capacity (usually 4.18 J g⁻¹ K⁻¹ for water), and ΔT is the temperature change (K or °C).
Once you have q, the enthalpy change per mole is ΔH = -q/n (where n is the number of moles of the limiting reactant). The negative sign is crucial: it converts heat gained by the water (positive q) into heat released by the reaction (negative ΔH). A common exam trap is forgetting to divide by the number of moles; IB examiners love to give you the mass of a solid reactant and ask for ΔH in kJ mol⁻¹.
2.00 g of NaOH is dissolved in 100 cm³ of water, and the temperature rises from 22.0°C to 34.5°C. Calculate ΔH in kJ mol⁻¹.
q = m × c × ΔT = 100 × 4.18 × (34.5 - 22.0) = 100 × 4.18 × 12.5 = 5225 J = 5.225 kJ
n(NaOH) = 2.00 / 40.0 = 0.0500 mol
ΔH = -5.225 / 0.0500 = -104.5 kJ mol⁻¹ (exothermic, as expected for dissolution of NaOH).
3. Standard Enthalpy Changes
The IB syllabus requires you to define and use several standard enthalpy changes. ΔH°f (standard enthalpy of formation) is the enthalpy change when one mole of a compound is formed from its elements in their standard states. By definition, ΔH°f of any element in its standard state is zero. ΔH°c (standard enthalpy of combustion) is the enthalpy change when one mole of a substance is completely burned in excess oxygen.
Other important definitions include ΔH°neutralisation (enthalpy change when one mole of water is formed from the reaction of an acid and a base under standard conditions) and ΔH°solution (enthalpy change when one mole of a solute dissolves in a solvent to form an infinitely dilute solution). Be precise with the wording of these definitions: IB mark schemes are strict about "one mole" and "standard conditions" (298 K, 100 kPa). 其他重要定义包括中和焓ΔH°neutralisation(在标准条件下,酸和碱反应生成1摩尔水时的焓变)和溶解焓ΔH°solution(1摩尔溶质溶解形成无限稀释溶液时的焓变)。
4. Hess's Law: The Central Problem-Solving Tool
Hess's Law states that the enthalpy change for a reaction is independent of the path taken, depending only on the initial and final states. This is the single most important principle in IB energetics, because it lets you calculate ΔH for reactions that cannot be measured directly. The two main application methods are (a) using enthalpy of formation data and (b) using enthalpy of combustion data.
Using ΔH°f data: ΔH°reaction = Σ ΔH°f (products) - Σ ΔH°f (reactants). Multiply each ΔH°f by the stoichiometric coefficient. Using ΔH°c data: ΔH°reaction = Σ ΔH°c (reactants) - Σ ΔH°c (products). Note the reversal: formation method is products minus reactants, combustion method is reactants minus products. This reversal is one of the most common IB exam errors: students often apply the formation formula to combustion data.
Worked Example (Formation data): Calculate ΔH° for the reaction 3C(s) + 4H₂(g) → C₃H₈(g), given ΔH°f values: C₃H₈(g) = -104 kJ mol⁻¹.
ΔH°reaction = Σ ΔH°f (products) - Σ ΔH°f (reactants) = [-104] - [3(0) + 4(0)] = -104 kJ mol⁻¹. All elements in standard states have ΔH°f = 0.
5. Bond Enthalpies 键能
Bond enthalpy is the energy required to break one mole of a covalent bond in the gaseous state. The IB distinguishes between bond dissociation enthalpy (the exact value for a specific bond in a specific molecule) and mean bond enthalpy (the average value across different molecules). In calculations, you will nearly always use mean bond enthalpy values from the IB data booklet (Section 11).
The bond enthalpy method: ΔH = Σ (bonds broken) - Σ (bonds formed). Bonds broken (reactants) require energy input (endothermic, positive value), and bonds formed (products) release energy (exothermic, negative, but you use the positive bond enthalpy value and apply the formula). A critical step that many students miss is drawing out the full structural formulas to count EVERY bond. Forgetting one C-H bond in a hydrocarbon chain is a guaranteed mark loss.
Worked Example: Calculate ΔH for H₂(g) + Cl₂(g) → 2HCl(g).
Bonds broken: 1 × H-H (436) + 1 × Cl-Cl (242) = 678 kJ
Bonds formed: 2 × H-Cl (431) = 862 kJ
ΔH = 678 - 862 = -184 kJ mol⁻¹ (exothermic, and since the equation forms 2HCl, this is ΔH per 2 moles).
6. Born-Haber Cycles (HL Only) 玻恩-哈伯循环
The Born-Haber cycle is an application of Hess's Law to ionic compounds, linking lattice enthalpy to other measurable enthalpy changes. The cycle traces the formation of an ionic solid from its elements through a series of steps, each with a known or calculable enthalpy change.
The standard Born-Haber pathway for NaCl:
Na(s) → Na(g) [ΔH°atomisation, +108 kJ mol⁻¹]
Na(g) → Na⁺(g) + e⁻ [1st ionisation energy, +496]
½Cl₂(g) → Cl(g) [ΔH°atomisation, +122]
Cl(g) + e⁻ → Cl⁻(g) [1st electron affinity, -349]
Na⁺(g) + Cl⁻(g) → NaCl(s) [lattice enthalpy, ΔH°lattice]
Overall: Na(s) + ½Cl₂(g) → NaCl(s) [ΔH°f = -411 kJ mol⁻¹]
Then: ΔH°f = Σ (all upward steps) + ΔH°lattice
ΔH°lattice = -411 - (108 + 496 + 122 - 349) = -411 - 377 = -788 kJ mol⁻¹
This lets you solve for any single unknown in the cycle if you are given the others. The IB data booklet provides ionisation energies (Section 8) and electron affinities are typically given in the question.
