**Chemical bonding is one of the most heavily examined topics in GCSE AQA Chemistry, appearing in Paper 1 and feeding directly into Structure & Properties questions.** 化学键合是AQA化学GCSE考试中考查最密集的专题之一,不仅出现在Paper 1,还直接关联物质结构与性质的考题。Understanding the three types of bonding : ionic, covalent, and metallic : is the foundation for explaining everything from melting points to electrical conductivity. ### 1. Ionic Bonding 离子键 Ionic bonding occurs when a metal atom transfers one or more electrons to a non-metal atom. The metal loses electrons to form a positive ion (cation), while the non-metal gains electrons to form a negative ion (anion). The oppositely charged ions are held together by strong electrostatic forces of attraction in a giant ionic lattice. **Key examples to memorise:** - **NaCl**: Na loses 1 electron → Na⁺; Cl gains 1 electron → Cl⁻. Each Na⁺ is surrounded by 6 Cl⁻ and vice versa in a cubic lattice. - **MgO**: Mg loses 2 electrons → Mg²⁺; O gains 2 electrons → O²⁻. Note that MgO has a much higher melting point than NaCl because the 2+ / 2- charges produce stronger electrostatic attraction. **Properties of ionic compounds:** - **High melting and boiling points** : the giant lattice structure requires lots of energy to overcome the strong electrostatic forces - **Conduct electricity when molten or dissolved**, but NOT as solids : ions are free to move and carry charge only when the lattice breaks down - **Brittle** : when a force is applied, like charges align and repel, causing the crystal to shatter **离子化合物的三大性质:** 高熔点高沸点(巨型晶格需要大量能量克服静电引力);熔融或溶解时导电但固态不导电(只有晶格解体后离子才能自由移动);脆性(受力时同种电荷对齐排斥,晶体碎裂)。 ### 2. Covalent Bonding 共价键 Covalent bonding happens between non-metal atoms that share pairs of electrons to achieve a full outer shell. Unlike ionic bonding, no electrons are transferred : instead, the shared pair is attracted to the nuclei of both atoms. **Simple molecular substances (e.g., H₂O, CO₂, O₂, Cl₂):** - **Low melting and boiling points** : the covalent bonds within molecules are strong, but the intermolecular forces between molecules are weak and easily overcome - **Do NOT conduct electricity** : there are no free ions or delocalised electrons - **Often gases or liquids at room temperature** **简单分子物质(H₂O, CO₂, O₂, Cl₂等):** 分子内的共价键很强,但分子间的分子间力很弱;低熔点低沸点;不导电(没有自由离子或离域电子)。 **Giant covalent structures (e.g., diamond, graphite, silicon dioxide):** - **Very high melting points** : all atoms are joined by strong covalent bonds in a continuous network - **Diamond**: each carbon atom forms 4 covalent bonds in a tetrahedral arrangement; extremely hard; does not conduct electricity - **Graphite**: each carbon forms 3 covalent bonds in layers; one delocalised electron per carbon allows it to conduct electricity; layers slide over each other making it soft and slippery - **Silicon dioxide (SiO₂)**: each silicon bonded to 4 oxygens, each oxygen bonded to 2 silicons; similar structure to diamond **巨型共价结构:** 金刚石中每个碳原子形成4个共价键(四面体),极硬且不导电;石墨中每层碳原子形成3个共价键,每个碳贡献1个离域电子所以能导电,层间可以滑动所以柔软润滑;二氧化硅结构与金刚石相似,每个硅连4个氧,每个氧连2个硅。 **AQA exam favourite:** You must be able to explain why graphite conducts electricity but diamond does not. The answer always involves "delocalised electrons" : graphite has one per carbon atom that can move and carry charge through the layers. ### 3. Metallic Bonding 金属键 Metallic bonding is the electrostatic attraction between a lattice of positive metal ions and a sea of delocalised electrons. The outer electrons of metal atoms become delocalised and are free to move throughout the entire structure. **Properties explained by the sea of delocalised electrons:** - **Good conductors of heat and electricity** : delocalised electrons can move and carry thermal energy and charge - **Malleable and ductile** : layers of positive ions can slide over each other while the delocalised electrons continue to hold them together; the metallic bonding is non-directional - **High melting and boiling points** : strong electrostatic attraction between positive ions and the electron sea requires significant energy to overcome **离域电子海解释金属三大性质:** 优良的导热导电性(电子自由移动传递能量和电荷);延展性(离子层可以滑动而离域电子继续将它们结合在一起);高熔点高沸点(正离子与电子海之间的强引力需要大量能量克服)。 **Alloys are harder than pure metals** because the different-sized atoms disrupt the regular layer arrangement, making it harder for layers to slide. This is a common 4-6 mark question.

