Acids and bases are among the most heavily tested topics in IGCSE CAIE Chemistry, appearing in both Paper 2 (MCQ) and Paper 4 (Theory) every single exam session. Understanding the key contrasts: strong vs weak, concentrated vs dilute, acid vs base: is essential for scoring well on the structured questions.
1. Strong Acids vs Weak Acids
Strong Acid 强酸
Fully ionises in water. Every molecule releases H+. HCl, H2SO4, HNO3. pH 0-2 for 1 mol/dm3. High conductivity, fast reaction with metals.
Weak Acid
Partially ionises in water. Only a fraction of molecules release H+. CH3COOH, H2CO3, citric acid. pH 3-5 for 1 mol/dm3. Lower conductivity, slower reaction.
The key distinction is ionisation, not concentration. A strong acid fully dissociates (HCl -> H+ + Cl-), while a weak acid reaches equilibrium (CH3COOH ⇌ H+ + CH3COO-). CAIE frequently asks you to explain why ethanoic acid has a higher pH than HCl of the same concentration: the answer is partial ionisation.
2. Concentrated vs Dilute Acids
Concentrated
High number of acid molecules per unit volume of water. Can be strong or weak. 12 mol/dm3 HCl is concentrated strong; 17 mol/dm3 CH3COOH is concentrated weak.
Dilute
Low number of acid molecules per unit volume of water. Can be strong or weak. 0.1 mol/dm3 HCl is dilute strong; 0.1 mol/dm3 CH3COOH is dilute weak.
Concentration describes how much acid is dissolved in water. Strength describes how much it ionises. These are independent properties: a common CAIE trap. A concentrated weak acid (like glacial ethanoic acid) can be more dangerous than a dilute strong acid due to the sheer amount of undissociated acid molecules that can react with skin or other materials.
3. Acids vs Bases
Acids 酸
Proton (H+) donors. pH less than 7. Turn blue litmus red. React with metals to produce H2 gas. React with carbonates to produce CO2.
Bases and Alkalis 碱
Proton (H+) acceptors. pH greater than 7. Turn red litmus blue. Soluble bases are alkalis (NaOH, KOH). Insoluble bases include CuO, Fe2O3.
CAIE defines acids as proton donors and bases as proton acceptors: the Bronsted-Lowry theory. Neutralisation is simply: H+ + OH- -> H2O. Remember that all alkalis are bases, but not all bases are alkalis: copper(II) oxide is a base but insoluble, so it is not an alkali.
4. Reaction Patterns: Metals vs Carbonates
Acid + Metal
Products: Salt + Hydrogen gas
Example: 2HCl + Mg -> MgCl2 + H2
Test: Squeaky pop with lighted splint
Rate: Faster with more reactive metals
Acid + Carbonate
Products: Salt + Water + CO2
Example: 2HCl + CaCO3 -> CaCl2 + H2O + CO2
Test: Limewater turns milky
Observation: Effervescence (fizzing)
Both are classic CAIE structured questions. You must memorise the general equations: acid + metal -> salt + hydrogen, acid + carbonate -> salt + water + carbon dioxide. For naming salts: hydrochloric acid makes chlorides, sulfuric acid makes sulfates, nitric acid makes nitrates. A common exam question asks you to write the ionic equation: for acid + metal, the spectator ions cancel, leaving 2H+ + Mg -> Mg2+ + H2.
5. The pH Scale and [H+] Concentration pH
pH Scale 0-14
Logarithmic: each unit = 10x change in [H+]. pH 1 has 106 (one million) times more H+ than pH 7. Universal indicator shows a colour spectrum from red (pH 1) to purple (pH 14).
Calculating [H+]
pH = -log10[H+]. If [H+] = 0.01 mol/dm3, pH = -log(0.01) = 2. For a pH change from 3 to 5, [H+] decreases by a factor of 100.
The logarithmic nature of pH is a frequent CAIE pitfall. Many students think pH 4 is twice as acidic as pH 2: it is actually 100 times weaker. pH的对数性质是CAIE常见误区。 CAIE Paper 4 may ask you to explain why the pH of weak acids is higher than strong acids at the same concentration, linking back to partial ionisation and the Bronsted-Lowry definition.
6. Titration: Core Practical Skill
Titration is a must-know IGCSE practical. A known concentration of acid (or alkali) is added from a burette to a measured volume of alkali (or acid) in a conical flask with an indicator. The endpoint is reached when the indicator changes colour: phenolphthalein turns from pink to colourless in acid-base titrations.
