Source analysis is the defining skill of Edexcel A-Level History.
Across Papers 1, 2, and 3, your ability to evaluate sources critically accounts for 20-30 marks per paper. Whether you are dissecting a Victorian parliamentary speech, a Soviet propaganda poster, or a civil rights activist's memoir, the same analytical framework applies. This study plan breaks down every component of source analysis : from provenance to cross-referencing : and provides a 6-week roadmap to mastery.
Exam Overview
Three papers, three ways sources appear.
Paper 1 (Breadth Study + Interpretations, 2h15, 30%): Section C presents three extracts from professional historians. You evaluate how convincing their interpretations are against your own contextual knowledge. This is not source analysis in the traditional sense : it is historiographical evaluation.
Paper 2 (Depth Study, 1h30, 20%): Section A gives you two contemporary sources and asks: "How far could the historian make use of Sources 1 and 2 together to investigate..." Worth 20 marks, this question demands paired analysis : you must weigh each source individually and then consider their combined value.
Paper 3 (Aspects of Breadth, 2h15, 30%): Section A presents one source with a similar 20-mark question. The twist: you have less material but more space to explore contextual knowledge.
The NOP Framework: Provenance Analysis
Nature, Origin, Purpose : the three pillars every examiner expects to see.
Nature (性质): What type of source is this? A private diary entry carries different weight than a published newspaper editorial. A government report differs from a personal letter. Identify the genre, format, and intended audience. Ask: is this a public or private document? Was it meant to persuade, inform, record, or commemorate?
Origin (来源): Who produced it? When? Where? A source from a government minister in 1937 carries different authority than the same minister writing memoirs in 1955. The date shapes what the author knew and did not know. The author's position : insider or outsider, participant or observer : determines their access to information. Consider also the institutional context: was this produced for Party archives, a newspaper, or a foreign embassy?
Purpose (目的): Why was this created? To justify a policy, to rally support, to record an event for posterity, to attack an opponent, to defend a reputation? Purpose is not the same as content : a source can be factually wrong yet still reveal why someone wanted to present a particular version of events. The examiner rewards candidates who distinguish between what a source says and why it says it.
NOP in practice
A 1938 Foreign Office memorandum on appeasement (Nature: official government document, confidential; Origin: senior civil servant, March 1938, London; Purpose: to brief the Foreign Secretary ahead of negotiations) can be used to show what the British government believed about German intentions : but NOT as evidence of German intentions themselves. The historian uses it for British perceptions, cross-referencing with German sources to reconstruct the full picture.
Content Analysis: Language, Tone, and Argument
What the source actually says : and how it says it.
Content analysis moves beyond provenance to the substance of the source. Read for explicit claims and implicit assumptions. What facts does the author present? What is omitted? Selection and omission are deliberate acts: a parliamentary speech praising industrial growth that ignores child labour is as revealing by its silence as by its words.
Pay attention to tone and register. Is the language measured and analytical, or emotional and exhortatory? Does the author use passive voice to deflect responsibility? Does the source deploy statistics, anecdotes, or moral appeals? Edexcel examiners reward candidates who identify the rhetorical strategies behind the text.
Argument extraction: Summarise the source's central claim in one sentence before you write. This discipline prevents you from cherry-picking isolated phrases. If the source makes multiple claims, rank them by emphasis : what does the author seem to care most about?
Cross-Referencing and Corroboration
The historian never works with a single source.
For Paper 2 source questions, you must handle two sources together. Start by evaluating each independently (NOP + content), then compare: do they agree, contradict, or offer complementary perspectives? Agreement between sources from different contexts (different authors, dates, purposes) strengthens the case for a particular interpretation. Contradiction does not mean one source is "wrong" : it reveals the contested nature of historical events.
Three cross-referencing moves the examiner looks for.
(1) Convergence: "Source 1 and Source 2 both emphasise X, which is supported by contextual knowledge that..." This shows you can identify patterns across sources.
(2) Divergence: "While Source 1 presents X, Source 2 offers Y. The divergence can be explained by their different provenances : Source 1 is a..." This shows you can explain disagreement through provenance rather than dismissing one side.
(3) Complementarity: "Source 1 provides evidence of elite opinion on X, while Source 2 reveals popular attitudes. Together they offer a more complete picture than either alone."
Utility Assessment: The Edexcel Approach
Utility is broader than reliability.
