Characteristics of Life is the very first topic in the IGCSE CAIE Biology syllabus (0610/0970). It lays the foundation for everything that follows : from cells to ecosystems. In Paper 2 and Paper 4, questions on the seven life processes appear frequently, often woven into data-analysis or comparison-style questions. This guide unpacks every characteristic with clear examples, links them to organism classification, and provides a revision checklist to lock in your understanding.

The Seven Characteristics of Life (MRS GREN)

All living organisms share seven fundamental life processes, easily remembered by the acronym MRS GREN. These characteristics distinguish living things from non-living matter. Examiners often ask students to identify which characteristic is demonstrated in a given scenario : so knowing the definitions and examples for each is essential.

More Than Just Walking

In IGCSE Biology, movement refers to any action causing a change of position or place by an organism or part of an organism. This includes both locomotion (moving the whole body from place to place) and internal movement (such as peristalsis in the gut or cytoplasmic streaming in plant cells). Plants do not walk, but they do display tropisms : growth responses toward or away from stimuli such as light (phototropism) or gravity (geotropism).

Animal Movement

Walking, running, swimming, flying via muscles and skeleton. Internal: heart beating, diaphragm during breathing.

Plant Movement

Phototropism (shoots grow toward light), geotropism (roots grow downward), nastic movements (Mimosa pudica closing).

3 Respiration 呼吸: The Energy-Releasing Reaction

Respiration is a chemical reaction occurring in every living cell that breaks down glucose to release energy in the form of ATP. In IGCSE exams, students must distinguish respiration from breathing (ventilation). Breathing is the physical movement of air in and out of lungs; respiration is the biochemical process inside cells. The energy released is used for muscle contraction, active transport, cell division, and maintaining body temperature.

Aerobic

Glucose + Oxygen = Carbon Dioxide + Water (+ lots of ATP). Occurs in mitochondria. Most efficient pathway.

Anaerobic

Glucose = Lactic Acid (+ little ATP) in animals. Glucose = Ethanol + CO2 (+ little ATP) in yeast. Occurs in cytoplasm.

Oxygen debt occurs when lactic acid builds up during vigorous exercise. The body repays this debt by continuing to breathe deeply after exercise stops, supplying extra oxygen to break down lactic acid into CO2 and water in the liver.

Detecting the World

Sensitivity is the ability to detect and respond to stimuli : changes in the internal or external environment. All organisms sense their surroundings and react appropriately to survive. A stimulus can be light, temperature, sound, pressure, gravity, pH, or chemical concentration. The response is coordinated by the nervous system in animals and by hormones in both plants and animals.

Gravity 重力

Geotropism in roots and shoots

Touch 触

5 Growth 生长: Permanent Increase

Growth is defined as a permanent increase in size and dry mass by an increase in cell number (cell division by mitosis) or cell size (cell enlargement). In IGCSE, a key distinction is that growth is permanent : temporary changes like a plant wilting and recovering are NOT growth. Growth in animals is determinate (they stop growing after a certain size), while growth in plants is often indeterminate (they continue growing throughout their life at meristems).

In CAIE practical questions, students may be asked to design experiments measuring growth. Use dry mass (dried at 80°C until constant mass) rather than wet mass, because water content fluctuates. Other measures: length, height, number of leaves, or cell count.

Passing On Life

Reproduction ensures the continuity of a species by producing new individuals. IGCSE Biology distinguishes between sexual reproduction (fusion of male and female gametes, producing genetically varied offspring) and asexual reproduction (a single parent produces genetically identical offspring : clones). Reproduction is NOT essential for an individual organism's survival, but it IS essential for the species.

Sexual

Gamete fusion = zygote. Produces genetic variation. Examples: flowering plants (pollination), mammals, fish.

Asexual

Binary fission, budding, runners, tubers. No gametes, no variation. Examples: bacteria, potatoes, strawberry runners.