⚠️ Top 5 Bonding Mistakes
1. 混淆键合类型与结构: "Covalent bonds are weak" is wrong : covalent BONDS are strong, but intermolecular FORCES between simple molecules are weak. This distinction appears in almost every exam.
Saying "ionic compounds conduct electricity" without specifying "when molten or dissolved" loses marks. Solid ionic compounds do NOT conduct.
3. 合金解释不完整: "Alloys are harder because of different sized atoms" : always add "which disrupts the regular layers, preventing them from sliding."
It's not just layers : each carbon donates ONE delocalised electron. "Graphite has delocalised electrons that can move and carry charge" is the correct phrasing.
When writing ionic equations for bonding, always include state symbols (s), (l), (g), (aq). Students lose easy marks by omitting them.
### 7. Key Equations to Remember - **Ionic compound formula from charges:** Swap the ion charges to get the ratio. Mg²⁺ + Cl⁻ → MgCl₂ - **Dot-and-cross diagrams:** Show ONLY outer shell electrons. Use different symbols (dots and crosses) for electrons from different atoms. AQA awards marks for correct number of electrons and clear distinction between atoms. - **Ball-and-stick models:** Represent atoms as balls and bonds as sticks, but remember this model does NOT show the actual size of atoms or the strength of forces. ### 8. Revise Smarter, Not Harder - **Draw and redraw dot-and-cross diagrams** for NaCl, MgO, H₂O, CO₂, CH₄. Muscle memory helps you reproduce them under exam pressure. - **Make a one-page bonding summary table** with columns: Bonding Type | Particles | Forces | Melting Point | Conductivity | Examples. AQA examiners love structured answers that mirror this format. - **Practice 6-mark "compare and explain" questions** for pairs like diamond vs graphite, NaCl vs H₂O, pure iron vs steel. These appear every year. - **Use the AQA specification checklist** to tick off each bonding subtopic as you master it.

### 9. Nanoparticles and Smart Materials (AQA Triple Only) If you are taking Triple Science (separate sciences), AQA expects you to know about nanoparticles and their applications, which link directly to bonding and surface area. Nanoparticles are particles between 1 and 100 nanometres in size (1 nm = 1 × 10⁻⁹ m). They have a very high surface area to volume ratio, which makes them useful as catalysts, in sunscreens, and in drug delivery systems. However, their small size raises concerns about potential toxicity : they can enter cells and the environment in ways larger particles cannot. **Coarse particles (PM10)** : diameter 1 × 10⁻⁵ to 2.5 × 10⁻⁶ m; **Fine particles (PM2.5)** : diameter 1 × 10⁻⁷ to 2.5 × 10⁻⁶ m; **Nanoparticles** : diameter 1 × 10⁻⁹ to 1 × 10⁻⁷ m. You must know these size ranges for Triple. ### 10. Last-Minute Exam Day Tips - **Read the bonding question twice** : look for keywords that tell you which model to use: "metal and non-metal" → ionic; "non-metals only" → covalent; "metals only" → metallic; "conducts as solid" → metallic; "conducts when molten only" → ionic; "never conducts" → simple molecular covalent. - **If asked to draw, use a pencil and ruler.** Dot-and-cross diagrams must be clear. Messy overlapping dots and crosses lose marks. - **Always link property to bonding.** Never just state a property : always add "because..." For full marks in explain questions, name the particles, name the forces, and describe what happens when energy is added.
