Waves are everywhere in GCSE Edexcel Physics. From the ripples on a pond to the light entering your eyes, waves transfer energy without transferring matter. The Waves topic appears in Paper 1 (Foundation and Higher) and typically accounts for 15-20% of the marks, making it one of the most heavily weighted single topics in the specification. In the Edexcel exam, you will be tested on your ability to describe wave behaviour, apply the wave equation, and interpret diagrams of reflection and refraction.
At its core, a wave is a disturbance that travels through a medium (or through a vacuum, in the case of electromagnetic waves), carrying energy from one place to another. The key distinction every Edexcel candidate must master is between transverse waves, where oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer, and longitudinal waves, where oscillations are parallel. Ripples on water, all electromagnetic radiation, and seismic S-waves are transverse; sound waves in air and seismic P-waves are longitudinal. Exam questions frequently ask you to compare these two types using diagrams, and many students lose marks by mixing up the direction of oscillation with the direction of energy transfer.
Transverse waves are defined by oscillations that run at right angles to the wave direction. Picture a rope being shaken up and down: the wave travels horizontally along the rope, but each point on the rope moves vertically. Transverse waves have crests (peaks) and troughs (valleys), which you can label on diagrams for easy marks in the exam. All electromagnetic waves : radio, microwave, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-ray, and gamma : are transverse. This means they can all exhibit reflection, refraction, and diffraction. Required Practical 8 (Edexcel) involves using a ripple tank to observe water waves, measuring their wavelength and frequency, and observing how they behave when they encounter barriers and gaps.
Longitudinal waves have oscillations parallel to the direction of energy transfer. Instead of crests and troughs, they have compressions (regions of high pressure where particles are close together) and rarefactions (regions of low pressure where particles are spread out). The classic example is sound. When a speaker cone vibrates, it pushes air molecules forward, creating a compression, and then pulls back, creating a rarefaction. This pattern of alternating high and low pressure travels through the air as a longitudinal wave. Edexcel examiners love to ask: "Describe how a loudspeaker produces a sound wave." The answer requires you to mention the vibrating cone, the alternating compressions and rarefactions, and the fact that the wave is longitudinal.
Every wave can be described by four key quantities: amplitude (the maximum displacement from the rest position, measured in metres), wavelength ( λ, the distance between two consecutive crests or compressions, in metres), frequency ( f, the number of complete waves passing a point per second, in hertz, Hz), and period ( T, the time for one complete wave, in seconds, where T = 1/f). The most important equation in the entire Waves topic is the wave equation: v = fλ, where v is wave speed in metres per second (m/s). Edexcel will expect you to rearrange this equation, substitute values with correct units, and give your answer to an appropriate number of significant figures. A classic exam problem: "A water wave has a frequency of 5 Hz and a wavelength of 0.4 m. Calculate its speed." Solution: v = fλ = 5 × 0.4 = 2.0 m/s.
When using the wave equation, the most common pitfall is unit confusion. Frequency must be in hertz (not kilohertz), wavelength in metres (not centimetres), and speed in m/s. If the question gives wavelength in centimetres, convert to metres before substituting. Another trap: the wave equation v = fλ applies to all waves : sound, light, water, and seismic : but the speed v is different for each. Sound travels at approximately 330 m/s in air; light and all electromagnetic waves travel at 3.0 × 108 m/s in a vacuum. Edexcel often asks: "Explain why light from a lightning strike is seen before the thunder is heard." The answer: light travels much faster than sound, so the light reaches you almost instantly while the sound takes longer to cover the same distance.
Reflection is the bouncing back of a wave when it hits a boundary between two different media. The law of reflection states that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection, measured from the normal (an imaginary line perpendicular to the surface). This rule works for light, sound (echoes), and water waves. In Edexcel diagrams, you must be able to draw the incident ray, the reflected ray, and the normal, labelling all three angles accurately. Refraction is the bending of a wave as it crosses a boundary between two media of different densities. When a wave enters a denser medium (e.g., light traveling from air into glass), it slows down and bends towards the normal. When it enters a less dense medium, it speeds up and bends away from the normal. The frequency of the wave never changes during refraction : only the wavelength and speed change. This is a guaranteed examination point.
Diffraction is the spreading of waves as they pass through a gap or around an obstacle. The amount of diffraction depends on the size of the gap relative to the wavelength: the most significant diffraction occurs when the gap width is approximately equal to the wavelength. If the gap is much larger than the wavelength, the waves pass through with minimal spreading. This explains why you can hear sound around a corner (sound wavelengths are typically 0.1 m to 2 m, comparable to door widths) but you cannot see around a corner (light wavelengths are ~400-700 nm, far smaller than everyday gaps). Required Practical 8 in Edexcel includes observing diffraction of water waves in a ripple tank by varying the gap width and noting the effect on the wave pattern.
