1. Crude Oil and Fractional Distillation
Crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons : compounds made only of carbon and hydrogen atoms. It formed over millions of years from the remains of ancient plankton buried under layers of sediment, subjected to high temperature and pressure. The key property that allows us to separate crude oil into useful fractions is the difference in boiling points of hydrocarbons with different chain lengths. Longer chains have stronger intermolecular forces, so they have higher boiling points. Fractional distillation takes place in a tall column with a temperature gradient : hot at the bottom (around 350°C) and cool at the top (around 25°C). Vapours rise, condense at different heights, and are collected as fractions: refinery gases at the top, then petrol, kerosene, diesel, fuel oil, and bitumen at the bottom. Bitumen has the highest boiling point, is the most viscous, and is the least flammable. Refinery gases have the lowest boiling point, are the least viscous, and are the most flammable.
2. Alkanes
Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons with the general formula CnH2n+2. The term "saturated" means every carbon atom forms four single covalent bonds : there are no C=C double bonds. The first four straight-chain alkanes are methane (CH4), ethane (C2H6), propane (C3H8), and butane (C4H10). Alkanes are generally unreactive because the strong C-C and C-H single bonds require a lot of energy to break. However, they undergo complete combustion in excess oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water, releasing a large amount of energy : this is why they are used as fuels. If oxygen is limited, incomplete combustion occurs, producing carbon monoxide (toxic) or carbon (soot) instead of CO2. Alkanes also react with halogens (chlorine, bromine) in the presence of UV light via a substitution reaction, where a hydrogen atom is replaced by a halogen atom.
3. Alkenes
Alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons with the general formula CnH2n. They contain at least one C=C double bond, which is the functional group that defines their chemical reactivity. The C=C double bond consists of one sigma bond and one pi bond; the pi bond is weaker and can break open to let other atoms attach : this is why alkenes undergo addition reactions. The simplest alkene is ethene (C2H4), followed by propene (C3H6). Alkenes are much more reactive than alkanes. The classic test for alkenes is the bromine water test: orange bromine water turns colourless when shaken with an alkene, as bromine adds across the double bond to form a dibromoalkane. Key addition reactions: with hydrogen (hydrogenation, nickel catalyst at 150°C) to form alkanes; with steam (hydration, phosphoric acid catalyst, 300°C, 60 atm) to form alcohols; and with halogens to form dihaloalkanes. Alkenes are produced from longer-chain alkanes by cracking, which breaks large hydrocarbon molecules into smaller, more useful ones. Catalytic cracking uses a hot aluminium oxide or silica catalyst, while steam cracking uses steam at very high temperatures.
4. Addition Polymerisation
Addition polymerisation is the process by which many small alkene monomers join together to form a very long polymer chain. The monomer must have a C=C double bond (unsaturated). Under high pressure and with a catalyst, the double bond opens up, and thousands of monomers link together to form a single polymer molecule. The polymer is saturated because all carbon-carbon bonds in the backbone are single bonds. The repeating unit of the polymer has the same atom ratio as the monomer, which makes it easy to draw: simply break the C=C double bond in the monomer and extend the single bonds on each side. Common addition polymers include poly(ethene) used for plastic bags and bottles, poly(propene) used for ropes and carpets, poly(chloroethene) or PVC used for window frames and pipes, and poly(tetrafluoroethene) or PTFE used for non-stick pans. An important exam skill is drawing the repeating unit from a given monomer, and vice versa: given the polymer structure, identify the monomer by working backwards. Remember to use brackets with the "n" subscript and to show the extended bonds on either side of the repeating unit.
5. Alcohols 醇 (Triple Science Only)
Alcohols are a homologous series with the functional group -OH (hydroxyl group) and general formula CnH2n+1OH. The first four alcohols are methanol (CH3OH), ethanol (C2H5OH), propanol (C3H7OH), and butanol (C4H9OH). Ethanol is the most commonly tested alcohol. It can be produced by fermentation: yeast converts glucose (C6H12O6) into ethanol and carbon dioxide at 30-37°C under anaerobic conditions. This is a renewable process, but the ethanol produced is not very concentrated (about 12-15%) and must be distilled. Alternatively, ethanol is made industrially by hydration of ethene: ethene + steam are reacted with a phosphoric acid catalyst at 300°C and 60 atm. This produces pure ethanol quickly but uses non-renewable crude oil as the feedstock. Alcohols undergo combustion to produce CO2 and H2O. They can be oxidised: primary alcohols are first oxidised to carboxylic acids using potassium dichromate(VI) acidified with sulfuric acid (the orange solution turns green). Alcohols also react with sodium to produce hydrogen gas and a sodium alkoxide.
6. Carboxylic Acids and Esters (Triple Science Only)
Carboxylic acids contain the -COOH functional group (carboxyl group). Their general formula is CnH2n+1COOH. The first four are methanoic acid (HCOOH), ethanoic acid (CH3COOH), propanoic acid, and butanoic acid. Ethanoic acid is the active component of vinegar. Carboxylic acids are weak acids: they only partially ionise in water, releasing a small proportion of H+ ions. This is why ethanoic acid has a higher pH than hydrochloric acid of the same concentration. They react with metals (producing hydrogen gas and a salt), metal carbonates (producing CO2, water, and a salt), and alkalis (neutralisation to form a salt and water). The salt formed from ethanoic acid is called an ethanoate. Esters are formed by reacting a carboxylic acid with an alcohol in the presence of a strong acid catalyst (concentrated sulfuric acid). This is called esterification and is a condensation reaction (produces water as a by-product). Esters have the functional group -COO- and are known for their fruity smells; they are used in flavourings, perfumes, and solvents. The naming convention: the alcohol part gives the first name (methyl, ethyl), and the carboxylic acid part gives the second name with an "-oate" ending (ethanoate, propanoate).
7. Condensation and Natural Polymers (Triple Science Only)
Condensation polymerisation differs from addition polymerisation in two crucial ways: it involves two different monomers (each with two functional groups), and it produces a small molecule (usually water or HCl) as a by-product for each link formed. The monomers are not alkenes; instead, they contain functional groups like -OH, -COOH, -NH2, or -COCl. Common condensation polymers include polyesters (formed from a diol and a dicarboxylic acid, used in clothing and bottles), and polyamides (formed from a diamine and a dicarboxylic acid, used in nylon ropes and fabrics). DNA is a natural condensation polymer: each nucleotide has a phosphate group, a sugar (deoxyribose), and a nitrogenous base (A, T, C, or G). Nucleotides join via condensation reactions between the phosphate of one and the sugar of another, forming the sugar-phosphate backbone. Two DNA strands are held together by hydrogen bonds between complementary base pairs (A=T and C≡G), forming the famous double helix. Proteins are also natural condensation polymers made from amino acid monomers, each containing -NH2 and -COOH groups. Starch and cellulose are natural polymers made from glucose monomers, but these form via condensation reactions as well.