Many students fall into the trap of asking "Is this source reliable?" and then answering yes or no. Edexcel examiners expect a more nuanced question: "How useful is this source for a specific historical enquiry?" A Nazi propaganda poster is unreliable as an objective account of German society in 1936 : but it is extremely useful as evidence of how the regime wanted to be perceived. A biased source is not a useless source; its bias is precisely what makes it valuable for studying the perspectives of its creator.
Utility checklist for every source question.
What does the source reveal that other types of evidence might not?
What are its limitations : what can it NOT tell us, and why?
Given its limitations, what is it STILL useful for?
What other sources or contextual knowledge would complement it?
Contextual Knowledge Integration
Your own knowledge is what elevates a source answer from competent to outstanding.
Contextual knowledge serves two functions in source analysis. First, it allows you to challenge or support the source's claims. If a British general in 1916 writes that the Somme offensive is "proceeding satisfactorily," your knowledge of the 57,000 casualties on the first day transforms the reading.
Second, contextual knowledge fills the gaps that sources leave. A source might describe an event but not its causes; your knowledge of the broader political, economic, or social context explains why the event happened. Examiners award the highest marks to candidates who move seamlessly between source content and their own knowledge, using each to illuminate the other.
Integration technique: Use phrases like "This is supported/challenged by the fact that..." or "Contextual knowledge reveals that..." to signal when you are deploying your own knowledge. Never separate source analysis and own knowledge into two blocks : weave them together throughout.
Historical Interpretations: Paper 1 Section C
Edexcel's distinctive assessment objective. Edexcel
Paper 1 Section C requires you to evaluate three historians' interpretations. This is not source analysis in the NOP sense : you are engaging with professional historiography. The question asks how convincing each interpretation is "in the light of" your own knowledge.
Approach: For each extract, identify the historian's central argument and the evidence they deploy. Then bring in your contextual knowledge to test the argument. Does the historian overstate one factor while neglecting others? Does their interpretation reflect the decade in which they were writing? (A Cold War historian writing in 1955 sees the world differently from one writing in 1995.)
Weighting: Edexcel expects you to treat all three extracts seriously : do not dismiss one as "wrong." The best answers identify what each interpretation contributes to our understanding while pointing out what each overlooks. The mark scheme rewards balance: you are evaluating interpretations, not adjudicating between them.

Exam Technique: Maximising Your Marks
Timing
20-mark source question: aim for 45 minutes. Spend 10-15 minutes reading and annotating the sources, 25-30 minutes writing. Never skip the planning phase : a disorganised answer is immediately visible.
Structure 结构
Introduction: state your overall assessment (how far the historian can use the sources). Body: Source 1 NOP + content + utility, Source 2 NOP + content + utility, cross-referencing paragraph. Conclusion: balanced judgement, no new evidence.
Command Words 指令词
"How far" requires a balanced judgement : not a yes/no answer. "Evaluate" means weigh strengths against limitations. "Assess" demands criteria-based reasoning. Never write "the source is completely reliable" or "the source is completely useless."
Common Mistakes
Mistake 1: Treating sources as transparent windows. Students paraphrase what the source says without analysing why it says it, who created it, or what it omits. Every source is a constructed artefact with an agenda. Show the examiner you understand this by discussing provenance before content.
Mistake 2: Binary reliability judgements. "This source is reliable because it is an official document." Official documents can be self-serving. "This source is unreliable because the author was biased." All sources have perspectives : bias is a starting point for analysis, not an endpoint. Replace "reliable/unreliable" with "useful for X, limited for Y." 用"对X有用,对Y有限"取代"可靠/不可靠"。
Mistake 3: Separating own knowledge from source analysis. Writing one paragraph on the sources, then a separate paragraph of contextual knowledge misses the point. The skill is integration: use your knowledge to interrogate the source, line by line and claim by claim.
Mistake 4: Ignoring cross-referencing in Paper 2. Evaluating Source 1 and Source 2 independently and stopping is a Level 3 answer (13-16 marks). To break into Level 4 (17-20 marks), you must discuss how the sources work together : what picture emerges when you read them side by side?
Mistake 5: Neglecting historiographical awareness in Paper 1 Section C. 忽略Paper 1 Section C的史学意识。 Students treat the three extracts as competing versions of "the truth" and pick a winner. Instead, recognise that each historian writes from a particular methodological, political, or generational standpoint. The most convincing answer is the one that shows why different historians arrive at different conclusions.