Sound waves are longitudinal mechanical waves requiring a medium to travel : they cannot travel in a vacuum. This is a classic Edexcel exam concept, often tested with the bell jar experiment: an electric bell inside a sealed jar is rung, and as the air is pumped out, the sound becomes fainter until it is inaudible, demonstrating that sound needs a medium. The speed of sound varies with the medium: it travels fastest in solids (~5000 m/s in steel), slower in liquids (~1500 m/s in water), and slowest in gases (~330 m/s in air) because particles are closer together in solids and can transmit vibrations more quickly. Sound waves with frequencies above 20,000 Hz are called ultrasound, and Edexcel expects you to know practical applications such as medical imaging and sonar.
The electromagnetic spectrum is a continuous range of transverse waves that all travel at the speed of light in a vacuum (3.0 × 108 m/s) but have different wavelengths and frequencies. In order of decreasing wavelength (increasing frequency and increasing energy), the EM spectrum is: radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays. Edexcel frequently asks you to recall this order and associate each type of EM radiation with its application : radio waves for communication, microwaves for cooking and satellite transmission, infrared for heaters and thermal imaging, visible light for sight and photography, ultraviolet for tanning and sterilisation, X-rays for medical imaging, and gamma rays for cancer treatment and sterilising medical equipment. A common six-mark question: "Compare the properties and uses of two different types of electromagnetic waves."
Edexcel Waves Exam Technique
Six-mark questions in Edexcel Physics are marked using a levels-based system. To access top marks (Level 3, 5-6 marks), you need to write in linked, logical sentences that use correct scientific terminology. For a waves six-marker, structure your answer: (1) define key terms like wavelength, frequency, and amplitude using precise definitions, (2) state the wave equation v = fλ and explain the relationship between variables, (3) give a worked example with substituted numbers, and (4) link back to the real-world context in the question. Never bullet-point your answer : write in continuous prose.
Data analysis questions are another Edexcel staple. You may be given a graph of displacement against time or displacement against distance and asked to determine amplitude, period, frequency, and wavelength. Always read the axes labels carefully before answering : mixing up a displacement-time graph with a displacement-distance graph is a costly error. For calculation questions, show your working clearly: write the equation, substitute the numbers, calculate the result, and include the correct unit. Edexcel awards marks for substitution even if your final answer is wrong.
Common Mistakes
Mistake 1: Confusing transverse and longitudinal oscillations. Many students draw a transverse wave when asked to represent a sound wave. Remember: sound is longitudinal : draw compressions and rarefactions, not crests and troughs. The direction of oscillation is parallel to energy transfer, not perpendicular.
Mistake 2: Incorrect units in the wave equation. Substituting wavelength in centimetres instead of metres gives a wave speed that is off by a factor of 100. Always convert to metres first: 50 cm = 0.50 m. Check your unit at the end : if you get a wave speed of 200,000 m/s for a water wave, something is wrong.
Mistake 3: Thinking frequency changes during refraction. When a wave crosses a boundary, its speed and wavelength change, but the frequency remains constant. The frequency is determined by the source, not the medium. Edexcel examiners love to test this misconception.
Study Tips
Tip 1: Draw and label diagrams repeatedly. Draw transverse waves with crests, troughs, wavelength, and amplitude labelled. Draw longitudinal waves with compressions and rarefactions. Draw reflection diagrams with incident ray, reflected ray, normal, and both angles. Diagram-drawing is a skill that improves with practice and earns easy marks.
Tip 2: Master the wave equation through deliberate practice. Create a table of 10 problems with different combinations of known and unknown variables. Practice rearranging v = fλ into f = v/λ and λ = v/f. Include unit conversions in every problem. Aim for 100% accuracy on calculation questions : these are the most predictable marks in the Waves topic. 练习将v = fλ重新排列为f = v/λ和λ = v/f。
Tip 3: Use real-world examples to anchor your understanding. When studying refraction, think about why a straw looks bent in a glass of water. When studying diffraction, note that you can hear a conversation from the next room through an open door. When studying the EM spectrum, recall that your phone uses microwaves for WiFi and radio waves for Bluetooth. These concrete examples make abstract concepts memorable.
Tip 4: Create keyword flashcards for the EM spectrum. Make a flashcard for each type of EM radiation with three bullet points: its position in the spectrum (relative to visible light), one key property (e.g., ionising or non-ionising), and one practical use. Review these flashcards for 5 minutes every day in the week before your exam.
Tip 5: Practice Required Practical write-ups. Edexcel Required Practical 8 (waves in a ripple tank) can appear as a standalone question worth up to 6 marks. You need to know the method, the measurements (wavelength via strobe light, frequency from motor), the variables (independent: frequency; dependent: wavelength; control: water depth), and safety precautions (avoid water near electrical equipment). Write a full method from memory, then check it against your notes.