Titration Steps
1. Rinse burette with acid
2. Fill burette, record initial reading
3. Pipette 25.0 cm3 alkali into flask
4. Add 3 drops of indicator
5. Add acid dropwise near endpoint
6. Record final burette reading
7. Repeat for concordant results
Calculation Method
Moles = concentration x volume (dm3)
Use the mole ratio from the balanced equation.
Example: 25.0 cm3 of NaOH is neutralised by 20.0 cm3 of 0.5 mol/dm3 HCl. Moles HCl = 0.5 x 0.020 = 0.010 mol. NaOH:HCl = 1:1, so [NaOH] = 0.010 / 0.025 = 0.40 mol/dm3.
Concordant results (within 0.2 cm3) are essential for CAIE marks. Always discard the rough titre from your average calculation. The use of a white tile under the flask helps you see the colour change more clearly at the endpoint, a simple detail that examiners expect you to mention.
7. Required Practicals
Preparing a soluble salt
IV: Type of base (metal/carbonate/alkali)
DV: Mass of salt produced
CV: Volume of acid, temperature
Method: React excess base with acid, filter, evaporate filtrate.
Titration
IV: Concentration of acid
DV: Volume of acid used
CV: Volume of alkali, indicator drops
Method: Burette delivery, phenolphthalein indicator.
Testing gas products
H2: Squeaky pop (lighted splint)
CO2: Limewater turns milky
Cl2: Bleaches damp litmus paper
Method: Collect gas, apply test, record observation.
CAIE Paper 6 (Alternative to Practical) frequently tests your knowledge of IV (independent variable), DV (dependent variable), and CV (control variables). You must be able to describe the method in a logical sequence with specific equipment names: burette, pipette, conical flask, not just "add acid to alkali".
8. Acid-Base Indicators
Litmus
Acid: Red
Neutral: Purple
Alkali: Blue
Not suitable for titrations.
Phenolphthalein
Acid: Colourless
Alkali: Pink
pH range: 8.3-10.0
Best for strong base titrations.
Methyl Orange
Acid: Red
Alkali: Yellow
pH range: 3.1-4.4
Best for strong acid titrations.
Universal Indicator 通用
Full spectrum pH 0-14
Red (pH 0) to Purple (pH 14)
Not for titrations.
Great for estimating pH.
The choice of indicator for titrations depends on the strength of the acid and base. Phenolphthalein works well for strong acid-strong base and weak acid-strong base titrations because its colour change occurs in the basic range. Methyl orange is better for strong acid-weak base titrations. For a strong acid-strong base titration, the pH jump at the endpoint is so large that either indicator works.
9. Acids in Everyday Life 生活中的酸
Common Acids
Citric acid in lemons/oranges, ethanoic acid in vinegar, carbonic acid in fizzy drinks, lactic acid in sour milk, ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) in fruits. Hydrochloric acid in stomach digests food.
Common Bases
Sodium hydrogencarbonate (baking soda) for baking and antacids, calcium hydroxide (lime) for soil treatment, magnesium hydroxide in indigestion tablets, ammonia in cleaning products.
CAIE loves contextual questions linking chemistry to real life. Understanding that antacids neutralise excess stomach acid (HCl) is a classic 2-mark question. Similarly, the treatment of acidic soil with lime (CaO or Ca(OH)2) to raise pH is another recurring context: this is neutralisation in action right in the fields around us. Bee stings are acidic and can be treated with baking soda (a mild alkali), while wasp stings are alkaline and need vinegar (a weak acid): more real-world neutralisation that CAIE loves to test.
10. Common Mistakes
Top 5 IGCSE Acid Mistakes
1Confusing strong with concentrated. "Strong acid" means fully ionised, not highly concentrated.
2Writing H2 instead of H2O for carbonate reactions. Acid + carbonate gives water, not hydrogen.
3Not balancing ionic equations. Both atoms AND charge must balance.
4Thinking pH 6 is slightly acidic. pH is logarithmic: pH 5 to 6 is a 10x decrease in [H+], not a "small change".
5Forgetting state symbols. CAIE deducts marks. Always write (aq), (s), (l), (g).
11. Exam Technique and Revision Checklist
Paper 2 (MCQ) Tips
Read every option. CAIE often puts a partially correct option first. Watch for "strong vs concentrated" traps. pH scale questions: remember it is logarithmic.
Paper 4 (Theory) Tips
Command words: "Describe" means say what happens; "Explain" means give reasons. For acid reactions, always write the balanced equation first: it guides your answer.
Revision Checklist