Exam tip: Born-Haber cycle questions in IB Paper 2 are worth 3-4 marks and follow a predictable pattern. Draw the cycle first, label each arrow clearly with the enthalpy change name AND numerical value, then apply Hess's Law to find the unknown. If you mix up the direction of the arrows (especially ionisation vs electron affinity), you will get the sign wrong for the entire calculation.
7. Lattice Enthalpy Trends (HL)
Lattice enthalpy is the enthalpy change when one mole of an ionic compound is formed from its gaseous ions. It is always exothermic (negative) because the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions releases energy. Two factors determine the magnitude of lattice enthalpy: ionic charge and ionic radius.
From Coulomb's Law: lattice enthalpy ∝ (q⁺ × q⁻) / (r⁺ + r⁻). Higher ionic charges produce a larger (more negative) lattice enthalpy. For example, MgO (Mg²⁺, O²⁻) has a lattice enthalpy (~-3800 kJ mol⁻¹) much larger than NaCl (Na⁺, Cl⁻, ~-788 kJ mol⁻¹) because of the 2+ / 2- charges vs 1+ / 1-. Smaller ionic radii also increase lattice enthalpy: LiF has a more exothermic lattice enthalpy than CsI because Li⁺ and F⁻ are much smaller ions. 例如,MgO(Mg²⁺, O²⁻)的晶格焓(~-3800 kJ mol⁻¹)远大于NaCl(Na⁺, Cl⁻, ~-788 kJ mol⁻¹),因为2+/2-的电荷 vs 1+/1-。
Use these trends to explain the relative solubility and thermal stability of ionic compounds: compounds with very exothermic lattice enthalpies tend to be less soluble (the hydration enthalpy cannot overcome the lattice energy).
8. Entropy and Gibbs Free Energy (HL)
Entropy (S) is a measure of the dispersal of energy in a system. The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that the total entropy of the universe always increases in spontaneous processes. In IB calculations, you work with standard entropy changes: ΔS° = Σ S°(products) - Σ S°(reactants). Standard entropy values are found in the IB data booklet (Section 12). Unlike ΔH°f, S° for elements in their standard states is NOT zero.
Gibbs free energy change ties everything together: ΔG° = ΔH° - TΔS°. A reaction is spontaneous when ΔG° < 0. The temperature T must be in Kelvin. This equation explains why some endothermic reactions (ΔH > 0) can still be spontaneous if the entropy increase (ΔS > 0) is large enough at sufficiently high temperatures.
Worked Example: Calculate ΔG° for CaCO₃(s) → CaO(s) + CO₂(g) at 298 K given ΔH° = +178 kJ mol⁻¹ and ΔS° = +160 J K⁻¹ mol⁻¹.
ΔG° = 178 - (298 × 0.160) = 178 - 47.7 = +130.3 kJ mol⁻¹ (non-spontaneous at 298 K).
At what temperature does this reaction become spontaneous? Set ΔG° = 0: T = ΔH° / ΔS° = 178 / 0.160 = 1113 K (approximately 840°C). This explains why limestone (CaCO₃) decomposes in a kiln at high temperatures.
9. Common Calculation Pitfalls
Unit conversions: The biggest source of IB exam errors. q = mcΔT gives joules, but ΔH is usually required in kJ mol⁻¹. Always convert q from J to kJ before dividing by moles. If q = 4180 J, that is 4.18 kJ, not 4180 kJ. Sign errors: Forgetting the negative sign in ΔH = -q/n, or mixing up products-minus-reactants vs reactants-minus-products in Hess's Law. Limiting reagent: When calculating ΔH, always divide by the moles of the LIMITING reactant, not the excess. If NaOH is limiting and HCl is in excess, use n(NaOH), not n(HCl). Missing bonds: In bond enthalpy calculations, draw the FULL structural formula. Count every C-H, C-C, O=O, and O-H bond. Missing one bond typically costs 1-2 marks.
10. IB Exam Strategy for Energetics 能量学IB考试策略
Paper 1 (Multiple Choice, 45-60 min): Energetics questions test definitions, sign conventions, and quick calculations. Know the data booklet sections (8, 11, 12) by heart so you can find values fast. The bond enthalpy Table 11 averages are the ones to use unless a specific bond dissociation enthalpy is given. Multiple-choice questions frequently test the sign of ΔS for gas-producing reactions (ΔS > 0 when moles of gas increase) and dissolution of ionic solids (ΔS > 0).
Paper 2 (Structured Questions, 75-135 min): Expect a full Hess's Law calculation (4-5 marks) and either a bond enthalpy calculation (3-4 marks) or a calorimetry q = mcΔT problem (4-5 marks). HL students will also see a Born-Haber cycle question (4 marks) or a Gibbs free energy question (3-4 marks). Always show working: IB awards method marks even if the final answer is wrong.
