Paper 1: Foundations in Psychology
1. The Nervous System
The nervous system is our body's primary communication network, responsible for collecting, processing, and responding to information from the environment. It is divided into two main parts: the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS).
Spinal cord 脊髓: reflex actions, relay between brain and body PNS 外周神经系统
Somatic NS 躯体神经: voluntary muscle movement, sensory input
Autonomic NS 自主神经: involuntary functions (heartbeat, digestion)
The autonomic nervous system further splits into the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches. The sympathetic system activates the body's "fight or flight" response — increasing heart rate, dilating pupils, and inhibiting digestion. The parasympathetic system returns the body to a resting state, often described as "rest and digest."
When describing the nervous system in an exam, always start from the broadest division (CNS/PNS) and work downwards to specific branches. Use the mnemonic C-P-S-A-SP (Central → Peripheral → Somatic → Autonomic → Sympathetic/Parasympathetic) to structure your answer.
2. Neurons and Synaptic Transmission
Neurons are specialised cells that transmit electrical and chemical signals. There are three types you must know for Edexcel: sensory neurons carry information from sense organs to the CNS; relay neurons (interneurons) connect sensory and motor neurons within the CNS; motor neurons carry signals from the CNS to muscles and glands.
Long dendrites, short axon
Cell body in the middle
PNS → CNS direction Relay Neuron
Short dendrites, short axon
Entirely within CNS
No myelin sheath Motor Neuron
Short dendrites, long axon
Cell body at one end
CNS → effector direction
Synaptic transmission is the process by which signals cross the gap between two neurons. When an action potential reaches the presynaptic terminal, vesicles release neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft. These molecules bind to receptors on the postsynaptic neuron, triggering either excitation (more likely to fire) or inhibition (less likely to fire). The net effect — summation — determines whether the postsynaptic neuron reaches its threshold and fires.
Key neurotransmitters to remember: acetylcholine (muscle contraction), dopamine (reward, motivation), serotonin (mood, sleep), and GABA (inhibitory, calming).
3. The Endocrine System
While the nervous system acts in milliseconds using electrical impulses, the endocrine system works more slowly through chemical messengers called hormones, which travel through the bloodstream. The master gland is the pituitary gland, located in the brain — it controls the release of hormones from other glands.
ACTH, growth hormone, oxytocin Adrenal Medulla
Adrenaline, noradrenaline
Fight or flight response Thyroid
Thyroxine
Metabolism regulation Pineal 松果体
Melatonin
Sleep-wake cycle
Fight or Flight Response: When a threat is perceived, the hypothalamus activates the sympathomedullary pathway (SAM). The sympathetic nervous system triggers the adrenal medulla to release adrenaline. This causes: increased heart rate, faster breathing, pupil dilation, inhibited digestion, and increased blood flow to muscles — all preparing the body for immediate action. Once the threat passes, the parasympathetic system restores balance.
4. Localisation of Function in the Brain
The theory of localisation proposes that specific functions are associated with specific areas of the cerebral cortex. Key areas for Edexcel include:
Voluntary movement
Parietal lobe
Touch, temperature, pain
Left frontal lobe
Speech production
Broca's aphasia: slow, laborious speech Wernicke's Area
Left temporal lobe
Language comprehension
Wernicke's aphasia: fluent but meaningless speech
Evidence for localisation: Phineas Gage (1848) survived an iron rod through his frontal lobe, experiencing dramatic personality changes — from calm and polite to impulsive and aggressive. This case suggests the frontal lobe is involved in regulating personality and impulse control. Broca's study of patient "Tan" (who could only say "tan" after left frontal lobe damage) and Wernicke's patients provide clinical evidence for language localisation.
Evaluation: Modern brain scanning (fMRI, PET) supports localisation — Tulving et al. (1994) found episodic memories associated with the right prefrontal cortex while semantic memories activated the left. However, Lashley's equipotentiality theory argues higher cognitive functions are distributed across the cortex rather than strictly localised.
5. Hemispheric Lateralisation and Split-Brain Research
Hemispheric lateralisation refers to the idea that the two hemispheres of the brain are functionally different, with each hemisphere specialising in certain tasks. The left hemisphere is typically dominant for language and analytical processing, while the right is associated with spatial awareness, face recognition, and holistic processing. Note that these hemispheres are connected by the corpus callosum, a bundle of nerve fibres enabling inter-hemispheric communication.
Sperry's Split-Brain Research (1968): Sperry studied 11 patients whose corpus callosum had been severed (commissurotomy) to treat severe epilepsy. In his famous experiment, images were flashed to either the left or right visual field. When an image was shown to the right visual field (processed by the left hemisphere), patients could name it verbally. When shown to the left visual field (processed by the right hemisphere), patients could NOT name it but could select the object with their left hand. This demonstrated that language is lateralised to the left hemisphere.
Evaluation: Strengths include highly controlled laboratory procedures and consistent findings. However, the small sample size (11 participants) and the fact that all had a history of severe epilepsy (which may have caused unique brain reorganisation) limit generalisability. Furthermore, recent research suggests lateralisation is on a continuum rather than absolute — for example, some left-handed individuals have language functions in the right hemisphere or bilaterally distributed.
6. Plasticity and Functional Recovery
Brain plasticity refers to the brain's ability to change and adapt throughout life as a result of experience and learning. This includes synaptic pruning (eliminating unused connections), axonal sprouting (new nerve endings growing to connect with undamaged areas), and denervation supersensitivity (remaining axons becoming more sensitive to compensate for lost ones).
Maguire et al. (2000) studied London taxi drivers and found increased grey matter volume in the posterior hippocampus compared to matched controls — and the volume positively correlated with time spent as a taxi driver. This provides strong evidence for structural plasticity in response to environmental demands.
Functional recovery after trauma: After brain injury, the brain can recover function through several mechanisms: neuronal unmasking (dormant synapses becoming active), stem cell implantation (new cells replacing damaged ones), and rehabilitation (physical and cognitive therapy promoting neuroplasticity). Research by Taub (2002) on constraint-induced movement therapy showed that stroke patients who restrained their good arm and intensively practised with the affected arm showed significant recovery — demonstrating that targeted training can promote functional reorganisation.
7. Ways of Studying the Brain
Measures blood flow (haemodynamic response) to detect active brain areas. Produces 3D images with high spatial resolution (~1-2mm). Non-invasive, no radiation.
Limitation: Poor temporal resolution (~5-second lag); only measures blood flow, not direct neural activity. EEG
Electrodes on the scalp measure electrical activity across the brain surface. Excellent temporal resolution (millisecond-level). Used clinically to diagnose epilepsy and sleep disorders.
Limitation: Poor spatial resolution; only detects activity in superficial cortical layers. ERP
A refined form of EEG — averages brainwave responses to specific stimuli across many trials. Allows researchers to isolate cognitive processes (e.g. P300 component linked to attention).
Limitation: Requires many trials; background noise and extraneous variables must be tightly controlled. Post-Mortem Examinations
Examining the brain after death, often comparing damaged brains to healthy ones. Broca and Wernicke used this method. Allows deep brain structures (e.g., hypothalamus, hippocampus) to be studied.
Limitation: Causation cannot be established; consent issues; damage may be caused by factors other than the variable of interest.
For the Edexcel exam, you must be able to compare these methods on spatial resolution (fMRI wins), temporal resolution (EEG/ERP win), invasiveness (fMRI/EEG/ERP are non-invasive), and whether they measure direct neural activity or indirect correlates.
