What Is Astrophysics?
Astrophysics is the most visually stunning and conceptually deep module in the OCR A-Level Physics H556 syllabus, taking you out of the laboratory and onto the grand stage of stars, galaxies and the universe itself. The module draws on core principles from mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism and quantum physics, demanding that students flexibly deploy all branches of physics when explaining astronomical phenomena. In OCR exams, Astrophysics accounts for roughly 15-20% of Paper 1 and Paper 3, with an annual guaranteed 6-mark data-analysis question and a 9-mark structured long-answer question in Paper 3's Sections B and C.
Telescopes & Observational Techniques
All astrophysical knowledge begins with collecting light. The OCR specification requires you to master two core telescope types: optical reflecting telescopes and radio telescopes. Reflecting telescopes use a parabolic primary mirror to bring parallel starlight to a focus; key parameters are collecting power proportional to the square of the primary mirror diameter, and angular resolution following the Rayleigh criterion θ≈λ/D. Radio telescopes use large parabolic dishes to collect electromagnetic waves at millimetre-to-metre wavelengths; because radio wavelengths far exceed visible light, a single radio dish has much poorer resolution than an optical telescope, so astronomers use interferometry, combining multiple dishes into an array to boost effective resolution.
Stellar Characteristics & Classification
A star's physical description revolves around two core quantities: luminosity and surface temperature. Luminosity is the total energy radiated per second, measured in watts (W), given by the Stefan-Boltzmann Law L=4πR²σT⁴, where σ is the Stefan constant 5.67×10⁻⁸ W m⁻² K⁻⁴. Apparent magnitude (m) measures brightness as seen from Earth on a logarithmic scale: a difference of 1 magnitude corresponds to a brightness ratio of about 2.51. Absolute magnitude (M) is defined as the apparent magnitude a star would have if placed at 10 parsecs.
The Hertzsprung-Russell diagram is the central classification tool: luminosity (or absolute magnitude) on the vertical axis, surface temperature (or spectral class) on the horizontal. The vast majority of stars sit on the main sequence: hot, high-luminosity O and B stars at the top left, cool, low-luminosity M stars at the bottom right. The Sun is a G2V main-sequence star. Wien's Displacement Law λ_max T = 2.9×10⁻³ m·K links the peak wavelength of a star's spectrum to its surface temperature. In OCR exams, HR diagram reading questions appear almost every year: identifying evolutionary stages, comparing luminosity-temperature relationships, or estimating radius ratios between two stars.
Stellar Evolution: Low-Mass Stars
A star's life is governed by the balance between gravity and nuclear fusion pressure. The evolution path for low-mass stars (M < 1.4 M☉) is an OCR exam favourite: an interstellar gas cloud collapses under gravity to form a protostar; when the core reaches about 10⁷ K, hydrogen fusion ignites via the proton-proton chain, and the star enters the main sequence, burning hydrogen stably for billions of years. When core hydrogen is exhausted, the core contracts and heats up while the envelope expands and cools: the star becomes a red giant, with hydrogen shell burning in the outer layers. Eventually the envelope is ejected as a planetary nebula, and the exposed core becomes a white dwarf, supported by electron degeneracy pressure with no further fusion.
Key physical quantity: the Chandrasekhar limit of 1.4 M☉ is the maximum mass that electron degeneracy pressure can support; a white dwarf exceeding this limit cannot exist stably. OCR exams frequently ask students to describe the Sun's complete evolutionary path from main sequence to white dwarf and explain the core physics at each stage.
Stellar Evolution: High-Mass Stars
When a star's mass exceeds about 8 M☉, its fate is dramatically different. These stars fuse helium, carbon, neon, oxygen and silicon sequentially in their cores, building up an onion-like layered structure. Once an iron core forms, no further energy can be extracted from fusion; the core collapses catastrophically under gravity, the outer layers rebound violently and are ejected as a Type II supernova. The fate of the collapsed core depends on the remnant mass: below about 3 M☉ it becomes a neutron star supported by neutron degeneracy pressure; above this, it continues collapsing into a black hole.
The Schwarzschild radius of a black hole, given by R_s = 2GM/c², defines the boundary of the event horizon. Inside this radius, the escape velocity exceeds the speed of light: no matter or radiation can escape. OCR requires you to calculate Schwarzschild radii and understand that a black hole is not a "cosmic vacuum cleaner": a black hole with the Sun's mass exerts exactly the same gravitational pull on distant planets as the original star, differing only in the extreme spacetime curvature extremely close to the object's surface.
Cosmology
Cosmology extends our view from individual stars to the scale and history of the entire universe. The Doppler effect manifests in astrophysics as redshift and blueshift of spectral lines: when a light source recedes from the observer, the observed wavelength lengthens and frequency decreases, producing a redshift. For low velocities (v≪c), redshift z≈v/c; for relativistic speeds approaching c, the full relativistic Doppler formula must be used.
Hubble's Law v=H₀d is a cornerstone of astrophysics: the recessional velocity of a galaxy is proportional to its distance from us. This discovery directly implies an expanding universe and leads back to the Big Bang model: approximately 13.8 billion years ago, the universe began expanding from a singularity of extreme temperature and density. The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) is the residual thermal radiation from the Big Bang, at a temperature of about 2.7 K, filling the entire sky almost uniformly: it provides the strongest observational evidence for a hot Big Bang origin. Recent observations show that the universe's expansion is accelerating, attributed to dark energy, an unknown form of energy comprising roughly 68% of the universe's total energy content.