7 Excretion 排泄: Clearing Metabolic Waste

Excretion is the removal of toxic waste products of metabolism from the body. This is one of the most common confusion points in IGCSE : students often mix up excretion (removal of metabolic waste: CO2, urea, excess water/salts) with egestion (removal of undigested food as faeces through the anus). Faeces have never entered cells or participated in metabolism, so their removal is egestion, NOT excretion.

Excreted by lungs (exhalation)

Urea 尿素

Excreted by kidneys (urine)

Water 水

Excreted by kidneys and skin (sweat)

Salts 盐

Excreted by kidneys and skin

Bile Pigments

Excreted by liver via bile

Excess ions

Excreted by kidneys

8 Nutrition 营养: Fueling Life

Nutrition is the intake of materials for energy, growth, and repair. Organisms can be classified by their mode of nutrition. IGCSE requires understanding the difference between autotrophs (produce their own food, e.g., plants via photosynthesis) and heterotrophs (consume other organisms, e.g., animals, fungi). Some organisms like Euglena show both modes : this is called mixotrophic nutrition.

Autotrophs

Photoautotrophs: use light energy (plants, cyanobacteria). Chemoautotrophs: use chemical energy (some bacteria near deep-sea vents).

Heterotrophs

Holozoic: eat solid food (humans). Saprophytic: external digestion on dead matter (fungi). Parasitic: live on a host (tapeworm).

9 Classification 分类: MRS GREN in Context

The characteristics of life are the criteria used to classify organisms into kingdoms. In the IGCSE CAIE syllabus, students study the five-kingdom system: Animals, Plants, Fungi, Prokaryotes (Bacteria), and Protoctists. Each kingdom demonstrates MRS GREN characteristics in distinct ways : understanding these differences is essential for classification questions in Paper 2 and Paper 4.

Kingdom Animalia 动物界

Multicellular. Heterotrophic holozoic. Movement via muscles. Sexual reproduction dominant. Cell wall absent.

Kingdom Plantae 植物界

Multicellular. Autotrophic (photosynthesis). Cellulose cell walls. Movement via tropisms. Asexual and sexual reproduction.

Kingdom Fungi

Mostly multicellular. Saprophytic nutrition. Chitin cell walls. Body made of hyphae forming mycelium. Spore reproduction.

Kingdom Prokaryotes

Unicellular. No nucleus (DNA loose in cytoplasm). Cell wall present (not cellulose). Binary fission. Autotrophic or heterotrophic.

Kingdom Protoctista

Mostly unicellular eukaryotes. Diverse nutrition: animal-like (Amoeba), plant-like (Chlorella), or both. Found in water or moist environments.

Exam Tips & Common Mistakes

Multiple-choice questions often present a scenario and ask "Which characteristic of life is demonstrated?" Read carefully : one organism may show multiple characteristics simultaneously. Choose the one the question is asking about.

Structured questions on Characteristics of Life frequently ask you to "Describe and explain" or "Suggest why." Use the command-word strategy: State means give a fact; Describe means say what you see or what happens; Explain means give the scientific reason. For a 4-mark question, provide 2-3 distinct marking points with clear biological reasoning.

Top 5 Common Mistakes

1. Confusing Excretion with Egestion 混淆排泄和排遗: Excretion removes metabolic waste (CO2, urea). Egestion removes undigested food (faeces). Faeces have never entered your cells.

2. Saying Plants Do Not Move Plants move via tropisms (phototropism, geotropism). They also show internal movement (cytoplasmic streaming). Always mention these in answers.

3. Confusing Breathing and Respiration Breathing (ventilation) is the physical movement of air. Respiration is the chemical breakdown of glucose inside cells. Use the terms precisely.

4. Forgetting That Growth = Dry Mass Increase A plant taking up water increases in wet mass but NOT in dry mass. Always use dry mass for measuring true growth.

5. Mixing Up Sensitivity and Movement Sensitivity is detection + response. Movement is just the response part. A Venus flytrap closing is movement, but the detection of the touch is sensitivity.
