Both papers are 1 hour 45 minutes and include multiple-choice, short-answer, and 6-mark extended response questions.
2. Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table
The atom consists of a dense nucleus containing protons (charge +1, mass 1) and neutrons (charge 0, mass 1), surrounded by electrons (charge -1, mass 1/1836) in discrete energy levels (shells). Atomic number = number of protons; mass number = protons + neutrons. Isotopes have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons, meaning identical chemical properties but different physical properties (e.g., mass, density).
The periodic table arranges elements by increasing atomic number. Groups (vertical columns) share the same number of outer-shell electrons and similar chemical properties. Periods (horizontal rows) have the same number of electron shells. Group 1 (alkali metals) are soft, reactive, form +1 ions; Group 7 (halogens) are diatomic, form -1 ions, reactivity decreases down the group; Group 0 (noble gases) are inert with full outer shells.
3. Chemical Bonding 化学键
Three types of strong chemical bonds define how atoms combine. Ionic bonding occurs between metals (lose electrons, form cations) and non-metals (gain electrons, form anions), held together by electrostatic attraction in a giant ionic lattice with high melting/boiling points. Covalent bonding forms when atoms share pairs of electrons : simple molecular substances (e.g., H2O, CO2, NH3) have low melting points and do not conduct electricity, while giant covalent structures (diamond, graphite, silicon dioxide) have very high melting points. Metallic bonding is the attraction between positive metal ions and a sea of delocalised electrons, explaining malleability and electrical conductivity.

4. Quantitative Chemistry
Mole calculations are at the heart of GCSE Chemistry. Avogadro's constant (6.02 x 1023) defines one mole as the amount of substance containing exactly 6.02 x 1023 particles. Key formulas: moles = mass / Mr for solids, moles = concentration x volume (dm3) for solutions, and moles = volume / 24 (dm3 at RTP) for gases. Balancing equations and calculating reacting masses require converting between grams and moles : always start by writing the balanced equation, find the mole ratio, then convert mass to moles, apply the ratio, and convert back to mass.
Worked Example: What mass of CO2 is produced when 12g of carbon burns completely in oxygen? C + O2 = CO2. Mr of C = 12, so moles of C = 12/12 = 1 mol. 1:1 ratio means 1 mol CO2. Mr CO2 = 44, mass = 1 x 44 = 44g CO2. Always show your working for method marks even if the final answer is wrong.
5. Rates of Reaction
Reaction rate is measured by the change in reactant or product quantity over time. Four factors affect rate: temperature (higher temperature = more particles exceed activation energy, more frequent successful collisions), concentration/pressure (more particles per unit volume = increased collision frequency), surface area (greater exposed area = more particle contact), and catalysts (provide an alternative pathway with lower activation energy, chemically unchanged at the end). Collision theory states that for a reaction to occur, particles must collide with sufficient energy (≥ activation energy Ea) and correct orientation.

6. Electrolysis 电解
Electrolysis splits ionic compounds into their constituent elements using direct current electricity. Key components: the electrolyte (molten or dissolved ionic compound with free-moving ions), anode (positive electrode where oxidation/electron loss occurs), and cathode (negative electrode where reduction/electron gain occurs). In molten electrolysis, the metal cation reduces at the cathode while the non-metal anion oxidises at the anode. In aqueous solutions, H+ and OH- ions from water compete : the reactivity series determines which cation discharges (less reactive metals like Cu discharge; more reactive metals like Na let hydrogen gas form instead).
Triple-only content includes electrolysis of brine (NaCl solution: H2 at cathode, Cl2 at anode, NaOH left in solution) and copper purification (impure Cu anode = pure Cu cathode, impurities fall as anode sludge). Half-equations at each electrode are frequently examined: write them balanced for both atoms AND charge.
7. Organic Chemistry
Organic chemistry is the study of carbon-based compounds. Crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons separated by fractional distillation : smaller molecules with lower boiling points condense higher up the column. Alkanes (CnH2n+2) are saturated hydrocarbons used as fuels, undergoing complete combustion (CO2 + H2O) or incomplete combustion (CO + H2O). Alkenes (CnH2n) contain a C=C double bond, making them unsaturated and more reactive : they decolourise bromine water (orange = colourless), a key test to distinguish from alkanes.
Cracking breaks long-chain alkanes into shorter, more useful alkanes and alkenes. Catalytic cracking uses Al2O3/SiO2 at ~550°C; steam cracking uses steam at 800-900°C. Addition polymerisation joins alkene monomers (opening the double bond) to form polymers like poly(ethene) : draw repeating units with the C=C opened and extended bonds through brackets.