Exoplanet Detection
Exoplanets are planets orbiting stars beyond our Solar System. The OCR specification covers two principal detection methods. The radial velocity method detects exoplanets by observing periodic Doppler shifts in a star's spectral lines: the planet's gravity causes the star to wobble slightly, and the radial component of this wobble produces back-and-forth spectral line shifts at the planet's orbital period. This method is most sensitive to short-period, high-mass planets and was among the first techniques to successfully discover exoplanets.
The transit method monitors periodic tiny dips in a star's brightness: when a planet passes in front of its host star, it blocks a fraction of the starlight, producing a regular "dip" in the light curve. The transit depth yields the planet's radius relative to the star; combined with mass data from the radial velocity method, the planet's mean density can be calculated, determining whether it is a rocky planet or a gas giant. OCR data-analysis questions frequently present a real light curve and ask you to calculate transit depth, planet-to-star radius ratio, and orbital period.
OCR Astrophysics exams feature several fixed question types. Data-analysis questions (6 marks) typically present a table or graph (light curve, spectrum, HR diagram) and require you to extract data and substitute into a formula. Key steps: identify what is given and what is required, write the correct formula explicitly, check unit consistency when substituting values, and quote an appropriate number of significant figures (3 s.f. is usually sufficient). Nine-mark structured long-answer questions follow a "state + explain + calculate" marking scheme: 2-3 marks for correct definitions and qualitative description, 2-3 marks for physical mechanism explanation, and 2-3 marks for quantitative calculation. Command words demand special attention: "State" requires only listing facts; "Describe" needs details without explaining causes; "Explain" must include a causal chain; "Calculate" requires full working shown; "Suggest" allows reasoned speculation based on physical principles.
In Paper 3 Section C, a typical 9-mark Astrophysics question may ask you to describe the complete evolution of a 2 M☉ star from the main sequence to its final fate, including physical explanations of each stage and a calculation of its Schwarzschild radius. Such questions test your integrated narrative ability and calculation accuracy; the clarity of your answer structure directly affects your score.
Common Mistakes
Mistake 1: Confusing luminosity with apparent brightness. Luminosity is an intrinsic property (total power output in watts), while apparent brightness depends on both luminosity and distance. A very luminous star can appear dim if it is far away. OCR frequently exploits this confusion by presenting data on two stars and asking which is intrinsically more luminous.
Mistake 2: Thinking a black hole "sucks everything in." A black hole's gravitational field at a given distance is determined by its mass alone, identical to that of any object of the same mass. The event horizon is the unique feature: once crossed, escape is impossible. If the Sun were instantly replaced by a solar-mass black hole, Earth's orbit would be completely unchanged.
Mistake 3: Using the non-relativistic Doppler formula for all redshifts. The approximation z≈v/c is only valid when v≪c. For high-redshift galaxies (z>0.1), relativistic effects become significant and the full relativistic Doppler formula must be applied. OCR expects you to recognise when the approximation breaks down.
Mistake 4: Forgetting that the HR diagram's horizontal axis runs backwards. The HR diagram plots spectral class from O (hot, left) to M (cool, right), which means surface temperature decreases from left to right. Students often read the axis in the wrong direction and misidentify a hot blue star as cool because it sits on the left side of the diagram.
Study Tips
Tip 1: Build a stellar evolution flowchart. Draw a single A4 flowchart covering both low-mass and high-mass evolutionary paths with key threshold masses (1.4 M☉ Chandrasekhar, 8 M☉ supernova boundary, 3 M☉ neutron star/black hole boundary) marked at critical branching points. This one diagram answers the majority of OCR evolution questions.
Tip 2: Practise the distance modulus formula until it is automatic. m-M = 5 log₁₀(d/10) is one of the most frequently tested equations in OCR Astrophysics. Create flashcards with random d and M values and drill the calculation in both directions. Remember that d is in parsecs.
Tip 3: Learn to read light curves quickly. Transit light curves are a staple of Paper 3 data analysis. Practise identifying the transit depth, duration, ingress/egress slopes, and orbital period directly from a graph. Time yourself: aim to extract all parameters from a light curve in under 90 seconds.
Tip 4: Memorise the spectral class sequence with a mnemonic. O B A F G K M : "Oh Be A Fine Girl/Guy, Kiss Me" : and their approximate temperatures: O>30000 K, B=10000-30000 K, A=7500-10000 K, F=6000-7500 K, G=5000-6000 K, K=3500-5000 K, M<3500 K. OCR expects you to know the order and approximate temperature ranges.
建议四: 用助记法记住光谱型序列。O B A F G K M: "Oh Be A Fine Girl/Guy, Kiss Me"::以及它们的近似温度范围: O>30000 K, B=10000-30000 K, A=7500-10000 K, F=6000-7500 K, G=5000-6000 K, K=3500-5000 K, M<3500 K。OCR要求你掌握光谱型的顺序和近似温度范围。
Tip 5: Practise six-mark data-analysis questions under timed conditions. OCR Paper 3 Section B data questions carry 6 marks each and demand efficient time management: allocate 7-8 minutes per question. The most efficient approach is to write the relevant formula first, substitute numbers, calculate, and then write a brief concluding sentence linking the result back to the context of the question.
